A walk-through of my Blackmagic Design Micro Cinema Camera Rig. I tried to keep the rig as compact as possible. A single battery keeps cables things simple and powers the system all day.
With this setup, I can record RAW in camera and Prores into the video assist monitor. I have easy clearance to grab the top handle when carrying it around. I've added a simple setup to attach and tilt the Video Assist Monitor, while also making a side handle available.
The Metabones speedbooster (focal reducer) allows for a wider view and faster glass. The Canon EF Mount Rokinon Cinema lenses are a bit larger, so the rig is mounted over a 15mm quick release baseplate to add height. The 15mm rails then allow for a follow focus or mattebox. Something to consider before you buy: The Battery V-Mount that MrCheesyCam linked and used in the video above is not the only (or best option) for this kind of rig. On amazon, MOVO sells a V-Mount Battery Plate that not only has more options with connecting devices to one battery, but it is $50 more affordable. This mounting plate also has a wide variety of reviews that makes it a more customer friendly option due to the qide amount of FAQ already answered for you. Also, the LP-E6 dummy adapter is removable; therefore, the V-Mount can be used for all sorts of set-ups that do and don't require that specified battery. Another thing to take note of is the build quality. The MOVO mount comes entirely made out of metal, and the look & feel of the mount is much more durable. All in all, I am sharing with all of you an alternative to the listed V-mount Plate that can save some extra bucks and give you more powering capabilities at one time.

I feel like I’ve searched your site pretty thoroughly for specific notes/links on how to build the Panasonic battery to cannon dummy battery adaptor for the micro rig (your other micro video). Also the 7.2 output to BM video assist. I’d be happy to buy all parts including the suggested batteries through your site. It’s the least we all can do to say thank you for your creative impute and generosity. Actually I’m surprised that Blackmagic or = has not nabbed you up and put you on their team. You’d be a perfect fit to take their ideas and put them into user friendly, real world applications. Once again, thank you for sharing.

Great setup. I traded in my Sony A7'sII for bmmcc and am happy so far, even if only recording to HD, raw DNG HD is the bees knees. Almost went full V-lock battery too, until I took a risk and grabbed the NP-F bridge plate, similar to what you built on here. From that I can power camera, and monitor via one lightweight battery. The crop factor is a super pain however, even with a speedbooster attached. Still, dynamic little camera.

I love your rig setup. I like how you covered the lcd with the vmount battery but I’ve heard you can’t get the lcd touch screen menu on any external monitors so you still need access to the lcd screen to change settings like codec and other things. Really smart rig, thank you for sharing. I have the camera, the cage, a top handle and the same monitor so I’m 1/2 way there. You mentioned that you made your own cable. Nice rig! Sort of what I was thinking in my head. Would you still go out and get a BMMCC today with the BMPCC4K out? I have a 4K 24 fps super 35 camera and sometimes I can’t tell 4K from 2K on my 4K monitor. But having BRAW or say ProRes RAW on any new camera system would be great. I was thinking of (after being so unimpressed with all the new cameras that came out in 2019) of getting the BMMCC and hooking it up to a gimbal system. Be like an Osmo on steroids but still small enough to be fun. Do you think that is possible, or is it firmly in the heavy world? Also I’m confused.... did Blackmagic ever get the Micro to EVER have a global shutter working?

For these Micro cameras, they have one camera that records to sdxc up to 1080/60 RAW. Then they have another 4K camera that has no sdxc, and cannot be recorded to raw. You will need a separate recorder for it.

EF-BMPCC T Speedbooster. Mine didn't fit at first, but I contacted Metabones and ordered a flange backing plate that fits the BMMCC. This took a while bc customer service is slow, but once you swap the original plate with the BMMCC one it works like a charm. Just be really careful and mindful of the TINY screws when swapping out the backing plates. I accidentally broke a screw the first time, bc there was one so small that I didn't realize it was on there, which resulted half of the screw to be stuck inside the plate. Metabones sent me a second backing plate, but they forgot to thread the tiny screw hole, so the screw didn't stay in. The third time everything came out perfect. It was a big headache, but well worth it. For speedy customer service, go to their website and order what they call a "service request". Then, email them and make sure to include the transaction ID of the service request, pictures of the Speedbooster including serial number, write the serial number itself, and description of what you need (i.e bmmcc flange backing plate for EF-BMPCC T Speedbooster) and your shipping address. The third time, I ordered it this way and it took about a week for the new plate to get to me, since it skips over any back and forth e-mails between you and customer service (this process can take days due to time-zone difference.) Hope your experience goes smooth; you might get lucky and get a Speedbooster that fits right out of the box. If it's too tight to turn, don't force it and order a new plate. Hope this helps. Cheers!

Do you have any issues with the Rokinon lenses being wide open going into the speedbooster? I have the same setup but I can't use any of the rokinons lower than a T/2.0 because they suddenly get a huge magenta shift, bad chromatic aberration, and become so soft that it looks like there are fingerprints all over the lens. I know no lens is optimal wide open and I figured it was just a fault of the lens but then I tested the kit on non-speedboosted cameras like the EVA1 and C100 and none of those things were an issue. Have you noticed anything similar with your speedbooster and lenses not playing well together?
@MrCheesyCam
@MrCheesyCam 6 жыл бұрын
Yes the Rokinon lenses are not good wide open, and worse with a speedbooster wide open. You have to stop down and then its fine.
@ParanoidFactoid
@ParanoidFactoid 6 жыл бұрын
Did you talk about that problem in your Rokinon lens kit comparison? That's really worth a video, particularly for those considering a speedbooster on m43. If I lose a stop anyway, why did I buy that lens other than to one day move off m43 to full frame? I'm basically buying the speedbooster for nothing and might as well go Veydra. Especially if I plan a migration path up to APS-C instead of full frame. Yes, I know it's a T2.2 vs T1.5, but the Veydra glass is better.
@Ryan-Payne
@Ryan-Payne 6 жыл бұрын
This happens because of the speedbooster specifically, not only does it increase light and reduce crop factor but it does this by condensing down the entire light projected by the lens. Without a speedbooster the small s16 sensor would only use the very middle of the lenses optics which is the very best part but also have a horrible crop factor, this is great for old lenses which have a cinematic look but are often weak wide open. As the speedbooster uses the entire lenses image projection then you really will notice it's flaws. it's why the sigma 18-35 is so popular because it has such great image quality with very little flaws.

Is there any reason you've chosen this model of the micro studio camera?
@MrCheesyCam
@MrCheesyCam 6 жыл бұрын
Actually mine is the ‘Micro Cinema’ camera as it records HD RAW and writes to an internal SD card. The other is a ‘Micro Studio’ camera which does 4K, but has no card to write to. You need an external recorder like the Video Assist 4K (larger monitor), and you will not be able to capture in RAW format. - I like RAW...

I am not into this camera at all. Sure, it shoots raw. So what. Only 1080p with an S16 sensor. Give me the Panny G85 @4K or a trueblue GH4 with Atomos any day. Which, for the money you spent on that (very nice) rig, you could buy a GH4 and Atomos no prob. The big advantage of the Micro Cinema is global shutter. For what, whip pans? And if you're considering the GH5/5s and Atomos, consider the Ursa Mini. Which, for the price, is an amazing deal. That's a great camera if you can control set and lighting.
@MrCheesyCam

Maybe one day I will look into a GH4, an Atomos, or an Ursa...
@ParanoidFactoid
@ParanoidFactoid 6 жыл бұрын
Oh come on. The GH4 is as old as the Micro Cinema and a bit cheaper. You do have to spend for the recorder though to get 10 bit. But at least you get 4K@30p prores. The micro cinema gives you gorgeous raw at 1080p. But what do you need that for? I'm not hating on Blackmagic here. They make some great stuff. And I'm not hating on you or your channel either. I'm watching and wish you well in your productions.

1080 RAW is better than 4K compressed. If you are outputting to KZfaq or other social media 4k is a waste. I would take this camera over a GH5 any day.
