Today, we’ll show you how we built our RV composting toilet. Though it’s a simple design, it definitely wasn’t easy to build. Like all other building projects, there was a ton of planning involved!
Why did we choose a composting toilet over a regular RV toilet?
There are many factors involved with our decision, but it mainly had to do with being completely self-sufficient and not having to deal with the dreaded “stinky slinky” (black water tank hose). Not only do composting toilets smell less and use zero water, they are also much easier to maintain.
Why did we build it ourselves?
As many of you will find, composting toilet manufacturers charge a crap ton (pun intended)! We decided to build our own for about $70 because purchasing one from a manufacturer can costs you well over $1,000. For that cost, we’ll happily use our own bucket, thank you very much :D
Special shout out to Papa Justus and also our good friend Nate over at Hickman High School. You guys are rock stars and we couldn’t have done it without you!

Yes! A detailed video would be great. Separating, smell, composting material and how and where you dump? Thank you! Such a great idea. I also don't want to be spending $1000+

It's definitely not the most glamorous thing in the world but it is perfect for when we are out in the middle of nowhere and there is no access to public restrooms. It's very practical. We will make a video in the future.

I enjoying your videos. You are doing a great job. But, that privy that you built reminds me of the outhouse we had when I was a kid. As they say, "What goes around, comes around."

Then you could strip out an A frame camper put a pop out on each side place LED grow lights and set it up with grow beds and even a hydroponic system and use your rich top soil and rich plant food to grow stuff. 😊

Idea for a composting toilet. Design a composting toilet that drains the urine into a tank and the sticky stuff that drops down onto a heated drying plate that moves the sticky stuff around has ita sterilized and dried out and turned into rich top soil to grow plants. Take a joe cell then dissolve aluminum cans into gallium IE liquid metalto form aluminum gallium alloy. Then fill joe cell half way with gallium alloy. Then fill joe cell the remaining way up with urine. Then turn on the h joe cell with the correct electrical frequency to cause the urine to produce HHO that is tgen used to charge solid state sponge hydrogen fuel cells. A few cycles let joe cell liquid metal harden then collect byproduct and crystallize it into rich plant food. Ypu could also place tesla coils around joe cell to absorb the energy feild and charge up organic carbon power cell banks. Be a really neat system for recreational vehicles yes? 😊

Soooooo I had this epiphany last night about going greener and doing compost. Chris (my husband) then looked on KZfaq and found that our favorite KZfaqrs were doing compost too... It is a sign right? 😂 I have done A LOT of research through the night and everyone has different ideas on the composting agent... I have heard pine is no good. He and I are going to do cedar and Pete moss. I have heard the Pete moss breaks the solids down fairly quickly. We are definitely doing this like this weekend. We will be boondocking a lot and I am worried about dumping the black water tank and also having enough fresh water.... So we will be replacing the black water tank and placing another fresh water tank. Sinks and shower... I believe are all gray water.

Do you only have the bucket beneath? No seperator? Does that work? I think the composting toilet is an interesting concept which I would try if I had an RV but I figured the separator is the crucial difference to avoid sewage smell.

+TinfoilHatGirl Hi! We will be going into more detail on the toilet, but basically we use two different buckets. Separating it creates virtually no smell... Surprisingly enough O.o

Just a quick note to request a follow-up video to this one about your experiences using and disposing of the toilet goodies, when you have time and get around to it 🐶 as I am planning on doing the same in my school bus/skoolie conversion, thanks! p.s. Did you get your info./building design from the Humanure book?

We will hopefully be covering this in a later video. It is a very practical build... basically an outhouse that's in the RV. It's for the times we are out in the middle of nowhere with no public restrooms and works great. We just made up the design ourselves. If we had unlimited money, we would definitely go with a premanufactured toilet like natures head or air head. But, we have to pinch our pennies right now :-)

Did you two add a urine diverting funnel and connect that to your black water tank? How do you disassemble it to empty the bucket? Thanks!
@indigodragon7129

Solid state sponge hydrogen fuel cells can be used to operate electrical power generators and even to operate a heating system and even to cook with. All that urine produced each day could be put to better use could it not by turning it into HHO to fill fuel cells and to generate electricity and plant food? Some crazy amazing ideas. 😊
@Jkirk3279

And how do you imagine you can turn urine into “HHO”. That’s actually H2O, by the way.

Hi guys, what kind of composting material are you using in your composting toilet? I know the commercial one has a fan to suck out the smell. How are you tackling the problem. Also where do you do #1?
@DuetJustusFam

Hey John! We are actually using the sawdust from the wood we used for our floors (ironically enough). We don't have a fan on ours so we should probably make a video about what our experience has been. Great question. We will get to working on that video!

I have jumped around watching your videos. KZfaq rearranges things unless you go the 27 vid playlist but I find that so boring. What determined your thought process in completing the other renovations after the most obvious things to remove-anything that would imped your process?

We had to do certain things based on the weather and ability to get help. If the RV was in covered storage with power, we would have been in a much better situation to do everything in a "proper order." Thanks for all of your comments/questions!

I know I got here late but this has been bugging me for a while now. what did you guys do with the black tank? I"m guessing you plugged if off and use it for an over flow for the grey tank. Sorry, I'm probably being nosy, but it's the plumber in me.

Yes we plugged it and actually leave it empty (we could use it as a grey overflow but haven't... yet).
