Thank you for covering this country in a way that wasn't tourist vlog style. Mixing history lessons into your video was classy. As an American, I went to Kyrgyzstan with a tour group of people from Russia, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan before the pandemic. It is such a beautiful country, the people are amazing, food is good, if you love horseback riding it is a core of their cultural. It is difficult not to fall in love with Kyrgyzstan after a couple weeks.

I’ve spent the last four months in Central Asia, and one of the many things I found fascinating is the difference between Kazakhstan/Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan/Tajikistan regarding locals’ optimism when asked “how do you see your future?” My own, at least, experience, having talked to a dozen people in each country, is that young people in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan see a future for themselves in their country. They don’t think prospering and being happy will be a walk in the park, they are fully aware of the problems and challenges, but they did seem pretty optimistic to me, pretty “there are opportunities, things are changing, slowly, but changing”. On the other hand, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan are full, and I mean FULL of “Green Card” offices. It feels like many people’s dream is to leave the country, move preferably to the US or western Europe. Many youngsters I talked to, looked pessimistic, as in, “I’m studying hard to get a diploma which I won’t really be able to use to get a proper job in that field. If I stay here I’ll end up doing something irrelevant to what I’m studying, just to… survive”. Then again, this may be a ridiculously oversimplistic view of a passer-by who passed 30-45 days in each country. I’m just sharing impressions here, not rock-solid research results. Needless to add, excellent piece on Kyrgyzstan. Made me feel like subscribing and watching more videos.

No you’re right, as a Russian and U.S. citizen, I have noticed the more comfortable and high-tech life is for the younger generation, the more spoiled by luxury they are, the more pessimistic and less creative they are… they end up doing the whole “I’m moving to where the grass is greener” ordeal even though it’s a total illusion and the grass is not in fact greener, they just want more than they have already, which is a whole lot… meanwhile American kids just don’t understand there is a world outside of the U.S. in the first place and if you tell them that they will argue that they do understand but I know they don’t actually understand, which is a distinct difference between other nations and the U.S…

they are not developed into democracy and curse of all small countries without democracy is nepotism, so job only to few. All Central Asia too young for democracy, in XXth century with empires help it only ended feudal tribes period with real human markets, 100 years by history is almost yesterday. They can't achieve democracy without living through monarchy, which also not developed, Kazachstan almost made their monarchy, but it's ended without creating aristocracy and elites. Human society developing cycles are universal everywhere. You can't have an egg without chicken, which not born yet. Standard undeveloped country which returning into feudal model, you can be a caveman with iphone in our century, many polinesian tribes proved that.

“I’m glad we don’t have any natural resources” is one of the most low key insightful quotes you’ll hear. Some of the most successful countries are the ones where the people had to fight, earn, and innovate their way to survival without the blessing of energy, mineral, or agricultural wealth. Switzerland, Israel, Rwanda, and to a lesser extent, the Asian tigers like Korea, Taiwan, or Singapore all had to innovate internally without much of any natural resources.

To be fair, Switzerland is innovative because it is tax heaven and this allows them to be innovative and a country which screws developing and poor countries by allowing their wealthy and corrupt to park their money. Same with Singapore, it was innovative before. Now it is another tax heaven. It is not all black and white with every wealthy country.

But you know, this statement is fundamentally wrong. For example, a Canadian company has taken out of the country hundreds of tons of gold, which can cover the annual budget of the country. We have enough resources, but the state does not have the technology to put it into production and there are not enough specialists, and in addition, there is a very high rate of corruption and officials stole so much that your millionaires could not even dream of it. This was truly the biggest robbery of a country in history. In general, Kyrgyzstan is a relatively young country and has no experience in such things.

What an amazing video. Kyrgyzstan has some of the most hospitable people in the world, with a beautiful and proud heritage that is being kept alive. You show a side of the country that is hardly ever exposed - thank you for that! One thing to remember is that some of the remnants of the Soviet school system are the foundation of women's liberation in areas like this. Sciences and arts were taught even in the most remote parts of this otherwise injust and inhumane empire.

@Sjabalis Hello thanks for your positive comment, only one correction: in Kyrgyz culture women have always had equal rights as men, long before Russian colonization due to our nomadic culture. Communism brought a lot of elements of material comfort and alphabetisation among the people, and also death, repression and exodus (near 40% of the population was killed from 1916 to 1930's).

I really enjoyed my trip to Kyrgyzstan last spring. But the fact is, that after visiting Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan I have this feeling that the country that misses the most Soviet Union is Kyrgyzstan out of the three. They still got their Lenins in some places, I even saw primary school bearing his name :)))))) and they still got Militsya instead of Police.

It is technically a Muslim country but Islam was NEVER a big thing in Kyrgyzstan, even before Soviet colonization. Instead it is tradiotional Turkic nomadic culture which defines Kyrgyz society. To be fair rich Arab countries spend a lot of money trying to convert population to their version of Islam nowadays.

How come no one mentioned that East Asian looking people living in Kyrgyzstan are mostly ethnic Mongolian? East Asian looking people living in Uzbekistan are mostly ethnic Lao people they came from southern China during a Tang Dynasty.

@@Kingofthehill84 This is wrong. Kyrgyz people are ancient people of Turkic origin who lived in East Siberia (Baikal region) prior to migrating into Central Asia (see Kyrgyz Kaganate for example). Likely there is some Mongolian and Manchurian genetic admixture but CULTURALLY those are VERY DIFFERENT nations. Kyrgyz are culturally very closely related to Kazakh people, then Usbeks, and after that to the rest of Turkic people: to Uygurs, Tatars, Bashkirs, Turkmen, Azerbaijanis and Turkish people.

Watching this makes me view my country from a different angle, and I'm pleased to see that people are working hard to change Kyrgyzstan for a better future. Kyrgyz society should contemplate the practice of Bride Kidnapping with a more progressive, civilian perspective rather than attaching strictly to traditional methods, along with addressing various other cultural norms and ethics.

Super documentary! I'm a third generation IT professional. The only advice my grandfather and father ever gave me was "Don't study IT!" It's so cyclical you'll never know if you can land a job by the time you graduate. But organic livestock is a golden goose forever. You haven't lived until you've tasted horse meat salami.

That has to be one of Vance's best videos. Color. Action. Adversity and suffering. Indigenous. Hope. And so on. The kids show is very much like my granddaughter, a very high IQ, child watches in Canada and I had wondered where it came from. This documentary should be distributed in First Nations communities in Canada. I'm sure they'd license it commercially because they too want to distribute their arts and ways and they'll all getting wired a fiberoptic speed. They love the content they can get. There's this amazing high tech tool to get their contact info, Google. That's once you get to know their society.
