In episode 24 of Building A Modular Model Railway I take the modelling to new heights... er literally!
As you see from the early parts of this video, I originally had a completely different plan for this particular module. Not one to back down in the face of defeat though, I reworked my ideas to create an embankment for the railway line instead. The result is a really unique part of the layout which is great for watching the trains rumble by!

Great idea and lots to consider. May I suggest for the next module or as a replacement module for the future, a cobbled street and small village scene, angled across the board the longest way and give pitley its village namesake. Just a thought a quaint village still paved with its cobble stone Road way. As a traditional village it would also be the tourist destination in it self. Just a thought

Ooh interesting idea! I have considered creating the village of Pitley before but the issue I've always run into is that, while the layout itself is fairly large, the individual modules don't have much space once you put the track down. But I'd definitely like to include a town or village scene somewhere in the future. Thanks for watching 🤩

Me too, it's something I want to do but the micro cameras I've looked at so far either don't fit the loading gauge or the video quality doesn't reach my (admittedly high) standards. We'll get there eventually though! Thanks for watching 😃

This scene looks great ideal for getting a different view point for filming. One other detail you could add are sections of rail (usually straight) in the middle of the running track which can actually be seen on many preserved railways and sometimes the mainline giving a hint that the P way gang are to be replacing rail in a section of rail soon. This could be added to any of your modules.

I actually have exactly what you describe on the yard module already, just by the shed on the yard module are a couple of discarded rails complete with a a volunteer in hi-vis nearby. Thanks for watching 😃

I'm just about to start a 2x6x1ft shelf layout and one of the tracks will be raised and one lower. I have the same bridge and fencing here ready to add and I am waiting for stones to make my own walls. It will roughly be set in Derbyshire where I live and just have a halt, some farm buildings and some water. I am out for dinner at 6pm but will watch this later. I want my shelf layout more for filming, than anything else.

@modelrailwaynoob what sort of shelf ? You may want to check out my build as I ran into problems with front to back level causing connection problems on bends. At the moment contemplating what to do about fixing it 😢

Love this module, and can't wait for the next one with the cutting. For the module joints although, i'd have used the Railtech ones which also are ato-adjusting plus are more discreet than the screws as the base is cut to imitate a set of ties... I plan of using those for my N scale modules as they exist for OO, N, OO9 and even 7mil I think.

Do you mean the Model Tech ones? They didn't actually exist when I first started building this layout so I had to set the standards without them. They do look good although I would say that the screws I use are hidden under the ballast so you can't see them. The screws have the advantage of anchoring themselves into the frame of the baseboard too making the rails really strong when moving the modules around. Thanks for watching 😃

Hello mate. This is a brilliant video and series, my wife and I really enjoy watching them. One tip I was told years ago was mixing up a plaster slurry mix, obviously with brown paint to go over the mod rock. This helps to seal everything in. Hope this helps anyone.

Yes you can put plaster over the mod roc if you want, although I've found it doesn't really make much difference unless you really want a nice smooth surface for the scenics. As I end up covering it with static grass usually I don't tend to bother as you can't see the layer of filler/mod roc underneath it all anyway. Thanks for watching 😃

Yeah I'm still gutted about the viaduct...hopefully I can find a way to include it in the future. If there are any future exhibitions for either layout I'll be sure to let everyone know. It's so nice that having been watching your videos (and occasionally commenting on) for over three years, you've gone from someone who was trying out things for pretty much the first time to one who is now well skilled in many techniques. The layout has come along really well and the two additional modules are excellent additions that will offer extra interest to viewers. As others have said the offcut of track on the bridge is a nice touch, alluding to the history of the line. Just one little thing on this though, where the track crosses the module joints the end plates you had cut are only designed for single track and the bed is central to the undulations of the landscape. At certain angles it appears there couldn't have been two tracks passing over the joints. It's probably just the way I'm looking at it, but I did find it noticeable a couple of times during the video. I only thought I'd mention it as it may have been something you hadn't noticed. Looking forward to the next episode reveals.

Really glad to hear you've been enjoying following the progress on the layout. So regarding the position of the track, I did consider representing the whole line as if it had once had double track but when I looked at heritage railways (especially the ones I was trying to emulate) for the most part you can't actually see where the second line was. When riding in the cab of a diesel you can often see the surrounding area has been taken over by nature again. The heritage line is a very thin strip and it's only at key points like tunnels or bridges where evidence of the original width remains. I will admit this was also convenient for the construction of the modules too. The endplates need to be symmetrical, as if the track had been offset to one side then they wouldn't be reversible. Even if the old track bed had been represented scenically, it would switch sides depending on the orientation of each module. Obviously a model railway is all about compromise and by doing it this way I've been able to fit in the scenery I want to as well as still getting the functionality of a modular style layout. @@ThatModelRailwayGuy I've enjoyed the construction of the modular railway in particular, seeing it come together and the explanation of how the system works. The fact that it is reversible and has been designed to view either from the inside or outside had escaped me for the minute. I'll put it down to my age and a touch of my ocd, everything in its place etc. As I said its excellent and a good example of what individuals can do when starting from scratch if they plan it out first.

I find it tends to depend on the location you're modelling. In my instance the landscape tended to rise up around the railways aside from small isolated sections like this. Thanks for watching 👍

Really nice job on the module. Such a shame you couldn't manage the viaduct. Do you find those brass screws work as well as the copper sleepers many people use at the edge of modules? I'm asking mainly as I'm about to commence a modular build that will probably be moved a couple of times a year and want something reliable. Cheers!

I think it's personal preference over which you want to use but I personally like using the screws since you can really anchor them into frame of the baseboard. That makes the rails really strong where the copper clad sleepers rely on whatever you use to bond them to the baseboard surface. Thanks for watching 😃

The original plan was indeed for the viaduct to have a river running underneath. I did consider it with this small occupational bridge instead but it wouldn't have looked right. I'm hoping I can do water on another module or layout in the future. Thanks for watching 😃

Err honestly I'm not sure... probably around 350℃ but generally I just switch the iron on and wait a minute or so for it to get hot 😅 Really glad you've been enjoying the videos! 2024 is looking very exciting too with the culmination of this layout and several more projects coming in the near future too! Not a modeller myself, but that is very good, I think the layered 'cover' works well, only thing I would say is the wire fencing needs darkening a bit, perhaps some rust. the laser cut fencing is very realistic

Glad you enjoyed it. Yeah there's lots of little details like that across the entire layout which need some touch ups. The general idea was to get the layout looking finished for the exhibition deadline, then add lots of extra detail in the future when I have more time. Thanks for watching 👍

I was thinking that you should have continued laying ballast over the abandoned part of track bead right to the ends of the module. Then, I would possibly leave a few sleepers in position before covering the area with the overgrown foliage. The fencing might need some diagonal suports at the corners to prevent the fence from collapsing. I like what you have done so far. 24:38

The ballast would be long gone by this point though. Similarly any spare sleepers that were still usable would have been repurposed elsewhere. It's why you don't generally see much evidence of the second line on most heritage railways these days. I agree with the fence posts and there's lots of little details like this around the railway that need doing. Bear in mind that these modules aren't "finished" by any standard. I'm just getting them to a point where they look presentable for the exhibition. Once I'm not working to such a tight deadline I'll be able to go back and spend time putting in all the little details. Thanks for watching 😃

As I explained in the video the issue is space. The modules are a certain size and I don't have room for any more. If space was no object I'd have a 12 arch viaduct spanning one side of the layout but until someone decides to fund an extension to my house it won't be happening. Thanks for watching 😃

The original plan for the viaduct was to have the railway run over a river. I did consider doing it with the occupational bridge but it wouldn't have looked right in my opinion. Thanks for watching 😃

Are any of your locomotives or rolling stock too heavy for that bridge? If not, I wonder how much weight it could hold, might be a fun experiment to run if you have a spare bridge left.

I wouldn't have thought so. The kit itself is fairly sturdy but don't forget the track bed is held up by the laser cut structure underneath it too so it would have to be pretty hefty to make it collapse... I don't think it would budge even with a O Gauge loco to be honest. Thanks for watching 🤩

As a complete beginner, I've a 30ft by 6ft loft board (fixed) to work on and am scared stiff about starting and cocking it all up. Having just dipped into t'interweb to work out what to do first (I'm at the thinking and initial sketching phase) came across this series of vids and joined instantly. I'll start at Vid 1 and try and grow a pair. I'm as interested in the scenery as the trains so will look forward to using some of the old second hand track in the background. I'm also learning how to use by laser printer and cutter and am getting better though my first attempts will look good in my derelict Victorian factory and train scrapyard area. . Any ideas as to first steps very gratefully received.

It's perfectly natural to be overwhelmed, especially when you have such a large canvas to work with. My suggestion would be to start small with something like the inglenook puzzle - you can build this out in one small area of your board and use it to practice the essentials like track laying, wiring and scenery. Then later on there's no reason why you can't incorporate it into the rest of the layout once you've finalised the overall design. Hope that helps and thanks for becoming a channel member! 🤩

Hi there, great video! The undergrowth technique looks really good! I went to the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Rly. today and noticed the similarity between their main station at Embsay and Pitley station on your layout - similar building style, similar track layout etc. Is this intentional or just a coincidence? Once again, great video!

Fantastic build. Its odd how you guys don't use foam often as a base under the track which does help raise the line a bit.. your fences are the best and a hoot to always see. I know it might seen late for it or its not that common in the UK im not sure.. usually when we have out of service second tracks like this you can see ties in place on each end and occasionally one rail on each side or rail lengths left in the area but just loose along the line. But im not sure if that is as common in the UK like it is here in the US.

I think in the UK our layouts tend to be more compress meaning more points in smaller areas - having the whole trackbed up on foam can be a bit of a pain when it comes to installing the motors and wiring everything up in that instance. Regarding spare track, you can sometimes see that on actually working lines over here where things have been replaced. On a heritage railway like I'm modelling though anything spare would have been removed for use elsewhere. Thanks for watching 😃

Thanks for alerting me, I've added it now but this is the stuff I use: amzn.to/3RWJlxd (affiliate) It might be a bit over sized for N Gauge, although when it dries it doesn't have as much texture as I was expecting. For N Gauge though that could actually be an advantage as it'll make the scale less obvious so it could work as a base layer to put more scenics over. Thanks for watching 😃

Why does nobody smooth out the plaster on the bandages to fill in the holes like we used to do. Itakes it a much stronger and even surface.

If you look closely in the timelapse, you can see I actually am doing this in certain areas, mostly around the edges where the strips join each other. Personally though I've found it doesn't make a huge amount of difference, especially when it's all going to be covered up anyway. Thanks for watching 👍

The exhibition was a few months ago now I'm afraid as this was all filmed in advance and edited afterwards. I did mention it in earlier episodes at the time and I did a video the week before the show too to promote it further so if the layout does any exhibitions in the future I imagine I'll do the same to let everyone know. They say a layout is never truly finished. I definitely have a few things I want to upgrade and improve after the exhibition... but in terms of building new modules that might be tricky as I'm limited by storage space! Thanks for watching 😃

Just occurred to me, how , long does static grass , keep its shape?

Hard to say - how long does PVA glue hold? It depends on how it's stored. I have layouts that are over 5 years old now and the static grass still looks fine on them. But obviously if you regularly rest your phone/notepad/etc on it then that's going to leave a mark over time. Thanks for watching 😃
