That is a exciting project thanks for sharing with us Jesse.

The leaking part around the 10 minute mark is a regulator. Carefully remove and clean but the sealing faces were a little feral. If you get some very fine sand paper on a sheet of glass, rub the faces till they come clean and even. You could try draw-filing but be careful. When ready to put back together, wash parts dry and use a small smear of gasket silicone on the outer seal surface, now re-clamp parts back together but only nip them up, let it cure for a few hours in warm place then tighten some more, fit and check for leak. If you still have issue, replace the diaphragm.

I thought that air leak was a new farm animal. 😅

That would be a great base for a living unit that can be easily removed for work and put on for vacation.

8:00 Im a auto shop owner in PA. I was watching a video by Bernie Thompson. He is a wizard with diagnosing things. He was explaining how soapy bubbles will show a small leak. Under .005 Inch. Anything larger and it wont bubble. I mean it still kinda shows but ya dont get the big bubbles like ya do with smaller leak.s

that's going to be a nice truck when you get it all set up. we had several in the fleet at work. as far as your heat stuck on those hvac control heads are notorious for going bad since its all electronic just something to take a look at if the blend door checks out

Definitely keep it simple, light(er) and cheap as you can. I wonder if your other step fail was really because it covered the battery. Being buried in projects can get suffocating. It can suck away too much mental energy. Greetings from Australia.

Jesse, something else that works really good for cleaning greasy parts is the “Super Clean” cleaner-degreaser. I think it works even better than brake clean. You can get a gallon of it for $10 or so, just spray it on the part, and hose it off with compressed air. Doesn’t dry your hands out like brake clean will either

One suggestion would be a removable bed on adjustable legs. This way would could just have a carry bed with low sides then you have an option of building a second removable bed with a box camper for it that gives you a multi use truck and you have some flexibility. I wonder how a 20’ shipping container measures out maybe ?

The registration difference is all single vs tandum rear axles I believe. Or that is how it was where I lived. The insurance difference is massive too.

This vehicle could become many things with your talent. Maybe being used a lot to have some family time and trips would be something that you'll value and build memories with the family.?🤔?🙂

When you remove the rear axle, that will be the time to address the frame. It will then be easier to remove air lines and harness. Before going hog wild with sandblasting or laser, try a needle scaler. I think most of that rust is surface and will drop right off with a compressor run needle scaler. HF has an inexpensive McGraw brand name that works pretty good. If you are swapping axles, it wont be that hard to remove the cross members, which you will probably have to do to move your drive shaft carrier bearing. Then the whole rear frame is exposed. JC Smith Projects has some good videos on moving axles and a slick way to quickly move the holes for spring carriers and bump stops (you probably already saw). Once all the stuff is off, you can probably scale the back in about an hour or two. POR15 is pretty expensive and some people have had mixed results. You might consider using a rust converter first, and then use a self-etching primer and some good old Rustoleum or some tractor paint will probably be good enough. Tractor Supply sells some farm/implement paint by the brand name Majic. You can get a whole gallon of it for $60. Definitely get the Catalyst/Hardener. For $85, you will have enough for the frame, fuel tanks, steps, etc. They also have some Rust Kutter for the rust conversion. I think it is just phosporic acid though. If you pre-treat with that, wipe down with some acetone. The self-etching primer basically has some acid in it already. The factory frame looks like that because the stuff they put on at the factory is $hit. It will be harder to address the front end, but again removing the front axle will give you much more access. You have some rot on the lower body. There is where the hours can burn. Hopefully the cab floor pans are solid. A diesel tank with a pump behind the cab would be good and the tool boxes on either side of it. I just got a 8'x9' brand new Knapheide steel flatbed with the removable steel sides from a place called Fayette Trailers in Cocolamus, PA for $2300. Might be 250 miles from where you are though.
