Hey everyone and welcome back to more Railroads Online! Today we are finally going to build an initial line to the smelter in order to get more advanced products! The smelter seems to be way down in a valley so in order to get there we are going to have to map a proper route that follows the mountain side as closely as possible to reduce the overall grade of the route!

when railroads began replacing their old wooden bridges, in places where they could, they would create large land fills. Instead of building a bridge because of the cost. You can see them where old lines used to be or on google earth.

It was nice to see you being smart, and not laying mile long spans of bridge like a certain couple of people. It's kind of shocking to see how steep gradients need to be in this game. 2% is considered STEEP on real world railways. You probably wouldn't see 3 or 4 % on spans longer than a couple hundred meters, and certainly never on a mainline. and it kind of baffles me how powerful that little 0-4-0 is. I get that it's the starter engine, but jeez, that thing can move!

I cannot begin to say how much I am enjoying this series with Railroads Online, not only was I able to figure out who you are and your content but the game itself even in a early access is just fantastic to see and play. Granted that there are a few complications here or there but it dosen't mean things cannot be fixed or altered, maybe the developer might add a crossing for example to help show the parallel of lines and their spacing, maybe add a tractor as a different way to load up certain cargo (not trying to make it sound like farming simulator) that can make profit and expand locations on the map. The time and effort as well as the creativity you and your friend put into this really let's us all know how much you want this to be as realistic and fun as possible, testing other locomotives out and giving each a purpose, making alternative ways to properly place track perfectly straight, avoiding to use things like being able to rerail locomotive without the use of cranes or breakdown trains. Seeing this is honestly a great way to make my day and brainstorm ideas as well as thoughts of "what would" or "what if" to help make your railroad truly come to life. Your creativity is endless and however you want to run your railway is fine because it's yours to own and have fun with, I just figured I would come out and say to you how appreciative I am for this series, meeting you, and praising the game for what all haft to offer. Hopefully you too are enjoying this and hope to see what other creative ideas you have in the future for us, enjoy yourself and have a good day.

I found the way past the placement bug when in "Alt Straight/Curve" mode: It shouldn't make a difference but the game seems to want the pointer centered between the two rails when you click. If it's off too far to the left or right the game ignores your mouse click. In central Virginia, the Norfolk and Western RR used large embankments of ballast stone to smooth out the foot hills. Bridges are expensive to build and maintain, while the ballast for most railroads is mined locally and relatively cheep. My brother and I used to walk the tracks to squirrel hunt. In places the road bed was 20 to 30 feet above the forest floor which put you eye level with the squirrels in the tops of the trees. It's not as picturesque as a trestle bridge, but for small railroads it's more cost effective. By-the-way, road grades are classified in percent rather than degrees. A 1% grade is 3.6° or roughly 1 foot rise in 100 feet. 3% is 10.8° { n percent/100 * 360 = angle in degrees } [EDIT: divide the result by 4. 3.6 / 4 = 0.9 = a 1% grade = 0.9°]
@ThePDXMike1
@ThePDXMike1 2 жыл бұрын
The converter I found on the web is 1 deg = 1.75% BUT it is not apparent to me whether the game is really showing degrees or percentage.
@3DPDK
@3DPDK 2 жыл бұрын
@@ThePDXMike1 The formula I (incorrectly) listed determines what percent any angle is of a full circle - which is useless in designing road layouts. The railroad surveyors use 1 foot in 100 ; the 1 foot being 1% of 100 feet. 1 meter in 100 also works .... as a matter of fact 1 cubit in 100 works, too. Since we and railroad surveyors are only interested in 0° (horizontal) to 90°(vertical), the formula I listed is correct if you divide the result by 4, or n% times 0.9 = angle. (intuitive proof: 45° is half or 50% of 90° so 50% times .9 = 45 in degrees) 1.75 converts angle of direction change (arctangent) to degrees of curve (of any given radius from it's center) - more for figuring out the layout of a curve (I think - my geometry is really rusty). As far as the game goes, the slope gradient seems to be correct, but the curve algorithm to smooth out track and road bed (in "Alt-curve" mode) needs (a lot of) work or I'm doing it wrong.
@jordananderson2728
@jordananderson2728 2 жыл бұрын
@@3DPDK A 50% grade is 50 unit of rise/fall for 100 unit of run, and so couldn't be a 45° angle. A 45° slope would be 100 unit of rise/fall for 100 unit of run-a 45/45/90 right triangle has equal side lengths.
@DarkSolZero
@DarkSolZero 2 жыл бұрын
I'm jealous of your route and your smooth angles, mine works and it's fun to traverse, but yours looks really clean. I'll be interested to see how you make your yard, and one thing I'll tell you, on the side with the ore and the cord wood, it's possible to make that a single through line, even though it ends up with the docking stations on opposite sides of the rail. You just need to bring up your rail height to be above that small pile of ore. You are able to unload the ore car on the back side just fine, it's how I ran my line. I've not seen anybody else do this, instead they either make a sharp jag in the track, or run two lanes and back in/out.

Degrees and Percentages don't line up. 1 percent means that for every 100 units of length you gain 1 unit of length in altitude. You can calculate the slope in degrees like this: Slope in degrees = arctan(x), where x is the Percentage converted to a decimal number (e.g. 3% = 0.03) arctan(0.03) = 1.72°

@blademaster2390
@blademaster2390 Жыл бұрын
Part of that is because of cost. I mean, think about how expensive it’d be to make that massive steel bridge down the valley irl - it’d cost millions just for the first 100 ft or so. There’s a reason a lot of logging railways use exclusively wooden trestle bridges - they’re cheap, especially in a forested area, cause…your building material is _literally_ only a few feet away at all times.

Sidehilling along a countour of the slope like you're doing at 24:35 is pretty much how I do all my rails these days (but with bridges or stone like you're saying). Makes it so that it's just as easy to build on a mountain slop as building in the flat plains imo. In fact, since the cost of building the stone foundations or even bridges isn't factored into the game yet, I just go straight over the mountains for most of my tracks now lol. Very scenic. Not very cheap irl.

Yep kan is definitely the best who's playing this.. Ty sir for making it realistic.. Like who tf would put a 5 km long bridge across a whole valley (other youtubers do) but u man.. If i were playing i couldn't have done any better.. All on point. I suggest using the Y junctions more often Like from sawmil u can draw a line heading east to halfway of map then do a Y headed both ways to iron ore and smelter.. With that you'd have faster rout and more connections for future

Even the mountains in Alberta and BC have huge ballast pile foundations like that on the railroads

In my home village there was a small section of track that crossed a creek, maybe 2m wide. The track just kind of floated over, not supported by anything but the rail itself, and was bolted down into a concrete block on each side. When I was little, only this section still existed, but it was removed to build a footbridge some years ago.

you should add a rail splitter on each loop for every pick up and drop off point, add it right before the turn off the loop after picking up things so that way you can choose either to go around in a circle or go back to base

Hello, kAN Concerning the iron mine route, what you can do is make a track that goes from the fright depo to the iron mine and it will be much easier to make and it will be already connected to the smelter and this will save you a lot of time i believe. Btw i love your series it is so relaxing.

Lol Duluth, Minnesota USA, I had ones bigger than that up the street from me, and yeah, a bit dangerous to. Fall off a 4 foot gravel foundation to another 4 feet into the ditch and you want to minimize them as well.

Most railways around the world use large embankments like that, it's the only way to get through terrain. You really want to keep any gradient to an absolute minimum, and the curves as large radius as you can fit. Then you'll be able to run longer trains at higher speed.

They need to add a feature where you can draw a line on the map and it appears on the ground so you can follow it. That way you can get a rough estimate of the route you want to take.

Hey. love the videos. A couple of pointers from a guy who's learnt about US steam. Porter - this is a short line switching engine. The specs are WAAY too strong. But I get it - it makes early levels easier. In real life (no not necessarily the game physics) Porter - 0-2% grades. 1-6 loaded freight cars. Slow (little wheels). Weak (small boiler and pistons) Climax - 0-4% grades. 1-10 loaded freight cars. Slow (geared). Strong (big boiler and 2 big pistons) Shay - 0-6% grades. 1-12 loaded freight cards. Slow (lower geared). V Strong (big boiler, 3 big pistons) Eureka - 0-1% grades. Made for flat runs over the US prairies with 1-3 passenger cars or 1-3 freight cars. Fast. Weak. So that's why Eureka is at the end of the tech tree list - it's for long runs later in the game. Based on your inability to find a 2% path to the mine I think you're going about it the wrong way. Your plan of 3% for lots of miles dragging the freight cars out isn't going to work. (except the Porter being out of whack). You're also running the track far too straight. In the hills it's slow driving with a lot of twisting track hugging the hillside to keep the grade as shallow as possible even if it adds a lot of distance. The general surveying rule of where you go is equal cut to fill. i.e. when you cut into the hillside right next to it you push it to build up the drops. Then you use trestles often. If it were me I'd slog out getting some more logs and timber sold to buy a climax (which is a good intermediate between rod engines and geared engines). Then run the climax to the mine at 4-5%. I'm looking forward to the next video!

Your musings regarding dealing with the steel trestle Elgin Illinois has a single track bridge over the Fox River that was built by the Milwaukee Road around 1905 and until they replaced the bridge with a new double track bridge a few years ago your exact solution was what they did with the double track switching down to a single track for the bridge right before and after.

If you make the track (for the iron mine) go directly from your smelter underneath your big metal bridge then you will already be nice and low and can snake through the bottom of the valley. Plus that'll be cool having a track go underneath a bridge you already made. Just a friendly suggestion, loving this game and your videos.
