BUILDING AN UNDERGROUND RAIN WATER (From the Roof) CATCHMENT TANK | Start to Finish

This Cistern was great fun to build. Not the most conventional way of doing it, but it’s my way. First time for me so I was able to work it out and go with the flow. As long as it works, I’m happy. And if it does work, I’ll be building a larger tank fully below ground next to it.
This start to finish was made partly from previous episodes and the last half is new.

Here are a couple of tips for when you build your bigger tank later on. :) When I lived in Haiti and had a cistern under my house to hold water, I learned that the best cisterns had a couple of features. 1) a small, lower area where the pump can go, this way you can get the most of your water out of the tank. (When you have a foot of water in the tank but the pump can't suck it out, it's useless.) 2) Have the bottom of the the tank slope either outwards or inwards. This way sediment will settle to one area and make clean-out easier. Your tank looks great!! Good work. :D

The other very useful addition is a length of flexible hose on the pump intake, with a float tied to the other end of the hose so that the end of the hose hangs a few inches below the water surface. This is the cleanest water in the tank - you avoid any floating debris, but you're as far away as possible from silt and sediment slowly sinking to the bottom. As the water level drops, the float keeps the end of the hose on station just below the surface. When you get to that last bit of the water, it's probably a good idea to use that for watering plants and find something else for humans and animals to drink. All the sludge you've been avoiding drinking has settled either onto the main floor of the tank or into the sump, and if you can it's actually worth washing it out from time to time.

Great job! You can calculate how much rainwater you get from your by multiplying the average rainfall in (mm) x the area of the roof (m2). Quick Google search says ave rainfall in Algarve in 500mm. If your roof is say 130m2, then you should get 500 x 130 = 65,000 litres! Make sure you have a good overflow on the tank. Always love your videos - much more interesting to diy! Cheers to you from Australia, we have water tanks everywhere! Lol! Hugs to Will & Cris😊

I cant believe how little faith I had in you on this particular project - I was fairly sure this was going to be a struggle/disaster. So glad to be proven very very wrong. What a massive asset to your property for a fairly minor investment (and some sweat equity). You absolutely nailed it mate.

I will say if you make another tank, have a think about making up a few concrete forms in the shape of an arc, include a 'mortice and tenon' on each end. It could save a lot of material moving. Then rig up a simple pulley to get stuff in the hole. Nice bit of handywork so far.

You are so eloquent and come across so well on camera . we live in Spain Andalusia/murcia and are desperate for rainfall, I have a Stevensons shelter and recorded only 35.1 mm of rain in 2 years ,the last meaningful rain was in September 2019 during Gota Fria .take care and keep the vids up

Lovely result. If i can offer some suggestions for a bigger tank... If you build it next to the house you could continue the block work up above ground and just drop your gutter into it. That would give you a lot more capacity. With regard to rendering inside the tank. You can spray cement really quickly when rendering and the guns are remarkably cheap. Something to explore. The house i live in has a 30000 litre tank sunk into the front garden. It was badly built in that the builder didn't take into account the weight of the water. About 30 metric tons. So the bottom slab broke off when it filled and the tank is now useless. You might want to consider that when sizing the slab for your next one...

Andrew this looks amazing! What a beautiful watertank! It looked like you made a giant perefectly round cake with terracotta frosting haha. I really enjoy seeing the precision and the care while doing such heavy work, like smoothing the surface of the concrete etc. It also showed this time how much experience you got from building the well. At least to me it seemed more effortless this time around.

Had you thought of adding a few more courses of block to where you were three feet above the surface for added water and incorporating that as a deck for your gazebo that you were thinking of? The access hatch could be through the floor of the gazebo while the structure would keep dirt and animals from ending up in the water. That would make the concrete "slab" invisible, give you an area for shade and contemplation and look quite good depending on the design of the gazebo? You could also do your stone paving around the gazebo as well. It would bring all the practical and esthetics of your various ideas together.
