In this video, we form and pour a concrete joist system, using 12" build block. This is a cast in place suspended concrete floor. The company I am using is Buildblock. I will also be using this system for my roof. Here is the link to these blocks:

This is exactly what I was hoping to see. I never seen anyone on KZfaq going to town with these ICF blocks. They all stop with a sill plate 1 foot above ground. Skyward from there is all wood.

Great job Jesse. You'll never be sorry you used concrete, I'm convinced. Here in Europe, on top of concrete (which is what everyone does) you'll find in 99% of cases ceramic tiles for bathroom and kitchen and wooden floor for the rest of the house (called parquet, 22mm thick, usually oak, less often beech). This type of wooden floor is great for maintenance. You can refinish it many times (every 15 years or even less often, since it's usually covered with carpet). Both are great for transmitting heat of the radiant floor heating system to the surface. Merry Christmas!

Tiles in a kitchen is a bit 90's, atleast in the Netherlands and Austria. Also a lot of house, especially new ones use PVC flooring since it's very effective to let the floor heat through.
@RubenKelevra
@RubenKelevra 2 жыл бұрын
Well, actually we don't often pour concrete floors... it's much more common to use prefabricated slabs and just fill in the cracks. We also don't do floor heating within concrete. It's usually put into a layer of screed we put on top of the concrete. The screed will detach the flooring from the concrete and avoid cracking of tiles etc. While I love wood flooring I wouldn't recommend it if you have floor heating. It insulated quite well and heating takes a lot of time. So in the children rooms you can do something like cork flooring, which is quite nice for children, but in the rest I would actually use tiles or vinyl flooring because of less thermal insulation.
@RubenKelevra
@RubenKelevra 2 жыл бұрын
@@Xboxers well it depends. Tiles have had quite a comeback with those very large tiles and natural stone ones. So black natural stones like slate are quite nice and definitely trendy right now. But I prefer the simplicity of PVC. You can just replace individual pieces and it's simply glued to the ground like carpeted floor.

Wooah! Ton of work to prep 1st raised cc floor with formed Styrofoam then detailed rebar reinforcement, radiant heat tubing with 'c' shaped strapping (? correct name?) & pour & power trowel. Lots of engineering details for this temporarily supported cc slab 1st floor span. Big effort for superior strength & longevity. Great job Jesse, this level of detail & investment shows absolute commitment to protect & provide for your family. I was thinking that you drilled into the slab where tubing was. You fooled me! I had to go back and review previous videos, to see that you planned it, by placing tubing around a square area where the vertical steel beam was going in. No tubing was harmed in the making of this video!

That this for what its worth. Worked for 50 yrs as a piping designer, we used 8x31 (8x8) for many a pipe support over that time. 1.5" is like a standard edge distance for base plate bolts, a big know/know is, you never weld to the face of flange on a WF, web is ok. Civil might weld the studs to a 8.5 w plate the stich weld the .25 overhang to the edge of the flange. Just saying.

Know someone who moved into a new construction built very tight with all spray form and the family was feeling tired and lathargic. They got a air test and carbon dioxide levels where high, ERV/HRV solved it.

My thoughts exactly. Seems more interesting than watching a wood frame house being built. I live in a concrete house, but not built like this one. Our house doesnt have insulation on the walls and was made / built in the early 1950's. I am not sure if it is a pre-fab house, but all outer walls are concrete. Concrete floor downstairs and wood beams / joists and floorboards upstairs.

We had a 20 feet span in our 2 suspended concrete slabs. Both bowed down, and it showed up after a couple of years. On ground level there appeared a small crack between the tiles where the link was to the side room and pushed out plaster on an non-load-bearing wall around the stairwell at the ceiling (4 feet from outside wall). Upstairs the damage was worse. All separating non-structural wall's got a horizontal crack because the non-reinforced 3 inch thick gypsum walls were encased at the foot in the sagging floor and the upper part stayed in place near the roof because of the box structure created. Even our central heating unit was dangling on the upper part. But our builder fixed everything without additional costs. Best wishes, stay safe, greetings from Holland
@jmuller86
@jmuller86 2 жыл бұрын
were they like this one? everything is a little overkill on this one. the span is 22ft to the inside of the walls, 24 to the outside. did it have all this rebar?
@earlshine453
@earlshine453 2 жыл бұрын
@@jmuller86 Ours was with prefab slabs hoisted in place. Lower floor with thick styrofoam below and rough floor with space for addional concrete with embedded floor heating. Did not see the rebar, Upper floor 3 inch concrete with rebar halfway in and ontop sticking out, prefab panels. Don't know if they put additional rebar in. Total thickness in the end around 8 inches. Builder stated it was a design not tested before. Later on I did see a lot of multistory apartments and a lot them had an U-profile on top of their non-load bearing dividings walls. I suspect they hide free space there in that profile in order to allow bowing of the floors. Most likely your design is a bit more sturdy, But in general I recommend to put up some cheap wall texturing and not that expensive stuff we did plaster our walls with. Over here in Holland you are playing safe if you wait 3 to 5 years in order to let the building settle and avoid the need to plaster once more. Sorry for being not very specific, but our county lost the detailed building specs when I wanted to check them.

Two critiques: 1) Never attach the radiant tubing to the rebar. The expansion and contraction of the tubing during the heat cycles will cause the tubing to rub against the metal rebar and wear holes in it. 2) That concrete was WAY too wet to start using the power trowel and having to work it so much to get it smooth, because it wasn't ready yet, makes the top layer of the concrete really weak and flaky. You bring too much cream to the surface and push too much aggregate to the bottom. Over working the concrete makes it weaker and can also lead to the surface layer peeling off in chunks and sheets.

@@kiiiisu Any time there is a variation in temperature, of any kind, there is expansion and contraction. It doesn't matter if it is hot to cold, cold to warm, warm to hot, hot to even hotter, etc. And in the case of a radiant system, you are talking a temperature drop of anywhere between 10 and 50 degrees, with the target around 15 degrees cooler. This is plenty for expansion and contraction. Besides that, cross-linked polyethylene tubing is *never* supposed to contact or rub against metal under basically any circumstance. And I own a construction company, so I've done this more times than I can count.

@@justinnav Have you ever heard about a case where this contraction and expansion resulted in a broken tube? I think you haven't, because the CLTE of polyethylene and carbon steel are very similar, anywhere from 10 - 50 α, depending on the specific type of tubing and rebar used.

Yeah, both things catch my eye also, but I don't think he will have probelm with heating tubes.
