I purchased my 1976 Chevy stepside right after I got hired as a mechanic in a mill I worked in. In 1976 off road trucks were far and few in between. People were putting blocks under the axle to raise up the truck. I wasn’t sold, my dad suggested having the front and rear leaf packs re-arched. There was a blacksmith shop that would occasionally do them. I added 3” in the front and 4” in the rear. Once I did it with in a year he was only doing spring work. He also would make headache racks for the trucks in the oil field I had him build a “mushroom bar with a lay down spare tire much like yours. Great build on this truck!

And I would have an LED lightbar instead of the individual lights. The roll bar would also be a headache rack. I know that what you did is what the customer wants and it is cool. Great work, always fun to watch street guys build offroaders, totally different approach. Would love to see some gusseting on those tire mount studs, if that truck gets gnarly offroad the weight and momentum of the tire will wreak havoc on the mounts, and wreck the mounts (see what i did there...)

I just found out about you guys, so I'm catching up. Cool episode, and nice truck. If you had put the main hoop through the bed floor like the rear kickers, (or plated above and below the bed floor and connected to the frame to make it removable) it would be a more roll bar than light bar.
@jesseison-bowman3964
@jesseison-bowman3964 Жыл бұрын
Worked your ass off on the roll bar with great attention to detail but as an off roader I do have some constructive feedback. And I really hate to say anything but since you haven't painted it yet.....if, God forbid, he should actually roll the truck, the bed can crush so the main hoop should also have 5th and 6th point connections that 90 straight down to the frame. And don't weld the tubing directly to the frame. There is an aftermarket 2 piece fitting. One piece welds to the frame, the other piece welds into the end of your tubing and they mate together, making the entire roll bar assembly removable. Also the spare tire mount is directly in line of sight when the truck is in reverse which would be very annoying. On the other hand, none of this matters if he isn't going to actually take it off road lol. Thank you for the great videos and hard work. I am seeing some very negative comments so I don't want to sound like a jerk. Just some thoughts from looking at the truck as if I was about to take it down a tough trail. Oh and go ahead and upgrade to a Warn winch. The LT swap, ORD coil overs, bead locks, and axles are all awesome. I especially like the ORD coiliver set up. Thank you

There has to be a better way to make the oval cuts on the ends of tubing before welding. Using a hole saw, especially in a pistol drill, isn't the greatest situation. I've seen that done using a small belt sander laid horizontally with a table set up so the end of the tube leads into what is normally the top of the belt sander. The table can be adjustable for different angles.

Looks good but gonna be a pain n the ass to get that big wheel on and off that rack. Woulda been easier to put it on a hinge so it'll be easier to line up and on that light bar need to run some of the front cab hoop down to the frame otherwise it's just gonna twist n crack on the trails and mess the bed sides up as well

Did you consider running your brake line down the trailing arm where the travel is nearly constant and the range of motion is lesser being nearer the fulcrum instead of at the apex where travel is greatest and the likelihood of damaging the soft line is greatest?😁
@georgecerda7802
@georgecerda7802 Жыл бұрын
To do so would require two flexible lines (one on each end) and fasteners/joints. It is a good point, but perhaps keeping close the OEM design is what they had in mind. I ran the electric cables for the electronic brake calipers on the upper links on my truck.

I don’t think your light bar is going to work out! The front is mounted to the bed, but the back is mounted to the frame! If you’re not going to mount the bed solidly to the frame, but use body bushings, it’s going to crack!!! Either mount it all to the frame, or mounted to the bed! This is fabrication 101! 😂😂😂

From what I know, and I could be wrong, but long beds never came with a 16gal tank. They were always dual 20s. With that new engine in, it needs all the fuel it can carry. You have cut the range of this truck down to less that 200 mile per tank. Given if it gets 10MPG. Why only one tank and a 16 gallon at that? I really like how you have converted the leaf springs to coil. Mine drives like a dream this way.

Hello. I been following your builds and I have to say that I really like the work you put on those vehicles, but I have to disagree (friendly) about the rollbar on this truck. It's not a good idea to have a part of the tubes welded to the frame and the other part bolted to the bed because thos will flex in different ways, and the part that support the spare tire needs more reinforcement, in my opinion. Please, I don't want to criticize your work, is just a friendly advice. Thanks for share those great works on your chanel. Greetings from Spain.
@SalvagetoSavage
@SalvagetoSavage Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback! If it was a full roll cage going through the cab and up to the front we'd agree with you. But the bed is going to be pretty solidly mounted to the frame. The bed will roll generally at the same pitch as the frame it's mounted on. At most it may flex the side of the bed slightly, but nothing to the extent that it would crack or break anything! Thanks for watching and thanks for commenting!

Love the S2S vlogs! Question about the rear bar mounts: why weld them to frame instead of bolt-in so you can remove the bed?
@davidjpaddock
@davidjpaddock Жыл бұрын
The bed is lightweight sheet metal, and would rip through if the truck was upside down, collapsing the roll bar and providing no protection. With large enough plates it could be done, but welding to the frame is stronger, passes more standards used by offroad sanctioning bodies and provides more protection to the passengers. Plus, welding a plate to a corregagated bed floor is very very hard to do properly. Would be easier to just cut the diwnbars and reweld if it has to come off in the future
@Mr_Ruhl
@Mr_Ruhl Жыл бұрын
@@davidjpaddock yeah, but the front is just bolted to the bed sides. I'm pretty sure those 2 bars welded in there would just bend collapsing the bed sides and would push the bar into the cab.

@timothyduhon1106
@timothyduhon1106 Жыл бұрын
With this being a high pressure direct injection engine, the regulator can only be used for the low side fuel system. The High Pressure pump exceeds 2000 PSI. On a Low pressure(Port Injection) fuel system it is best to put the regulator after the rails to provide consistent fuel pressure in the rails.

The rubber of the tire is the only rear part of the mount that's touching. The rim is held on by the pressure of the rubber on the bars and the where is bolted down on the studs we created. That tire carrier\light mount\wanna be roll bar monstrosity is terrible looking! The bars should be thicker for strength and aesthetics. The tire mounts way too far up and away from the cab just blocking your view and looking out of place. Then half of it is bolted to the bed sides while the other is welded directly to the frame?!? This is some highschool shop class stuff right here. The frame should have mounts for the front and back and the bar should bolt to those through the bed floor.
