My god buddy....in all my 54 years or well, since the internet and you tube, I have never seen such a perfectly detailed with complete how to breakdown of any sort that even comes close to this level. The way you did this should be THE example of any and all how to demonstrations of any sort. I want to personally thank you for helping me out with some ideas and it looks like you've helped many others with their project as well. Absolutely first class. Also, beautiful cats!

Finally, someone takes the time to take us through the actual catio design and build process. I really appreciate seeing some of my ideas take form and others answered, as I am still planning our rather large catio space and tunnel that will creep around the back of our sccreened porch to connect the two together. Awesome!

I have watched this video many times, learning many things each time. As an “older” (LOL) lady, I’m not sure how much of it I can accomplish single-handedly, but a major part I will incorporate into my next build will be those corner supports. The catio I built years ago was built from 1X2s, with only metal L-brackets for corner supports…and though it’s only about 4 ft square and built on a platform that is level with the window the cats enter it by, they spend a lot of time out there. I am hoping to build something MORE like you have built, but I’ll be happy with it as long as it’s secure and the cats like it, even though I’m sure it won’t look as professionally made as yours. It’s evident that I’ll have to “man up” to2X4s (no way 1X2s will work for a larger build. But, another thing I learned from your build is this…I will use the chicken wire instead of hardware cloth that just about did me in on the last one I built. You’ve inspired me to try and I’m with ya’ on the star head screws! I’ve been using them exclusively for a couple of years and If I never have to see another Phillips head screw, my amateur woodworking life will be a dream comparatively! Thank you for sharing your build. You’re an inspiration!

Thanks you for such a nice comment! This was my first project like this and it was quite intimidating to start but just tackle the challenges along the way and I bet you'll do fine! It definitely helps to have another set of hands if you are doing corner posts in concrete but I found a copious use of clamps and scrap wood can replace an absent 2nd set of hands most of the time. I use those corner supports for everything now and have built about 16 separate workbenches out of them, the oldest is some 15 years old and holding a benchtop lathe and still doing great definitely can't recommend those and the star drive GRK screws enough. Good luck on your build!

Great job, very detailed and informative video! These are the best step by step instructions for a DIY catio build I've seen and I plan on watching it several more times before we start our catio(s). It's going to make it easier for me to figure out the cost now that I know what materials to buy. We're building a 4x12 on one side of the house for our boys, and if it turns out well, we'll probably build another one on the other side for the girls. We're also thinking about enclosing our patio and eventually connecting all three for all of them to enjoy. We have a huge back yard so I have all sorts of great ideas running through my head.. but I'll have to wait for lumber prices to drop before I start making those plans! Thanks, you took the stress out of figuring this out 👍👍

My dad has been collecting rejected lumber from new-build housing areas per their permission off their discard pile. Not all are useable, but we can save a little by salvaging some 2x4s, etc. They can be cut where they are twisted or whatever & the rest is usable wood. Great for braces & such.

I absolutely love this. We have two kitties just over a year old but we still call them kittens. Last summer they were so tiny and the fences are high around our garden so we had no issue giving them access for a little while. That gave them a taste of the great outdoors and we HAVE to build them a catio. We lost one young cat to the road a few years back and never again. We all need fresh air for our mental and physical health and I'm sure it's no different for cats. This video has been invaluable. We only have two walls to build as we'll be building out from the back of the house and across to the shed so they'll have a little bit of garden as well. Should work out about 10 feet by 12 feet roughly so TONS of room. It's the cost of wood now at the minute that holds me back. Living on a reduced rate pension so a lot of saving to be done and a daughter to put through college too. I think I need to win the lottery!!

Try finding what they call "culled" lumber at local lumber yards - we snagged treated wood last summer at 10 cents on the dollar! Some curvy stuff but most looked FINE! Also, some people have old wooden structures they want torn down - they'll give u the lumber for tearing it down - got old Pergola painted/peeling looks AWFUL, that's how I'll get rid of it.

Very good video! Well explained and clear. I would only make one change - instead of as slide bolt I would put a latch that could hold a lock. Then I could get in/out but a malicious person would not have access to my cats or my house.

This looks so nice! I’m pretty determined to make one and I’m planning to use yours as my main inspiration…then basically completely changing it 😅. I’m renting so I need to make it free standing but I LOVE the modular wall idea, especially if/when I move! I happened to end up with a lot of free chain link fence so also trying to decide how to use that because I need to save some money if I can! It also seems a little more protective if a predator comes sniffing around. I’m thinking I’ll use it for the bottom half of each wall…lots of ideas, not as confident in my skills. Thank you again for such a thorough video with the amazing idea for those modular walls!

Just throwing this out there as a comment. Think constructive criticism... the chemicals in pressure treated lumber are super dangerous if consumed (chewing, cleaning paws, splinters consumed, etc.) and they very easily cause previously dormant skin conditions to arise. That being said, very well made, and i really appreciate your outline for this.
@matus1976
@matus1976 Жыл бұрын
That's a fair comment, or at least something that should be considered. Doing some quick research, it seems the obviously bad stuff was phased out in the early 2000's, and modern pressure treated lumber is much better. how much? *shrug* I guess we need to balance the unknown threat with the practical usefulness of the lumber. Definitely advise everyone to make that decision on their own with plenty of research. I've read a bunch of Bruce Ames' stuff, the guy who invented to HERP index which most of our current carcinogenicity assessments are based on, there's definitely reason to be skeptical of some of the claims of how toxic things are as they utilize massive doses and assume the no linear threshold model, but definitely some things are legitimately very toxic and we need to be careful.

It says specifically on Simpson's website you should use Strong-Drive SD connector Screw for the Simpson strong tie bracket. Pan head screws do not have the sear strength necessary for that support.
@matus1976
@matus1976 2 ай бұрын
That's a good point. I'd suspect that recommendation is so the screws can meet the load requirements of the max load the brackets are rated for, but in this build we're not hitting anywhere near that load and the screws can handle the load of this structure just fine, but it wouldn't hurt to use the larger tougher screws.

Thanks for watching, glad you found the video useful! If you were building onto an existing concrete patio, you can use something like post bases, these are metal brackets that enable bolting 4x4 lumber to an existing concrete base with expansion anchor bolts. I'd definitely recommend fixing it to the concrete, a strong windstorm could life up the whole catio and throw it around without being solidly secured to the ground.

Did you leave the floor bare earth? Why didn't you cover the shelves in carpet? The catio looks very nice. ❤️🐈‍⬛🐈🐈‍⬛❤️

Thanks!! We added some grass later, and we did end up covering some of the shelves in carpet, but they also love rolling around on that rougher wood surface as it seems like it helps groom them.

What CAD software are you using?
@matus1976
@matus1976 Жыл бұрын
I used Newtek's Lightwave modeler, it's more of a 3d animation software but can be used for modeling like this too, but it's definitely not ideal.

IF making this and planning to paint it white...would you paint it first then assemble? or assemble then paint?
@matus1976
@matus1976 10 ай бұрын
I would probably paint it first, it's too time consuming preventing paint from going in the wrong places, like covering your wire mesh or overlapping those corner brackets. Much easier when everything is apart to paint it. I would also give a quick layer to the *joints* after assembling though, that will do alot to seal up cracks and crevices in the joints.

Any idea what your total cost for your build?
@matus1976
@matus1976 3 ай бұрын
This was pre-pandemic, and iirc materials cost about $1200 USD. I'd expect at least 50% more than that today though. The lumber and the corner brackets are the biggest expenses, so it doesn't take to long to price it out if you are thinking of building one.

I made a catio more or less the same as yours only I Used see through corrugated roofing so the cats can see what’s fling or settling on top of it, it’s not in a permanently sunny spot only from 10. 30 am to 2. 30 pm in summer so they pick and chose when they want sun or a shaded spot to sit in though they do not use it much in mid winter only for short periods as it gets very cold where I live. Cats know what they want and have beds out there they swap places in. One cat does not like winter and only goes out for a half hour or so at noon and night times, my other cat who is 17 this year was an outdoor cat when young, he’s out there more at night in any weather, though less in mid winter, thanks I’m so happy I found your video as most do not give enough detail and yours was a perfecto catio the cats and myself love it I’m thinking of extending it further round the garden from wher it as and making one area higher so they can see what’s over the fence trellis and through the trees. I’m sure they will love it as one spot gets sun most all day, to keep the younger one happy. I will follow your other videos as I’ve been making this Catio, and finished about 6 months ago, so bust but her I am commenting and subscribed to your video. Many thanks I love a great workman woman, cannot do with bodger’s. 😻😺edit 15 months ago I built this not Five cheers.

Oh nice, I wish I has used transparent roofing now, I'm sure they enjoy the extra sun and light and visibility, but really depends on how hot the area is. I'm kind of on the borderline where that may be too hot. I'm glad you liked the video and thanks for the subscription!

Hey there. I know this video is about a year old, but roughly how much do you think this cost you? Because I would like to somethings super similar and I’m just trying to figure out what the cost would be !!
@matus1976
@matus1976 11 ай бұрын
I built this back in ... 2019 I think? Back then it cost about 1200 USD, I'd say today with post pandemic prices it'll be more like 1600 - 2000. You can get a good idea just by pricing out the 2x4s and 4x4s as they are most of the cost.
