Building Bridges on the Monty

Building of Bridge 85, Schoolhouse Bridge on the Montgomery canal.
The last major obstruction before reaching Wales on the Monty canal. Watch this exclusive footage of the lift from my DJI mini 3 Pro Drone and my 2 Insta360 cameras.
The Monty is a major project on the network with initial aims to get to Welshpool on the current complete sections after the success of rewatering to Crickheath basin.
On this site near to Shrewsbury and Oswestry we take a look at Beaver Bridges lifting the sections in place.

Absolutely amazing video ! The way the bridge arch is formed so it lies flat on the truck then slots into the abutments to make the arch is really interesting. Full marks to the engineer who thought of it.

It makes a lightweight bridge for transportation which is excellent, the width of the local lanes would have meant a full cast bridge would have been impossible

Great video - but, everyone, a big shout of recognition and thanks for the huge amount of volunteer work, and the tireless organisation, grant chasing and publicity carried out by Michael Limbrey. It's not often you come across such a tenacious, quiet and unassuming man, who has achieved so much. To my shame, although I live a couple of miles away, I've never lifted a shovel here - though you will find lots of gates where there used to be stiles on footpaths in the next parish,

A lot of people don’t understand how much work goes on benign the scenes for these things and as you say it’s all volunteer hours, retirees generally who have had a career and continue it for the trusts. Michael Limbrey is a lovely chap who I was lucky enough to meet on the day.

I still can't believe how good that bridge is. Simple to construct and erect. Only a fairly small crane is needed to install it. I hope many more like it get built.

Yes, they actually couldn’t get a full cast bridge down the lanes so had to find an alternative plan. I think they chose something quite brilliant personally!

Thanks for an interesting and informative update on this very impressive bridge restoration project. I guess it must have taken a great deal of planning - and cost a bob or two. Hopefully it won't be long before it's in water and into Wales.

Costs were high because of various conditions from the road, I think they initially planned to have it more volunteer led but the complexity and some good fundraising meant it was contracted out. I’m sure I heard £1mil for the entire project

How will they fill them with water to test it , truck it in, or do they pump it in out of a creek?

This one is connected to the network so they will slowly allow water in, other places they might pump from a river/stream etc. I’ve also known wells to be dug to pump from. It all depends what’s allowed from the environment agency

Very very interesting as usual. I love to follow your work by going on google maps and checking out the area. Since I am in the U.S. I don't know exactly where this is. Monty canal doesn't come up on google maps. Can you give me the closest landmark so I can find it. Thanx again

Google Crickheath wharf that should come up, it’s on the Montgomery canal. That’s where I start the video, then follow where you’ll see RH Lewis next to a road with a crescent track next to it. That’s the bridge site

Fantastic Steve, real gem of a video this one.! So good you were invited to film the day; an historical document, for generations to come. Brilliant shots from the drone as ever. Loved seeing those bridge segments 'fold' into the correct curvature as they're lifted - genius idea.! Any chance of indicating where exactly you're looking/pointing stuff out, alongside narration.? Even overlaying some basic outline shapes - circle, arrow, etc... (a DaVinci Resolve video tutorial here:- kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oLOBiJCDyNKXe2w.html - Maybe your program you use has something similar.?). Still, a great big thumbs up; really appreciate the time/effort involved to put this all together for our enjoyment.!

I’ve been trying to figure out a way I can include a map on drone footage, I used to do an overlay on drone stuff, maybe I should pull that back in until I figure out a way to do it differently

@@CourtAboveTheCut That would be cool, thanks. But more, also about the detail you describe on the spandrels and parapets and suchlike... just a small arrow or circle overlayed, to outline what you mean/where you're looking... 🙂
