In this episode we kick off the build of our 5.9L Magnum daily driver engine build. Over the coming weeks, we'll fully rebuild the engine trying to keep a low budget with an eye on street drivability but power when we want it.

You no longer have to drill the block for LA heads on the magnum. Comp, Speedmaster, PRW and Harland Sharp all sell oil through pushrod shaft mount rockers for LA heads on magnum blocks.

This is what I have planned for my 96 Dakota.

Just found your build now I gotta watch all the vids. Those cam bearings were a face-palm moment. Cranky old man voice: "You just can't find good help these days."

When I took it back in to have them re-done he made some BS statement like "oh, you'd never notice that". Yeah, maybe, but I'd rather not build the entire motor and find out you're wrong.

I work in a machine shop. We'd never have let that go.. We'd have checked their alignment and adjusted till their correct.

those cam bearings are why i bought my own installation/removal tool.

Back in the 90s we put 273 heads on a 360 damn thing was crazy high compression but she was a beast
@YoshimoshiGarage2 жыл бұрын
My original plan was to put some 318LA heads on this, but since the Magnum blocks aren't drilled to oil the rocker shafts, that idea went out the window.

For my 5.9 magnum street truck I used a freshened long block from Jasper. Dual plane speedmaster air gap intake, 650 brawler carb, stock cam and heads. Comp pushrods and roller rockers. Shorty headers

The most overlooked mod on Magnum engines is COMPUTER TUNING! You can almost make 8.0 truck power on a stock engine with premium fuel tunes.
@hajileserpud9539 Жыл бұрын
Hello sir... So just take vehicle to regular ECU tuner or can someone just buy a Pre- program tune ? Thanks
@timbrwolf11218 ай бұрын
@@hajileserpud9539 Youre always better off with a professional tune. That being said, the early 90s fuel injected models are obd1.5 and can not be tuned without physically messing with the circuits on the ecu.

Any upgrade in magnum roller cam shaft will be expensive. Cam $$. And then valve springs will need improvement and costly machining may be involved to rid those weak stock beehive springs. - take the stock cam and advance it 4* and run a nice small Edelbrock carb with curved distributor.
@YoshimoshiGarage2 жыл бұрын
Yes, magnum cams are ridiculous expensive. I went back with the stock, and a lot more than 4 degrees

I just bought my dads 97 ram 1500 4x4 and the crank or cam shaft broke going to rebuild the factory one if I can
@YoshimoshiGarage2 жыл бұрын
I'd definitely think it's more likely a timing chain or something like that. broken crank/cam on a stock output motor would be really, really unusual. Keep us updated on how it goes, though!

Hey man what's like a rough idea on how much a rebuild should cost I'm looking to rebuild my 1997 5.9
@YoshimoshiGarage2 жыл бұрын
It hugely depends on if the bore is good enough to re-use the existing pistons and the condition of the valves and seats. If you can re-use the pistons and valves then it's basically rings, rods, mains, timing set and gaskets which should be under $300 depending on brands of parts. That assumes you have the tools, of course. If it needs machine work, or you want to add performance parts, the price goes up from there.

I’d be pissed if I paid for them to install and they were off like that

I’m doing the exact thing 360 magnum in my 74 d100
@YoshimoshiGarage3 жыл бұрын
If you've not gotten to the cam yet, you might want to take a look at the timing. If you already built it, I'll be interested to hear your results. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gMuieqyClr-rfZs.html

Slow down drill speed. Never going to get 45 degree crosshatch pattern at that drill RPM.

I'm a little disappointed that you didn't get to tell me not to over-tighten anything.

Give I time. This will be a long series so I'll cover it.
