I'm American. I pedaled a bicycle alone from Manila to Tacloban, Leyte (about 700 miles I think) way back in 1984 when the NPA was still active in Samar. It was quite an adventure. I also lived in Maasin City, Southern Leyte briefly. You house building project brought back memories of Leyte. Even if untrained, you have the keen eye of a professional designer. Your are absolutely correct that there is no such thing as enough electrical outlets, and it saves all those messy extension cords running around. Kudos to you and your substantial accomplishments. I should have met you 40 years ago. By the way, the love of your family has no bounds. Very impressive as well. Everyone says, "I love you." You do it in actions, not words.

How many times have I said that, when you marry a Filipino girl, you marry the family. We also built a beautiful house and no regrets because a Filipino woman gives you more in return in love and dedication than what a house could ever cost. We travelled to the Philippine every year for seventeen years except for the last two due to the pandemic but we are continuing our visits in November. My wife’s family are good, honest people and they don’t expect us to financially support them but we did make it possible for the kids to go to college to improve their future earnings and we also send balatbayan boxes full of goodies twice a year, so they have two Christmases annually..lol......can’t wait to go back..cheers🍷🇨🇦

This harkens me back to the construction of my wife's and my house in our barrio. If you're getting yours built for $25k, you're still getting a deal. Our total investment in our house (not counting the lot, that was already ours) wound up being in the neighborhood of $40k. The differences were that square footage is about 25% more than yours by comparison, plus we contracted out for much of the structural work, especially the roof. My wife's family members did the bulk of the labor, though, with everything else. My nephew is a licensed electrician and boy, we took full advantage of THAT! My wife and I got perhaps two good years of use out of our dream house before she unfortunately passed away. It's funny but of all the regrets I have of her passing, it's that she never got to enjoy our home in retirement. I don't wanna say she was robbed, because she's in a FAR better place now; but we put a lot of blood, sweat, tears, and money into building that place and she never really got to enjoy it to its fullest. I hope to enjoy it FOR my sweet Mindy, if we can ever get past this COVID insanity and fly back and forth like regular people.

Its quite something to be able to give your parents a new home. Well done. Warm air rises. You can use this law of physics to naturally cool a building. Essentially, you need to allow the warm air to leave the top of the building through a vent (or window). If there is a vent at ground level, cooler air will be drawn in to replace the expelled air. The movement of this air from ground level to the upper parts of the building create a cooling effect. It may be too late now, but the air movement can be further helped by slightly tilting the ceilings toward the staircase leading to the upper levels. I would be careful about power outlets in the bathrooms. You can get special power outlets to take electric razors etc, but standard outlets are not advisable. In UK the bathroom light is switched on and off by a draw string switch or by placing a standard switch on the wall outside the bathroom, never inside. Water and electricity are a dangerous combination.

It looks great Pea! You should feel a sense of pride for what you are doing for your family. In the US if the “water closet” has a shower then it is still considered a bathroom. If it’s just a toilet and sink then it is called a “powder room” or a half bath.

When people do renovations to add more outlets usually. My current house is built in the 1940s but it’s been renovated by the previous owner to have a lot more outlets. Pea, until you mentioned it in the costs portion, after the walk-through I was wondering why the dirty kitchen and washrooms were omitted from the plans. I must agree in an extreme way. You are 100% right. Filipino homes never have nearly enough power outlets. When I built my place I drove the electrician crazy with all the outlets I demanded be installed. Your viewers need to note that your outlets are for the common two-spade Filipino style plug which is similar to the pre-1954 US style as neither spade is wide to define polarity. This means you will need a number of 'universal adapters as many of the electrical devices you purchase in the stores in the Philippines have plugs that are EU style, US style, Australian style and UK style. We installed "universal' outlets. Even those do not handle all types but at least they accept most of what you will run into here. The second floor terrace as well as the entryway terrace will get rained on frequently. This is the Philippines. You know it but your viewers might not. The roof over each is great to provide shade and a minimum of protection from rain, but no, it isn't going to keep you dry often enough. Your use of the 16mm rebar was very smart for your posts. You are right that the cost savings in labor is a major issue that keeps the cost low. However, I would never use a contractor. I was the general contractor for our home and the boarding house we built later. We hired day labor, skilled and helpers. When building here, be on the site EVERY DAY. NO EXCEPTIONS. Be aware that you will be buying much of the tools the laborers will use and it seems that tools can grow legs. My costs were higher for land than was the Pea's. Her prices for portland cement and rebar are correct. The higher your ceiling the better. The Pea built a three meter ceiling and that's good. I build a two story building with four meter ceilings. That's the same reasoning as her's, just higher. When building the CR's note that the Pea's house has one CR. That is common. You will probably want to add *at least* one more if there are four bedrooms. Also note that there is no double wall system in the Pea's home. This is four-inch hollow-block with 'wrapping' (a cement lathe) smooth covering and possibly a skim-coat of a true plaster before the paint. Concrete is a heat sink. God Bless the Filipino, but unless you want to live in an oven or spend a fortune on unnecessary extra air-conditioning, inside the concrete wall use cheap steel "2x3'" studs and add an interior wall of a fiberboard (brands like shera board or hardiflex). It will keep your home cooler and will also be cheaper to cool with the AC. Also note that Pea's electrical was inside the concrete wall. Hopefully she had conduit, though I am not sure her budget allowed for it. Use rigid conduit and if you are putting in the double wall, run in the gap. :-) enjoy!

Great job building your parents home. It is amazing what you and your family have done. Back in 1980 my brother's and our friends were our grandfather's laborers as well as my Mom. That built them a house that is now over 10 times in the initial cost. Your home will remain a family home for many generations. Congratulations. My mom still lives in her home at 87.

Thank you Pea for the update on your house build. Great to see the love you have for your family. Here in Australia the price of building materials have increased by a minimum of 60% that's if it's in stock. A lot of our building materials are imported from overseas which is causing material shortages. And another huge problem with having a house built here now is the high demand for qualified builders ( and 'tradies' tradesman). Since the pandemic all industries are suffering from staff shortages. Here in Southeast Queensland where I live if you can get a building company to give you a guaranteed start date most builders are saying 12 to 18 months to finish the build.

Wow, that is an amazing house build. Features that few expect (electricity everywhere), while following the Star Trek Ferengi code. "Exploitation begins at home." But seriously, having family build the house, even when you pay them is an experience that they will remember every time they come to visit. We built this home is a powerful emotion for a guy. Oh, one last thing, keep the outhouse. Four bedrooms, brings guests, but one bathroom is a problem when a line forms at the door.

Pea, I'm really impressed! I believe that in the west we born giving for granted everything we have, and very often we expect to have more and more. Thinking what you did, your progresses, where you started, what you achieved and now what you doing to your family, strikes deeply in my heart. In the end, we westerners may be richer than Filipinos in terms of money, but in reality we are definitely the poorest people in terms of feelings and values. I don't want to generalize because I'm sure there are still people who have values and feelings, but the West is a decadent giant in this sense. I'm starting to understand why the bond within the family it's so strong in the philippines and why sometimes it's so hard for filipinas to live abroad and leave everything behind. In the west we think about money very often, and very often we do it by thinking about useless things; these videos are really opening our eyes and force us to re-think about what's really important in the life. You have a wonderful family and it's amazing that everyone took part in your project. I don't think we could achieve that bond level in the west anymore, it's really impressive. I definitely should pay a visit to this wonderful country and maybe start a new life. Who knows! 😊

That's a beautiful house you built for your family. I have to say I've never heard of the term "water closet" for a shower, I've heard of a wet room. I'm English and living in London, UK. A thought for you. Why not look into solar panels for your parent's house, and thus reduce your electricity cost, especially in your sunny, hot climate. Good Luck

Wow! I really like the design, I'm guessing you handled that too. Covering the two porches will also make the house cooler, this was standard before air conditioning in old southern homes in the U.S. The recessed lighting is also great. Did you put screens in the windows? 25K is the price of a midsized car in the U.S. If I build a home I know who to contact as my advisor.

Yes, way to go, reinforced concrete and steel, no worry with typhoon and termites. I understand after a disaster the prices go up and hard to get materials. Its happened here in Australia ( Brisbane) with all the severe flooding this year. A lot of the large stockists and distribution centers for materials were badly damaged and they lost a huge amount of stock in the floods, could not move it in time. Still many businesses not open here. So it just complicates an already difficult situation.

Very impressive job Pea! I mean, that includes your dedication to your family (pretty normal in Philippines I know, but still) Your ability and willingness to plan (not so normal in Philippines, I know) Your ability to clearly communicate in great English (that's rare) One thing to mention 🙂 You should probably make sure that all outlets in the house have a ground wire, not just two wire system that's prevalent here and also would recommend installing GFI outlets in "wet areas" including the ones outside.

Another great episode Miss Pea. The house looks great. My whole family are masonry contractors we work commercial properties here in America. Did you have an architect draw up the plans for the home? I was wondering because when I get there I want to build a house and I didn't know whether I needed blueprints and an engineer for the structure. And I have many many questions about if there are building codes. But the house looks beautiful and you have given me lots of good ideas. I live in upstate New York and it gets cold in the winter time so our ceilings aren't as high. I love the second story porch and the seating outside. Hopefully I will hear from you about some of my building questions that you might be able to answer. Thank you again and God bless you and your family

This goes without saying obviously, but Filipina Pea, you are a major success story so far in your young life. Not to be the least bit patronizing at all, you are a major feel good story to me! Picturing you, in my head, back as a child in your "shack" (as you called it) family home, and seeing now what you've become and what you are building for your beloved family is powerful stuff. So is seeing your skilled family building something so nice like this house. I couldn't do it. Don't know many that could either. Hats off to you all. 👏 I hope you continue to live a blessed life. 🙏
