Tip from a woodworker turn the 2x4 on their edge. More strength so they won’t sag as much over time and usually less warping too.

I definitely think it would be worth it to rotate those boards to get better strength out of them. So much of that flexing is due to them being turned and only having half the thickness to withstand weight. Especially if you are doing that mountain down the spine and will have a lot of Lego weight eventually on there. It will just keep getting worse. Related, you may want to consider screwing those boards from the other direction so your screws aren't just going into end grain. Since it is not visible you won't have to get fancy with pocket holes or anything. Just things to consider. As you always say, this is a giant project, might as well do it right! Also, I agree on the posts. Gotta keep it consistent! Looks way better.

I would suggest when building trains, to build in the powered up sensors from the start, so you can have them stop at stations. Looking great 👍

You should get one of those wheelie things mechanics use to scoot under the tables! That way you won't have to crawl. If you arranged an under-the-table fully system you could make it even easier to traverse! Just a thought!

I think you should do the frames of those tables out of galvanized square steel and attach them to each other with screws that are borrowed from your aunt. Then just cover it up with eco friendly wood veneers and there you go. Perfect and durable table👍

Yup, this is the headache when you're using dimensional lumber for something that is effectively *furniture*. They're not quite straight and level the way more expensive hardwood would be. But they're so much cheaper that you gotta do it. Just take your time and have a helper to hold things so that you can keep them square and it'll work out. You can always add corner braces to help 'pull' things into place if they're being particularly difficult.

Ultimately, the sheets are what need to be square, not necessarily the framework. The framework needs to be as flat as possible to prevent the sheets from bowing and not lining up. Shim the legs, not the sheets, and add some more legs.

If you put the 2"x4" on edge instead of face (vertical) there will be less bowing. You can also put a piece in the middle spanning between the two sides to help hold it all square too. I would highly recommend doing that along with two more legs on each of the big tables - that will help with all the bowing a lot.

To have an amazing view looking city, I agree you should have a perimeter city and also a center round city with a donut opening in the center. It would look the nicest without all the cutouts with the current layout and all the H shapes.

A tip from those that build model railroad tables - use two boards glued and screwed together in an ‘L’ shape to make a stronger beam.

Plan B perimeter layout sounds better with corridors along the walls for 360 deg city point of view. You can have Islands in the middle that connect to the perimeter by ocean, lakes etc or even bridges, also with boats, yatchs and maybe mountains on islands so it won't be the usual mountains in one corner or the back corner, different from other installations, a great way to incorporate some water vehicles as well. It doesn't need to be symmetrical. Nothing in reality is perfectly symmetrical. The camping ground can be at the foot of the mountain, minifigs will have a great time climbing the mountain or go trekking. Enjoyment of stories happening within the city and beyond would be ace! Instead of crawling under the tables all the time. You should invest in one of those scooters that you sit on and then you can roll around under the tables. You could even transport sets/mocs that way as well!

I’m glad YOU saw and talked about the bowing of the sheets, I immediately saw in in the beginning when you showed the base plate measuring line.

If you know someone with a laser level you could use would make it easy and perfect over all the tables. Would be better than a 48” one

Get the frame all sorted first.. put in all "filler" frame sections cut to the same length (including the sections you plan to leave out) level/shim off using laser and square off measuring diagonals (corner to corner of whole table) Then, top off and fix down to frame using equal spacing to legs on the underside.

Since you've started building your tables and showing the size of the proposed future Lego city, Ive been having dreams of plans of own city layout. My dream layout is still many years away from being a reality, but my dreams are a good substitute for now. Keep up the good work, loving the progress :P

The only way to get perfect lumber is engineered, it cost more but it is straight. They use it a lot in kitchens where cabinets are going.

When you fasten the table top down, it should help flattened out and level them out.

I’m an Edmontonian and yesterday I was out during that rain storm.

On those joining tables id definitely turn the 2x4s over as they will be more solid. They will bow less over time too.

I love how meticulous you are, and have been with everything you have done in your Lego studio. Looks amazing so far. Very inspiring to me as I start work on a much smaller studio that I am building!

I'd put more wood as supports under the sheets. And screw the melamin well on to them, they should straighten.

Maybe you could snake the tables in an S like pattern. That would make one peninsula on one side and two on the other. Possibly making different types of bridges that would be easier to climb under. You could make the "S" parts wide enough that you could reach the middle from each side so you wouldn't have to climb under. Or maybe that's a terrible idea. I don't know but it's worth a thought.

Also, use a baseplate and make a model table layout with Lego! You can visualize the options in 3D

Looking great! Tip for levelling the tables - find out where the highest point is first, and start the levelling process from there. If you can access a construction laser, that will make finding the high point easy. They also have vertical laser lines at perfect right angle which would help getting everything square.

Once you screw the sheets to the beams that will help a lot with rigidity, close up gaps as well.

my OCD agrees with you about the legs, had a similar issues in my little leg room with ikea table top colors white some grey and legs being black and some white

have you ever used a self leveling laser level? idk if it will help with this project but it will give u a level that is up to 100ft long... so when ur adding the pucks, u can see where everything lines up? i use it when im hanging multiple picture frames... so idk if itll help wi the table tops

If you are planning on still doing the crawling under the table you should get something that you can use to help you get to the center fast like a roller so you don’t hurt your self

You should get a wheeled creeper for under the table to get around under the table

Once you connect all the tables together I think it would be a good idea to measure the diagonals before you tighten everything together. Measuring the diagonals is common when you're building a foundation in order to make sure that you get a setup with 90 degree corners. Just measure both diagonals and make sure they are the same length. Small inaccuracies in the angle will cause problem over this large space when you start placing baseplates.

@7:29 I was surprised you did not say “put those melamine inserts in place.”, honestly you should get the tables leveled before connecting all the ”melamine” on top. Love your channel!!!

rent a rotating laser level, set it to desired height and then just shim and block it all up to the laser level. saves having to get a large bubble level....

Not sure how readily available they are in CA, but have a look at ZipBolts/Easibolts. they are used to pull together worktops in kitchens. If you put those between the melamine boards it would pull them all straight and level.

I think the 4x4 timber would be stronger and less inclined to wobble.

Those pieces you are adding in will sag and bow they will be best the other way, I have experienced that in my Lego city table

Only an idea how about you add a ruined building in a corner and have some Minifigs exploring it - could even be multiple buildings

Maaaan! Such a pity it's just a bunch of mini-figs and some Star Wars stuff. All I want is a ton of regular, old-school, random Lego pieces that I can use to make ANYTHING I can imagine. :P

You'd mentioned a different layout. Stick with your plans. You spent a lot of time figuring it out. Best not to second guess. Good luck with the leveling. That's the most fussy part. Will be worth the effort in the end. So much space to build to your heart's content

Not sure if anyone mentioned this, but I remember in your old Lego city in your basement, underneath the tables you had an underwater area with all kinds of sea life. Maybe now that you have more room you can make the Lego city transition from city to Beachtown to ocean and have the city elevated and the ocean section underwater if that makes sense. So essentially have the city built up higher, so that way you really have some dynamic scenery going from mountain area all the way down to sea level, which will still be raised up with a beach section and then having an under sea level down the edge of the table

The tables look massive. Just use some of your leftover wood that you have to screw the plates together at the same height so they will come to the same level. You will just need about 80 screws.

When all is said and done and looking amazing, maybe you could get one of those mini camera drones for fly by shots of the city.

Get a biscuit jointer or hire one for the day

They make very thin metal plates that you can use to cover your joints and glue them together to the plate and it will keep them the same level less shimming

I think you will have to level and square one table then the rest of the tables will need to leveled and squared to it. Always use boards on edge for strength. Start with the tallest table, shim up the shorter to the taller.

Shouldn’t be that difficult to build some tables! 🤣 definitely stick to building Lego! 😅😂

Where you have the blue and tan baseplates, might be awesome to have a beach that runs the length of the whole table. Like your city ends at the beach. You could make a big boardwalk!

Rent or buy a laser level to assist with squaring up the tables. Can also use it for leveling the tables

2x6's or 2x8's. No pith in the middle of the board is best. Everything on it's edge and use a green laser level to shim everything.

When it comes to everything being ready to go, I hope the 1st set to make it up onto the tables is the Detective's Office 😊 An incredible job and it's been great fun to watch (and continue to watch) the progress 😁

Does anybody know why the three table sections with the access holes are 6.5, 7, 6.5 baseplates wide and not 7, 6, 7? I assume it was discussed in a video somewhere, and I assume the half baseplate dimensions are intentional for some reason even though it seems more logical to have whole baseplate dimensions, but I can't find where that was discussed.

Do not make holes to crawl under and pop through. That gets much harder as you get older. Make walkthroughs with bridges. You will enjoy it much more. Is the entire city going to be the same height? Different levels seam to enhance Lego Cities. Awesome work as always.

You should stick with the layout you're working on now. Don't change it.

The joining sheet bear in mid if you put metal plates underneath and you lean on them in future they may pop out the screws and wreck the wood. You may be better putting big wood 4x2's on the edges to like the two already there so 4 per mid section. Then if you still need the metal do that to but if you then lean on it over it it wont break.

Have U thought about getting a drone to take video from above the city?

The frames should have been built with metal studs and tracks as they are not warped

I know it would be expensive, but did you ever consider putting sit/stand desk legs on the cross sections? You could then make those raise up making it a bit easier to get through the rows.

Use some 4 x 8 inches melamine pieces in the bottom part of the edges where the melamine and screw them with 1/14 screws and all the table should go flat
