Presenting to you, the Teal Stone Mini Hutch!
AKA, The Buck Hutch 🐇
This hutch is designed to hold four 30x30 cages for medium/large breed rabbits. After falling in love with wayyy too many silver fox bucks, I have found it to be the perfect solution to house them all. I would also like to add that this hutch would be perfect for a quarantine setup, and if I ever downsize that is what I will be using it for.

Thanks so much for your videos. I've been toying with the idea of rabbits. I have large gardens and could really use the manure. I was offered a pair of breeding rabbits last weekend, but passed, which has had me thinking more on the idea. I'm right now building a hen house for my chicken coop structure. 18 day old chicks in the living room, time to relocate. I have a great shady location for both the chicken coop and rabbit hutch structure, but have to reclaim the area from overgrowth.

I was thinking about building my next hutch like yours (double stacked). The one I just built is very similar in design. I love your hutches so much!! So beautiful and practical at the same time. What paint do you use? I had someone reccommend using galvanized pipe on the areas the cages rest on so that I could bleach and use a torch on to sterilize. Is the paint something that could be bleached for sanitation and hold up? I love the look of the painted wood so much more than pipe.
@TealStoneHomestead
@TealStoneHomestead 3 жыл бұрын
Pipe would be a good option too! I use valspar exterior paint. You can scrub it down really good. I’m sure it won’t hold up as well as metal, but I chose beauty over practicality here... a quick recoat of paint every year or two isn’t so bad 😊
@summerpaulsen6847

@@summerpaulsen6847 I’m sure there are people out there who would not agree, but the cages touch only a small portion of the wood. Do whatever you think is best for you! This smaller hutch didn’t cost a whole lot since I had scrap material to use, as well as the cages already. So I think the frame was around $150. It’s hard to say with the rising lumber prices the year!

30*30 is a lot smaller than the minimum you would put a pet rabbit in (48*48). Is this so the rabbits can get fat, don't build muscle, or save on space.

@@cecileranciere325 You put just one rabbit in a cage 48x48? That seems like more the size of a grow out pin for a litter. But that's just my opinion, and I don't even have rabbits yet. Just continually doing my research and enjoying other peoples bunnies until I can have my own. 😁

Oh, I see what you’re saying. No, I don’t think it would hurt meat quality at all. I always say the bigger cage space, the better. My breeders get either 30x30 or 30x36. My growout pens are 3ft x 6ft. Growing up I have always followed the ARBA’s guidelines for cage space. Minimum for breeds like the silver fox would be 24x24. That seems a bit small to me, so I try to go bigger. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with giving your rabbits more room! 😊 though reaching back 48” sounds almost impossible 😂

PLEASE cover the mesh on the floor! they get bumble foot from that!
@TealStoneHomestead
@TealStoneHomestead 3 жыл бұрын
It is a common misconception that rabbits get sore hocks from wire bottom floors. Rabbits don’t have paw pads like cats and dogs. The bottom of their feet is plush fur, therefor is is more important to keep them out of urine and waste as that can cause health issues. Sore hocks are commonly a genetic problem, and good breeders do not breed animals with that problem 😊
@danielgriffith8911
@danielgriffith8911 3 жыл бұрын
there are plastic inserts you can buy to provide another type of surface for the cage floor. One tile placed in the center is a fine option if you are worried about it. You will likely find that your rabbits dont prefer them to the screen floor... they like to be cool and the mesh cools them better. I do a coated half by half mesh floor and yes, I have to clean more poop that gets caught on the wire, but it does fall through and they dont eat the coating.
@juleswins3
@juleswins3 3 жыл бұрын
@@TealStoneHomestead Also the way the wire is installed makes a difference. If the bottom wire is installed with the crosswires facing up, it will cause sore hocks but it’s a simple matter to make sure the crosswires are down.
