Andrew is having a blast, and having a great go at a large tile project. But as a true builder, the amount of learning Andy needs for "Workmanship Quality" and efficiency with time, material, and at points, health, causes me to really appreciate, having done years of this work, what it takes. So for those taking on these "Large Jobs" working for yourself "figuring it out as you go" - a few of things most professionals have learned, like Andy, often doing it the "Hard Way". A very first suggestion, is to PAY a professional for a half day of telling you how a task is really done. In the case being shared here by our brave journeyer, he would have already saved thousands on the tile aspect alone. Nor would he have potentially harmed his health, as he nearly has. Heat Exhaustion, (Days on hot roofs, never truly acclimated to this work, easily causes problems ranging from heat exhaustion to heat stroke). The little known part is you carry heat exhaustion episodes with you, lowering the amount of heat you can tolerate each time as it occurs. Unless you can get the job done in a couple of hard days (youthful!!!), it is wiser and safer to rig a movable canopy tent to keep workers in the shade, with plenty of drinking and cooling water arranged as part of the "Large Job". And working alone, in the heat? Good grief. I hope family was checking in on you at least Andrew. There's a point to this criticism with love to Andrew. I can tell he and I are likely related. There is a striking amount of similarities between of both. Building PartsCaster Guitar kits, aspiring to be a filmmaker, and riding KTR's and doing everything are own way, "thanks but I'm 'sorted'" personalities. My speaking out is to honor MY trade, one that I payed with blood sweat and tear, and one that involves human health and basic safety. Not only for Andrew sake, but the three year old child that moved in 25 years from now. Every bit of our work, on people's homes deserves Workmanship Quality. Andrew, please my Brother, allow yourself as example of what has stood out to me, and how I would probably approach your roof job as a pro? I'm asking after watching all of your, and Christina's channels, and know how clear you always have been about "This is NOT building advice in anyway, only a Journey" that you chose to share with everyone. Which is a very awesome thing, Andy. May our paths pass one day. Now some DIY advice, and gentle warnings: Get roof insured. What will you do, if two years from now, after the normal settling and cracks are reappearing, everywhere ... (House has no foundation, and will move, always). I commented about this once the local builder had quit. There are waterproof mats that can be installed under mortared exterior tile. The mesh material used here - will let water right thru. People, please do wear decent footwear. Andy on the extension ladder in Crocs. Even if Teva's. The shoes slip on ladders. Concrete chunks fall on bare toes. Sorry, but safe shoes, boots are just like eye protection and lung protection. Safety is also "Workmanlike". And pro's do not spend half a day trying to 'drill' a rock out. You break them out with a breaker bar, 5 minutes. Do you have a current tetanus shot??? Need to have that done as well. And best to only use White Portland Cement when doing white grout. Why they sell it. Which should not require carefully scraping the white mortar before grouting with a darker color. The standard grey thinset was likely back in stock by the time it was actually needed! At the same time ... carpenters/tile setters/plumbers keep their tools organized. You don't use a box cutter knife for scraping grout, you use a stiff scraper, which is a tool belt item while laying tile. As soon as you need the sharp knife to open those grout bags, you'll find knife as useless. At least get to know how to care for tools, including keeping needed tools always close to hand while working. Summing up briefly here, is with the laying of the tiles. Andy's layout beginning is fine, without needing math, a cross will get the dry tiles equally centered between opposing walls. But 2+ weeks to complete this? I'd bid job as 5 days, with a helper for 2. Lay them from the box straight into mortar. What, were you going to send them back if the color was off? You set tiles into much thinner mortar. You test for proper adhesion by lifting tile off the mortar and making sure 60-70% of backside is covered. You DO NOT level each tile, one by one! The time spent on one tile here with levels, was easily a 4' square area laid evenly by a pro using a block of wood. I would factor in me and a youngster the first day, and one more day by myself to finish the main field. Some contractors would grout as they lay each 4' square, which is even quicker. Other wise I would then take a day to cut and lay the edge tiles with the helper, and the remaining 2 days doing grout and cleaning up. All that is especially true if I'm working on my own properties. Set your schedule, get it all organized, and get it done. Correctly. Watching Andy's beautiful projects, I would point out again, it is possible to do a decent job as a novice. But it seems to me, crucial that the potential DIYer consider paying for a bit of professional oversight before attempting certain Large Jobs. May the lords of the mineral kingdom smile upon your hard work Andy, and may the roofing gods grant your roof longevity and years of comfortable Algarve joy! The tiles, and your devoted work certainly looks stunning. Let's do it with Workmanship - balancing Form and Function, the true Builder's Oath.

I'm sure you're very proud of your work, you should be, you did a great job on the tiling the roof. You are very particular and in the end it is worth it. I can see from your other projects that you are just as particular in all parts of your renos. I've done inside tiling in the basement of my second house and being just as particular as you it turned out fantastic. It's worth while taking your time to do it correctly, I couldn't imagine doing it over to make it perfect. Also I did outside inter-locking stone driveway and walkway which again took quite a while but in the end I got tons of complements. Take your time, you're retired aren't you! I'm an artist and when I work on something and I'm not 100% sure or happy I step away from it and give some time to think it through. enuf said, cheers!
