We finally get started forming and building our ICF foundation stacking foxblocks for the stem wall. We also try to find Von a Caribou and have some fun going up river with our jet boat until something not so good happens.

I know you are well past this stage now but wow about the details on hiring someone to get it done. Way to pivot and make I work.

It was definitely the best decision for us and I’m so glad we hired it out. Now that we’re at the stage we’re at, the fox block foundation has worked out amazingly.😁

I realize this was a while ago now when you did this. But i'm paying $220/yd for local readymix now post-covid in a well-populated area with 4 companies competing. Pre-covid i was paying 135/yd. We planned and budgeted pre-covid, and are fully aware of the sting unexpected price adjustments can bring. Luckily around us, concrete guys make money doing JUST concrete, so i saved on the labor.

Pretty exciting. I hope the weather & concrete crew cooperate so you can get this finished before the snow flies.

Hope your winter doesn't get there too soon....and you get the concrete poured. That was a terrible price to pay for just the forms and the concrete, but I guess when you're in Alaska everything cost so much more. And remote is even more than that. Good luck, hope there will be another caribou in the freezer by the next video. Have a Blessed day.

Termination dust as we call it is already hitting the tops of the mountains. I’m hoping for a moose in the freezer next but I would settle for another caribou.😁

Put the sub floor down and staple down 6mil plastic or a giant tarp 2 keep the snow off until spring

Not worth the risk and with the price of lumber now, it just makes sense to wait.

Probably revealed on a later video. :-) apologies.... What about ground water seepage into basement space? Do (did) you put a sump in and pump or is that OK and not a problem in Tote with the permafrost?
@wildwoodoffgridalaska
@wildwoodoffgridalaska 9 ай бұрын
The Tok area does not have permafrost because our ground here is all gravel and very well drained. No sump required for the same reason. Our well is under our house and gravel goes down 140ft where we finally hit ground water.

@@wildwoodoffgridalaska Makes sense. I'm planning a bore (well) here too, Think I'm gonna hit water at about 30 Meters and drill to about 65. Water quality will be crappy due to no gravel, high iron and salinity levels. OK for veggies and yard though. I was born in south Africa and we hit pristine waster at 120 Meters.

Curious about the well being placed in the crawlspace/basement... does the advantages of not having to use a pitless adapter and being able to work on it regardless of weather, outweigh any potential future need to rehabilitate the well?
@wildwoodoffgridalaska
@wildwoodoffgridalaska Жыл бұрын
With the extreme climate that we live in, I’d say yes. Too many people have problems with freezing water lines and the overwhelmingly recommendations from those that have lived here for decades is to put the well in Nader your house. The other option is to building a well house over the well and bury the water lines 10ft with insulated lines. It’s a challenge either way.

Thanks for your thoughts on that. We've purchased some acreage on the Kenai Peninsula and will begin our building project starting this summer... I think your frost depth is something like 100 inches there in Tok, whereas on the KP 42 inches is the norm... Tok's a great town, have really enjoyed staying there on our way in and out of AK... Keep up the good work...

Do you have permafrost in your area
@wildwoodoffgridalaska
@wildwoodoffgridalaska 3 жыл бұрын
No, the ground in Tok is so well drained due to the excessive amount of gravel, we don’t have to worry about permafrost. I’m very thankful for that.

@@wildwoodoffgridalaska I moved away from Eagle River back in 2015 and moved my family into our small Log home. And I am now roughing in the 40x32 addition I put out a hand full of videos. Currently I am putting the roof on the upstairs dormer. Feel free to check out my channel if you like. I watched a few of your videos and I think that you are making a wise choice on moving to Tok its been a few years since I have visited. But you can't beat the small town feeling. Best of luck and God bless.

What keeps concrete from oozing out the bottom of fox blocks?
@wildwoodoffgridalaska
@wildwoodoffgridalaska 3 жыл бұрын
You generally pour the footer first then pour the stem wall once the footer cures. We had to make sure our concrete mix was the right consistency so we didn’t have a bunch of waste.
