Follow Up Video: • Quick and Easy Retaini...
There are many materials that can be used to build a retaining wall. I chose the cheaper route by using 2x10 and 2x6 ground contact treated pine. I left off a few steps that I didn't feel were necessary for this build. I did not included a drain pipe behind my wall and I did not use cement to fill the holes for my support posts. Please let me know if you have any questions about the build.

I've been wanting to comment on your video for the past year. Now is the most appropriate time. Its the best design I've seen. And the most professional. You're too modest on its simplicity, technical application, and sophistication without taking credit where its rightfully due. It's the best non-bearing aesthetically-pleasing wall on You Tube. I will use your design for my current retaining wall project. I've scrapped my own design for yours since its beautiful and simple yet cost-effective. Thank you for sharing your ingenuity and talents with the world.

You are a life saver !!! As a single woman with a huge back yard and not a lot of money. I’m going to follow along making a few adjusts; like preserving the wood with “forever” wood. You mentioned 30 yrs, but you give it 10 and I agree, I’m thinking maybe the forever wood paint would extend the longevity. Will send you a pic in the fall!

Fabulous idea and low cost. Great job too. I might even copy what you did on the one I'm building. The only improvements you could do is you can spread roofing tar on the back and bottoms of the wood and stain the front too if u want. I do that on the part of fenceposts in the ground. They last forever that way.
@TightWadDIY
@TightWadDIY 5 жыл бұрын
Ed Cardinal Roofing tar sounds like a great idea. Most stains recommend a 6-12 month drying time for new treated wood. I am at about the 8 month mark and plan to stain soon.

I have a retaining wall built with ground contact 2x12 that is 18 years old. No sign of rot anywhere. We put gravel behind the wall when we built it, and drilled some weep holes in the bottom. I expect to get another 10 years, or longer out of it. Seems the key is drainage. Good job.

I hear ya when it comes to cost of materials with a limited budget. I'm also doing something very similar to your project. Using 2x8x8 for both support and wall. Only difference, as you've mentioned you didn't do, is that I'll be using some bags of quickrete that I have in the shed. Sort of a switch-a-roo with your gravel, I have lots of concrete, just no gravel. Also considering purchasing perforated landscaping drain pipes, just not sure if I need them for a wall that's about 1.5 feet high. Overall, I have to say it looks great and you did a great job putting it together.

Thanks, I didn’t know there was such a thing as ground contact lumber (i saw a long time ago that pressure-treated failed). I think maybe a layer of plastic sheet might preserve the lumber longer.
@TightWadDIY
@TightWadDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Stephen Powdexter Ground contact is rated to last almost twice as long. It will still fail over time. Plastic will trap moisture against the wood and speed up rotting. Landscape fabric and gravel is the recommended material because it will aide drainage and allow it to dry.

Once again, I really appreciate your explanation. As a very "rough" weekend carpenter/landscaper, I needed good visuals and a breakdown of each step which was provided in "laymans" terms. Maybe a reminder that a fence post hole digger will save on time and your back? Once last question, if my wall is 20 feet long, and I have 2 posts (2x6 and 2 x8 together) at each end, do I only have to bury the posts on each end of the 10 foot (2 x10x10) which means a total of 3 buried -16 inches deep for the 2 x 10's as well as support boards on the outside, or do I need additional holes for support? Thanks, Unclebuck

Hey question. if instead of fixed soil that's being retained, do you suppose a free standing (rooted like yours of course) can support just gravel ? Essentially building gravel a car pad , with the walls (retainers) built like yours?.. thoughts?.. size would be prolly 12-15 ft long and possibly 7-8 ft wide.. 🤷🏻‍♂️.. what cha think?.. possible? Or will the weight of the gravel and the car blow out the sides?

Khun Lein I didn’t use drain pipe on this once since there isn’t a lot of water coming through this area. I used fabric and rock behind the wall instead.

I noticed you attached the boards to the posts with screws from the front. What are the pros/cons of doing it this way versus screwing them from the backside?
@TightWadDIY
@TightWadDIY 5 жыл бұрын
Dave B I think the only con to screwing them from the front would be that the screws will show. The pro is the ease of install. I didn’t have enough clearance on the back side to screw them in from the rear.

This is a beautiful project. How did you cut the vertical supports? Did you cut them to exact size before placing or can you also trim after they are in place?
@TightWadDIY
@TightWadDIY 6 жыл бұрын
Bernice Goll The vertical supports that are buried a couple of feet in the ground were all cut the same length then leveled by adding and removing dirt in the whole. The vertical supports between those posts were cut to length by measuring then ensuring they were flush with the top of the wall. The bottom inch or so is covered with dirt so it doesn’t matter if it’s perfect.

How is it still standing at current stage? Does it wobble since you only used gravel? I’ve seen people used cement for each post. Great job I want to do something similar. Let me know about the post thanks!
@TightWadDIY
@TightWadDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Mark Toledo it’s still as good as new. I actually posted a follow up video a couple of months ago. The link is in the description and the pinned comment. Gravel is a better option than cement because the cement traps moisture and rots the wood over time.

Great Job. Planning similar retaining wall. How long was the screw drilled to the 2x4 and 2x10? and Did you also screw the two 2x10 which is stacked vertically?
@TightWadDIY
@TightWadDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Mithun Anantharajappa I used 2.5” coated deck screws for everything. I didn’t screw the 2x10s to each other but I screwed them into the vertical supports. Ideally you would screw them from the back side but I didn’t have enough clearance to fit the drill behind them.

I’m looking at doing the same thing yours turned out very nice. You really should of tied the wall into the earth in a couple of locations it would really help keep it from pushing out. Great video though short to the point and good results.

Andrew Presley Thank you. I agree that tying it into the earth would be a better long term solution but the wall is so short I don’t think it will be an issue.

2 feet - 30 inches at the most,- almost identical to your video, when you use stone to fill the holes for the posts (2x6 and 2 x4) corners , do I also need to use cement to help strengthen the supports? Thanks again
@TightWadDIY
@TightWadDIY 4 жыл бұрын
Craig Buckland I buried my posts about 18” deep. I used gravel instead of cement because cement traps moisture and speeds up rot. You will find about 50/50 suggesting cement vs gravel if you look around online.
