I make similar ones that I donate to various churches for the Christmas bake sales. My difference is I paint them a white and green rustic look, and I hang smaller ornaments (usually 1-1 1/2" red bells) from small eyehooks. The eyehooks take the longest time in the process to put in the tops of the holes.

You could easily double the number of trees you get out of each board. After you've drawn your lines, DON'T cut out the holes yet. Make your straight cuts first, then glue the off cuts together to make another identical triangle. Cut the holes afterward, and just like that, you have twice the trees. You can use the piece of scrap left over from the initial cuts to make the bases.

There is another video out there that shows how to cut the angles on the chop saw. Granted, they're not 1x8. The person uses simple 1x6 fence pickets and cuts, I believe 22-degree angles. Thus, there is no need for the table saw.

Nice idea, but i think hooks hanging down to hold the ornaments would look & work a lot better. They would jiggle about a bit & look nicer. You could also cut smaller holes toward the top (and use smaller ornaments) & use larger holes as you move down. All in all, a pretty easy project. Thanks.

What a fun project! I _will_ be making a few of these! And ya know... There is a way to get more trees out of a board with fewer cuts and with no gluing of the offcuts together. If you want a tree where the height is 15", and the base is 7 1/4", then that makes each of the sides of the tree 15 7/16" long, because... math. If you align one of those tree sides along the edge of the board, that makes the angle of the base of the tree about 13.5 degrees (13.586) away from a right angle cut across the board. So, if you set your miter saw to 14 degrees (close enough), make the first miter cut through the corner and across the board to cut off the first sliver and get a clean end, then use that same angle without flipping the board and miter cut each successive 15 7/16" piece thereafter, then split each of these 'two-tree' chunks diagonally in half using the sled as shown (except now it's only one cut, down the middle corner to corner), you'll get 12 15" trees from a 1x8x96 board, using the smallest number of cuts (13), and with very little waste (just the two small ends of the board). To check those angles and sizes, or if you want to do a different size with no math, cut the first tree as shown, then lay its side along the edge of the board with its base at the end and strike a line along its base, to find the angle to miter cut across the board.
@cedarriverwoodworking
@cedarriverwoodworking 8 ай бұрын
I will give that a try next time I build them. Thank you for taking the time to write out that whole explanation.
@billparrish4385

@@cedarriverwoodworking My pleasure. And it does occur to me that a 7.25 base will only go edge to edge across a 7.25 board with a right angle. Tipping it over 14 degrees will make it fall somewhat shy of the other edge. But it still should fall within a fudge factor of about the width of the saw blade's kerf, when you split the chunk down the middle to make the two trees. It might take a small bit of fiddling the first time to get it precise. But then again it's an item of decor and not machining watch parts.... :) Thanks again for the idea, and the well-presented video!

If you drill the holes for the bulbs. [center of hole is on the outside edge of the tree ] this means the top of the bulb is out side the tree .you said you used a 3'' hole saw , move the mark up a 1 1/2 '' and move the mark in a1/4'' or so then square a line up from the bottem then mark your hole 7''' down .Your hole center is moved in a bit . now your bulb will hang in the center.
