YES, I Said PSI instead of PCI. It was the 10th take or so and I messed it up. 😊 I hope everybody is having a wonderful day!!! ☀

Half way through I smiled and thought "who needs Drive A in 2022??!" Then I remembered that you are building a DOS PC :) I love the idea of running everything of a CF Card. I've still got my first ever PC (Cyrix 486 2-66) with a defective hard drive. I think I might try and get it running again. Waiting for the "Air-Flow" cables had me giggling, too.

I have a cf card reader on my modern pc, so copying stuff over is super easy.

@@RetroGameCouch Haven't even considered that! Networking in DOS times was a beast on it's own! running ipxsetup everytime before running Doom was my first real networking experience :)

Those IDE cables are so neat, should be obligatory for all retro builders.

ive never thought about completely hiding the unnecessary front panel cables. definitely will use that trick in the future somewhere :) cheers

It makes the build so much cleaner. And usually there is plenty of room. 👍

Another nice one :) Not sure if you have the budget for it (or even if the parts exist) but a build with DOS/Win 95-98 compatible newly produced stuff would be interesting.

Excellent video! I enjoyed the pacing of the assembly. Nice job editing. As a follow up, maybe you could go into a little more depth about some games you enjoy if you get the inclination? Mister has a pretty good DOS implementation. It's not nearly as fast as this rig, but it gets the job done. So interest in it is pretty high (relatively lol). Also, the algorithm loves "hidden gem" videos...

good pc build. in that time this kind of cable management was over the top! flat cables where the norm, rounded cables where epic!

All I can think of when I see this is "Man, I am so glad PC building isn't like this anymore, building PC's in the early days was just awful".

I know it is difficult to find period perfect parts now, but you upped so much your machine, that you will constantly find problems with games using improper timing (means lots of bugs, some games will become unbeatable, you will need to install slowmo or similar) or being unable to address RAM! (some will default to think you don't have enough RAM as they won't be able to map it if it's over 32 or 64 mb). That machine will work better with a slower CPU, less ram, or used for win98se.

Not a single game has failed me yet. Sure, older games will run too fast, but for these older games I have a dos laptop (check video about the ms-dos laptop).

@@RetroGameCouch Sometimes, the damage is "hidden". Game seems to run OK, but then you find some oddity (pe: Alone in the Dark 1 and the infamous "stairs bug", or being unable to run). Hey, whatever works tho! Will check the MS-Dos laptop video.

This was a trip down Memory Lane for me. I think that you let the flat cables bother you too much - yes, they aren't pretty, but if the chassis isn't transparent, the internal prettiness is irrelevant. Also, I expected see the software installation and disk partitioning, and was disappointed by its omission from the video.

I have an old "SiS 630" motherboard-based computer. It initially came with Win98 SE with all drivers (built-in Sound Blaster compatible card), etc. But the hard drive on that died and I was unable to recover anything from it. I did manage to boot into FreeDOS via a DVD, and have a replacement HDD. I was wondering, if I wanted to install DOS, not Windows, how would I install drivers on it? since I can't find any compatible with DOS Also, just an idea: Maybe installing FreeDOS instead of MSDOS would make an improvement to the system, with some built-in drivers such as mouse and networking
@RetroGameCouch
@RetroGameCouch 2 жыл бұрын
what drivers are you referring to? for sound, adding a SET BLASTER line to your autoexec.bat is enough 90% of the time.

Have you ever used FreeDOS on real hardware? I've considered doing an old school DOS build, but would like to use FreeDOS.

@@RetroGameCouch I don't know much about it, I'm just curious. I know that it's open source and is still being developed, that they've added more commands than were available in MS-DOS, networking support and even developer tools like compilers and assemblers and such. Just seems like, if I were going to build a DOS system, especially if I were to want to put it on a network, that FreeDOS makes a little more sense since it's being actively supported and updated.
