Building a huge shower, Backer board to waterproofing and pan. Huge, monster shower installation from studs to waterproofing using modern materials and traditional mud floor combined to create a waterproof shower. This shower has an area for a tub, the shower floor and main floor a both heated with radiant electric heat by Schluter Ditra Heat floor warming system. Wallboard used is a lightweight foam board by Laticrete Hydro Ban Board, used on the shower walls to create a water tight environment suitable for a shower. The very large shower floor was created with a level area where the tub will sit and a sloped area for the shower portion, sloped to a Schluter Vario linear drain. The floor was floated with deck mud and then covered with Ditra heat membrane for the heat wire element, then sealed with a sheet membrane as required in a wet area. A very large format 2'x4' porcelain tile will be used on the shower walls and a 12"x24" porcelain tile will be used on the shower floor. This video time lapse shows the entire installation from the studs and the waterproofing layer and the shower floor area including the heated shower floor. All tile installed by Sal DiBlasi, Elite-tile Company, in the Boston North Shore area. I do the pre slope method, waterproof(fabric + liquid just to be safe), final mud layer, then shlutter ditra to the drain… I will try this method too!!

Awesome video! Why wouldn't the homeowner spend the extra money to insulate all the walls, especially the one with the water lines?

Awesome job here. How did you handle that little sloped area from the tub area to the bench?I would expect that little area to pitch toward the center of the shower area so that it could run to the drain but I know you said you were putting large tile on the floor so that would be tough to tile without reliefs there (which may not look good). Did you just keep the same slope in that corner as the rest of the shower pan (which would direct the water to the bench)? Hopefully what I’m asking makes sense!

That curb height would annoy the F-out of me, I would be stubbing my toe on it constantly. Tile work looks awesome though.

Amazing job as usual Sal. What's the reason to leave that stick in the middle of the mud bed?

Foam screed. pitch under the tub is 1/8 per foot. Shower area 1/4 per foot.

@@SalDiBlasiif you had floated the walls with mud would you have used foam screed board? Would you have left it in the walls as well? Nice job!!

Hello. Can you tell me please which of these thinset good for setting tile and uncoupling mambrane, Keraflex SG and Laticrete 252
@SalDiBlasi
@SalDiBlasi 21 күн бұрын
Either will work, but the sg is a large format tile mortar (H.T.E.) and I have found these types of mortars don't do as well with transfer when setting membranes. the Laticrete might be a better choice in this case. They are both lower end mortars but both meet ANSI A118.11

The order doesn't matter. Just needs a 2" over lap. Doing the membrane last is better though, it stops knee prints and foot prints from forming

Hi Sal, I think you help a lot of people raise their skill levels. I know I've learned a few things. Thanks for that! One question - you installed the Hydro-Ban floor fleece over the Schluter corner strips. I would have thought it a bit safer to do it the other order. Do you think that order is arbitrary in this case? Looking forward to seeing this job progress!

He has addressed this in another video and manufacturer says there is no order of operation when it comes to doing the corners/strips over or under the floor fleece

What is the reasoning behind installing the HydroBan membrane on top of the DITRA? Is the DITRA not already waterproof?
