some practical tips in building a house for seniors:: - 1. Build your masters bedroom ground level near or if possible have a door near your garage 2. Build oversize doors for your house, restrooms, 3. If possible minimize stairs in any part of your house 4. Look for the drainage output 5. Elevate your house foundation from the main road

Best of luck to you on your construction. I have built three homes here over 30 years and I can guarantee you that firstly you do your homework, secondly, supervise, supervise, supervise everyday. The minute you take your eyes off the construction you will get screwed. How? by short cuts on installations, drinking on the job, workers not turning up and incorrect or substituted materials or short/light loads. The minute they see you as not diligent, you will be in for a nasty shock. My first and second construction were nightmares. After we broke ground on our first construction, I firmly instructed the foreman to CAP a copper water pipe so it doesnt leak. Told him to go to Citi Hardware and buy a 50 peso pipe cap. So we go off shopping for groceries, 4 hours later we come back to a swimming pool where the slab was going to be laid the next day. The pipe that was supposed to be caped was just bent over with a hammer. He left the job soon after we left so the site flooded and we neede to get a pump to pump the water out.....we fired that builder.

@@MrBatteryChanger1 I agree 💯 I've built two houses and bought and remodeled two houses here in the Philippines I learned to be on the job site before the contractor and his workers everyday and stayed with them every step of the way. It's saved me money doing it this way not having to have them redo their work.

Doesn’t matter where you build. If you don’t watch what happens, you end up with more troubles than you asked for! Did build in Germany myself a house all alone. In Canada I bought a lot and a to constructed house from a “Gold Award” builder. Lots of trouble. Building a house now by myself again in Panama. Every time I hired helpers, half of them don’t understand the 8-17 rule. They start at 9 and like to get paid at 12. Never mind that they show up with no tools. So I rather just do it myself and as fast or slow as I can. Take care.

Tricky contractors not special to the Philippines. We have done gut renovations here in Chicago and we lived across the street from the two adjacent buildings we took down to the studs. If we hadn't been at the buildings nearly every day there were so many mistakes/lazy decisions that we would have missed. And right now we have a friend doing a renovation in Madeira and he just flew there to find that hardly any work had been done and some of the work was done poorly or incorrectly. Sometimes it is worth the extra money to hire an independent construction supervisor to visit the site occasionally and let the workers know that an expert is keeping an eye on the project.

Congratulations Paul and Mae. Glad to see the start of your build. Love is trust and this just shows that you trust goes deeper more than we know. You chose the right woman.I have a friend who married an American 30 years her senior. They live in the states she loves her hubby dearly. She works as a teacher there and when we see each other when she visits me here in Canada she always call her husband and I can hear the love and respect they have for each other. Coming from a Filipina(myself)married to a Canadian, Mae will be at your side I see a loving wife behind an honorable classy guy like you. You both will be in good hands. We choose love, respect, humility and honor over hate, negativity and jealousy . We may not have any control with what people think and talk about us but we can control how we think and feel. Push on ignore and think about the goal. What they cannot do you can Paul. ❤❤❤❤

Have you thought about putting a well in for the water preferably deep enough that you don't get the contaminated water? I would recommend a high-end water filtration system as well. Also a tall water tower that sits in the sunshine, Will give you Sun powered warm water, with enough water for the both of you to have a long shower without running out of water.

Hi Paul, I just wanted to say that I think you might be really underestimating the videos that you can make regarding your house build and how interested people will be in watching them. I have watched many foreigners building houses in Southeast Asia and the interest from their subscribers is phenomenal. I think your subscribers would love it and it certainly wouldn't hurt for you to get reimbursed a little bit on the cost of the house. I have spent my entire life in the United States running a construction business that I built residential housing and I know that I would love to see as much detail about what you are doing as you're willing to film. I myself am retired and living in Thailand and six months ago I bought a condo on the ocean then preceded to gut it and build it out western style

Yes been there with the sink hole issue. The previous owner of my last house left the roots and stump cut off at ground level with a few inches of dirt. After 15 years, there were sunk root tracks in the lawn and a hole where the main stump was located. It was a lot of digging to prevent people from potentially breaking their leg in the back yard. This builder seems like a thoughtful contractor. Maybe I would leave one burried in the corner of the property, if I thought that there might be a need an outhouse in the future. It would save some digging.

We started our house two years ago today. Finish that December. Paid a fixer to get building permit. City gave us a temporary permit. Two years later and we never got the official permit but all is good. Two tips for you; make sure the put double sided insulation under the roof metal. Second; your wall outlets, they tend to use simple two slot plugs. But many appliances have that 3rd ground plug. So ask them to put ground outlets everywhere or you’ll be buying those stupid adapters. Most of ours were ground but not all. I had to pay an electrician to change the rest. Good luck.

Good for you and Mae, hope you are both able to create great memories in your future home! BTW I know, I probably, don't have to tell you this, but ignore the haters, that are being negative and see this as a risk for you. They are too selfish and small minded to understand, that doing things for others is a rewarding experience, and more so when you do it out of love and gratitude, and not expecting something in return.

Hi Paul, Just a heads up. I know you mentioned that there would be some grading and compacting of the soil before the slab is poured. I had a friend down south in Luzon, I believe he was in Sorsagon, had the contractor grade and compact. He still had a bit of settling that occurred, presented as cracks forming in the walls and ceiling. I‘ve been watching and learning from your channel, really happy for you and the wife. I actually lived up in Angeles from 81-85, and used to head down to Dumaguete to dive out at Balicasag Island. When I get out there I‘ll look you up, Cheers

Hello Paul, long time fan. Just a few tips from an expat who bought a house here in the Philippines. Make sure that the water pipes for your plumbing are the best quality. My pipes burst on our first day. My in laws had leaks after a year. The same goes for electrical wiring.
