Using the blower and two bucket cyclone from previous videos to build a dust collector. Still lots of work left to finish it up. woodgears.ca/dust_collector/ma...

So now to finish it up, you need to also add a lightbulb mount so that the cool flow of dust around the cyclone is visible while it is running :-)

Great video. I like all your shorter videos you've been posting but they have lacked (or seemed to) the creative ingenuity I fell hook line & sinker for. This is gold. Can't wait to see the finished product and the results when you get to that.

Sir your attention to detail is to be admired, when at 3:56 you even matched the grain of that strip with the grain of the side so that the expansion and contracting rate would be similar and the strip will not become part . Congratulations,

I've got a squirrel cage blower from an old mobile home furnace and several motors that I've salvaged. What I've learned from this build, (of yours) is that I can put together a whole shop dust control system. THANKS! One small criticism. You don't use enough power tools and most of the power tools you do use, you made yourself. The American Power Tool Council, the APTC will pay you to use it's members manufactured power tools.The business of America is doing business. If you don't do your part you won't make money doing business. Thanks again!

Nice design. Air doesn't like to turn sharp corners. If you were to radius all the airway holes it would improve efficiency and possibly be slightly quieter.

Very awesome build! This has quickly become one of my favorite youtube channels! Matthias, a minor suggestion. To reduce the footprint of your dust collector it seems like you could have built your filter box only a few inches taller and then received the ABS from the side instead of the top so that you could stack the cyclone on top of the filter. Is there a reason you didn't want to do it this way? Anyway, I love your videos!

Try making a baffle chamber to remove really large particulates before the air enters the cyclone.
@dlwatib9 жыл бұрын
BrokenLifeCycle The cyclone is already excellent at removing large particulates. That's what it's there for. The filters only have to take care of the really small stuff.
@RandomInsano210 жыл бұрын
I wonder how much pressure is lost to the shape of the manifold (a very hard bend there). It's hard to test now, but did you run any tests on using a single filter directly over the hole? I would also guess that it's hard for air to make it over to the back end of the filter and the second filter on the bottom, so maybe tests of putting a hole on the side between the filters could be interesting.
@ReevansElectro10 жыл бұрын
There are a lot of sharp corners for the air to flow around in your design which all combine to create drag and sap power away from the machine. It also may make it quieter to stop turbulence by using better aerodynamic design. Router for the inside edges maybe?

How much vacuum did you lose after adding the filter, the cyclone, and hose as opposed to just the cyclone and just the blower? Thanks for the video.
@1873Winchester9 жыл бұрын
I've been studying dust collector designs a lot recently, and it seems all those 90 degree bends and such really robs your cyclone of a lot of power. I'm probably buying your plans soon just for the blower design, but I am thinking I'll build it all straight up, no bends, it'll be a tall DC but I got more vertical space than horiztontal anyway.
@matthiaswandel9 жыл бұрын
1873Winchester I measured it. the pipig air resistance is pretty insignificant to the hose, but air resistance is totally dominated by the cyclone.

@timwadman238610 жыл бұрын
I'm curious. In the design of Rigid shopvacs, the filters will actually have a rigid cage that fits inside the filter cartridge. From what I can tell that cage will help the prevent the filter from collapsing from the air pressure especially as the filters gradually become more clogged. Did you take this into account when you made this design and/or does this seem to present an issue with your design?
@matthiaswandel10 жыл бұрын
A shopvac has much more suction. Not much of a risk of that here.

do you think a 1/2 hp would be strong enough for this type of project. I can get 1/2 a lot easier then anything bigger for free or little money.
@MRrwmac10 жыл бұрын
You mentioned the purpose was to reduce noise (less than the shop vac) and I was wondering if you accomplished that?
@BrokenLifeCycle10 жыл бұрын
Shop vac motors typically are brushed, making an irritably loud sound. Induction motors are brushless, so that cuts back on noise a lot. The sound that you are likely hearing is the turbulence of the accelerated moving air in the blower, the circulating air within the motor, and the bearings.
@MRrwmac10 жыл бұрын

Actually most of the air resistance comes from the cyclone. The bends are pretty insignificant in comparison.

Because a dust collector moves so much air that it is almost impossible to filter it through water without decreasing the perfomance.
