The Off Grid Experience

6 ай бұрын

Was able to take advantage of nice weather the past few weekends and get the bridge 90% done. Started laying the decking after getting the bracing secured. Still need to add a few lag bolts.
I also tried sharpening one of my axes with a file for the first time .

We had a similar situation across the creek. A small section, the a longer section where it was a boulder that we couldn't get through. My grandpa told my pop and uncle's, take half the distance of the long span, take a 6x6 and run it from underneath to the support roughly 6-12 inches above the ground, lag it in and it would prevent replacing and or sagging. It was so strong we were able and still can get the tractor up to the hunting cabin to this day after 40+ years. Just advice, and it looks amazing! Keep up the great craftsmanship!

Great video I just have one question on the bridge build is there a reason that you didnt install bank seat beams on the ends? when ever I have done bridges I like to put a good bank seat in . either wood or I did one with concrete that was a pain , building forms etc, . there may be a good reason that im not aware of here so just asking, the cabin looks great by the way.
@TheOffGridExperience
@TheOffGridExperience 6 ай бұрын
Not really sure what bank seat beams are. The corners have rocks underneath for support. Followed same design as my other bridge and it's held up fine. Thanks for watching 👍
@davebloggs
@davebloggs 6 ай бұрын
@@TheOffGridExperience A bank seat is like an abutment, I have used 6x6 or 8x8 beams dug into the banks about 2 foot wider than the bridge 1 foot each side this gives a great surface to sit the bridge on.
@TheOffGridExperience
@TheOffGridExperience 6 ай бұрын
@davebloggs ok, yes. Makes sense. I used some stones from the creek to sit the bridge on. We'll see how it works. I may have to use the seat method if it doesn't hold. Thanks 👍
@snowbw
@snowbw 6 ай бұрын
I think the concern here is the bridge is well built for vertical loads (crossing) but without the ends being anchored in an abutment or even just the ground you potentially could have problems with lateral loads torquing against your span supports.* *Disclaimer: I'm totally not an engineer.
@davebloggs
@davebloggs 6 ай бұрын
@@snowbw You are correct, the end load carrying is being supported on mud and the contact area is very small for distribution , within reason you want a high amount of contact area to spread the loads on a bridge, the static loads here are quite small but over time on mud the bridge will tent to warp in the soft surface, since this is just a foot bridge dynamic loading is not really a factor.. the builder has put large rocks under the end corners so that will help for sure and even if it did move slightly it would be a simple repair to re straighten it,

why only one support? not like you lack for trees . and you should have added gussets to the corners and been using nails instead of screws a nail will stretch before it will break unlike screws. and u burned the boards but not where they are touching the earth plus when u burn it you are supposed to go back over it with like motor oil or diesel
