Definitely one of the best manual tyre changers I've seen. Like the little touches like the bead breaker clamp. Would suggest a duck bill head, but if your only doing old steels then probably easier with just the bar.

The bar does aluminum wheels without any marring. only plastic touches the top of the wheel. I considered a duck bill, but not only would i have to buy the duck bill, but i would have to have a centering cone machined. I have seen duck bills put on the end of bars, but they are made of soft material and wear out quickly. please bear in mind that it was well below freezing that day which makes rubber very unstretchy. The bar actually works very well, although after you build something you can always see ways to improve it. thanks for your thoughts and have a great day!

I love your design. You could always use a spray bottle with a little dish soap and water after to break the bead will help the bead come off the rim extremely easy. You will see the difference with dish soap and without.

My house was built in the mid 70's and vinyl siding was put right over top of them old asbestos shingles. Fairly certain I'll die from the big C one way or another. If not the grinding dust, welding fumes, tap water. Micro plastics will get me. That or a random car accident 😂

Propane is pressurized up to 200 psi, a propane tank is one of the safest "recycled air tanks" you could use.

I love this, one of the most well thought out designs I've seen. I've got and old balloon helium tank, they're rated for 200 plus psi. I was gonna make it into a portable air tank, but now I've got a better idea thanks to ya'all

Man that is a nice designed tire changer. Idk if I have the ability to duplicate it though. I have the HF one and it is a pain in the ass to use.

Thanks. I started out thinking I was going to copy a HF but make it a little beefier, but then i started thinking wouldn't it be nice if... which is always what happens when I build something. I'm not a welder. it's not about skill. I just think while i'm building, that I want something that I will like, and a little more time here or there is worth it to end up with something that i will be able to use for years.

it's obviously very cold there,,,,,,,that makes it really hard to do. Even as cold as that rubber is it works extremely well,,,, it will work fantastic when things warm up! Great job!

The only improvement I would suggest is to make your tire soap dispenser removable. so it can be removed during cold temperatures. because tire soap is a must for changing tires.

I'm going to build a bead breaker with an air cylinder so I don't have to fight it as much. I like your idea though. It looks as though you put a lot of thought into this project. My manual breaker bar is a handle from a hydraulic shop jack. I bought my horrid freight tire changer for $15 USD, and it was missing that handle. It's definitely heavy duty, but fortunately not OEM. I found an antique tire spoon at the scrap yard, and added it to my tire tool collection. Get a piece of stainless steel antenna to make your new shmutz brush. It might not be that expensive that way.

How long from start to finish were you able to complete this project?

We worked on this on and off for about six months. Actual work, it would probably take is three or four days once we had a good idea of what to do. Thinking it out is what took the most time.

Interesting build and details for a tire changer while I just got mine from harbor freight and tweek it a bit for my tires... the main problem that I see on this one is the old propane tank that will be holding all that pressure expanding and contracting many many times while those tanks are supposed to be hydro tested every 12 years by law to avoid a catastrophic accident and you have welded that tank from just about everywhere and is not serviceable ever , imagine that when a tire explodes at 35psi now imagine a metal tank at 100psi , it will hurt anyone close by and even the building... I would build it with the tank far away from the operator just in case shit !... applaud you for the ingenuity but I worked with gas tanks and I would not feel safe working close to that mini bomb... just my worthless 2 cents.

Started with a tank that was un-weathered. The average internal pressure of a propane tank is about 150 PSI., while we're running it at 80PSI. Air compressor tanks are welded on all over. In the event of a failure, the tank would split. It would not BLEVE, nor would it be a combustion explosion. Of course, I was wrong once before HaHa!!

Great job! But, I was looking forward to seeing how the blast of air worked under the tire (and the hooks), and you didn't show it! So, I still don't understand that part ....

watch the part of the vid where we show how the crank squeezes the tire and you can see how the nozzles point right where the tire meets the rim, no matter what the tire size is.

@@workingwithjoe841 Yes, but when you inflate the tire, it looks like the hooks and nozzles would still be in place on the rim, not letting the tire expand properly. I looked again, and you just picked up the tire after inflating it. So, I assume you unscrewed all the lower hooks, first. But, then how did the nozzle help inflate the tire if it was no longer in place?

Right after we step on the blast, we unscrew the hooks. A couple of times we forgot and the tire was stuck on the machine, but if you loosen it right away , when the bead pops it just pushes out of the hooks.

A friend of mine hf tire changer and a cheap blast bottle that he would hold against the bead and open a valve. That's what started the whole thing. I wanted to see if i could combine the two. I have never seen anything like it, but it does incorporate a lot of standard design.

That's not neoprene... Most likely HDPE... Neoprene is the type of stuff that wet suits are made out of... Kind of a closed cell spongy rubber...

Mount your tank valve down so it doesn't fill up with water it will rust out.

compressed air from the compressor comes warm or eventually hot if long running and that hot air cools inside the tank crating water vapor and also every time the air inside is released like a punch of pressure it also releases water vapor inside the tank and inside the tire because water friction, yes it will rust the interior even if drain all the time that`s why that old propane tank needs to be serviceable/ hydro tested as intended every 12 years but even more now that will be re used as something else containing water as well... tank should be somewhere else in my opinion away from the operator.

You only have to have it happen once. The bottom blew out of mine @ 160 psi. Cracked a 4" fiberglass concrete floor, blew out the steel wall 4 feet, smashed the garage door track. The power cord kept it from exiting the building. I was under a car 20 feet away. I couldn't hear for 2 days. The auto drain feature was not working properly. My new compressor has a manual drain.
