Күн бұрын

In this series I am building an off grid treehouse cabin in the forest. I build in a sustainable and ecological way in the wilderness and nature. This is episode 5 of The Treehouse Experiment documentary on my channel Building in Nature. The tree house is built in a big oak tree in a beautiful forest in The Netherlands. In this episode the floor beams are installed and the floor structure is finished. The weather is typical Dutch. Sun, rain and a plenty of wind. I spend the first night on the treehouse platform. Exiting times!
I’m Ruud. A designer and filmmaker from The Netherlands. I design and make things.
I hope you enjoy the building process. Have a nice day!

I am enjoying watching you build your tree house. I'm a retired architect and lifelong builder myself. The creativity that it takes to engage all the engineering challenges is clear and logical. Great job! Thanks for sharing this with us.

Great progress on this video. Must feel like a million bucks to be able to walk on the platform! And although your support structure was an engineering feat, the next part will be the fun part. You must be over the moon right now!

I love that you put a lot of effort into creating the resistance structures. My only question would be about the concrete foundation. In the end it also depends on the soil and I don't think the weight of the final structure will be too much to affect the integrity of the foundation. Good luck in completing the project!

Thanks, and thank you for sharing your thoughts! I am in luck with the soil. The solid ground (dense white sand), where they build the foundation of houses on here in The Netherlands, is only about 40cm deep where the treehouse is. So I should be fine. I also made the foundation a bit deeper so it should not be affected by frost if it is a really cold winter.

Bro you are doing a really good work. And you pay a lot of attention to the details. But you should also focus on isolation, you should do the isolation of the floors.
@BuildingInNature

Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I appreciate it. The insulation is planned to be installed later in the build. First I want a water tight roof in place, with the amount of rain we are having the insulation would get wet without a roof in place and this would cause problems.

Finally, you’re using a brush instead of a paper napkin to apply the wood oil 😎👍

Haha, a brush looks a lot better :) and is more precise. The pieces of old cotton fabric I was using go a lot faster if the surfaces are bigger, but it is messy. Nice comment!

It looks amazing. This is probably a silly question, but at 20:23 you see the plywood subfloor, and there is one sheet of plywood that ends just in front of the entrance to the tent. The other sheets are screwed to the beams, but not this sheet. Why is that?
@BuildingInNature
@BuildingInNature 3 ай бұрын
I am impressed. You have a very sharp eye! :) The reason is that we could not wait to put our tent on there because this was a night with perfect weather and it was the first night it was possible! Although the platform was not entirely finished if was safe enough. Some board only had a couple of screws in them. The next day I finished it and screwed the boards to all the beams.

@@BuildingInNatureThat's a good reason! I came across your videos for the first time only last night, when I was looking for inspiration for a project for my little boy. I love the natural hardwood & tung oil, the joinery, and the self-supporting structural design. I also like how you support the inner frame: elevated TABs with bracing rods on two opposing sides and, on the other two opposing sides, posts that come down and incorporate cylinder sleeves to house TABs that mount lower on the tree, with timber bracing members (with origami joinery!) to support further out. And then the oak posts - very cool water shedding and protection method there, using simple sloped concrete footings, membrane and then hardwood blocks to sit the oak posts on. Now I'm so keen for your next episode :)

you should have used cables to hang the platform rather than using two seprates pillar
@BuildingInNature
@BuildingInNature 3 ай бұрын
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Cables can be a very elegant solution! I also like it. It all depends on the situation I think. In my situation with this tree and this design the posts seemed the best option. Maybe I will add an extension with some cables in the future :)
@PreetSingh-vg4dh
@PreetSingh-vg4dh 3 ай бұрын
@@BuildingInNature yeah bold it in the tree like above two floors then use cable to hang the roof of the house. then with that cable attach the pillar to the platform.
