Great job on that Stack Pack. I spent $1200 on one last year for a Sabre 34. I never could take could have done one myself. One tip the maker told me for the rigging was to attach the top blocks to the spreaders and not the mast which will give it a wider area for the sail to fall.
@MJSailing

I could never have imagined making one of these for our Sabre either...but I guess two years on this boat has taught me I can do just about anything now. 😉 Thanks for the tip on the blocks too!

Great job on the stack pack. Jessica is pretty handy to have around! Personally, I've always preferred a traditional cover for the overall look, but there is no denying that this setup makes life a lot easier. You guys are getting there!

Funny, I always liked the clean and straight look of a stackpack, but thought their usefulness was limited since we spend so much time with the cover off sailing or with it on at anchor. Matt

Another job very well done. The more I see of your boat the better I like the look of your boat. The Navy isn't painting the hulls of the LCS class ships and no one appears unhappy with that now that its been that way for several years.

Wow! I wish I would have seen this video a litle sooner, I just had a stack pack made by North Sails in Milford, CT. Although it's still being shipped to me I paid 1350.00 for it. Yours came out terrific so far! Not sure I could have done all the sewing but I could have done a bit of it (the straight parts maybe) and asked my sister to do the tricky stuff. Live and learn. I'm sure this gonna give it a try next time around! Great Job!

Thank you so much, but it was easy with Sailrite's tutorial. They really do break it down step by step so you basically just have to measure, cut, and sew. 😀

Nice work on the stack pack! I used the Sailrite tutorial two years ago to build a stack pack for a friend's Jeanneau 45 which just completed a 12,000 nm circuit of the Pacific (for which I was aboard for the first 6,000 nm. The pack held up very well. Sunbrella is great stuff if you protect it from chafing. I made a few mods but found the tutorial to be very good. I included the mast boot with zippers on both sides for easy removal.
@mattjohnson6716
@mattjohnson6716 7 жыл бұрын
Hey Ken, did you find having to store and keep track of the boot on the mast an issue? We decided to attach the luff end directly to the mast with twist fasteners so we didn't have to worry about the boot going overboard. Matt

Love your videos and seeing your detailed work come to life. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and a tiny bit of your life with the world. You're an inspiration. Don't know if you'll still be around but we might be neighbors in a week or two. I'm taking delivery of my first sailboat and headed over to Indiantown Marina to join in the boat-working, storm-running, mosquito-swatting, sweat-pouring fun of a Florida boat yard in the summer time. I hope to run into you two if you're still around. BTW - Next time you're out on the town there are two restaurants you should definitely visit. One is called Leftovers Cafe in Jupiter and the other is directly across the road from Rocco's.. It's Christopher's Kitchen. Leftovers has some great seafood plates (and other things) and don't miss the raspberry key lime pie (if you're a Key Lime-aholic). Christopher's is a vegan restaurant (slightly pricey) but coming from me, a meat-asaur, I can tell you that I could easily become a vegan eating food like that. The avocado pizza is awesome (sounds strange but trust me.. it delicious).

Love the color of your stack pack!! Forget the naysayers... Really great job you did. I'm truly impressed by both your can do attitudes mostly because I feel the same. It's kinda a little late, but look into Tenara thread by Gore. It'll last WAY longer than dacron, so you won't have to be restitching everything you make in a few years. Just made my dodger with it. Good luck and keep up the good work!!!

I made the same stack pack earlier this year. I used the polyester webbing they suggested, but it has already failed. I would recommend going with a heavier nylon. I've replaced some of it and it's working fine. Can't wait to see how you tackle the dodger, that's next on my list.
@mattjohnson6716
@mattjohnson6716 7 жыл бұрын
What made the webbing fail? Typically, polyester is better with UV than nylon. Did it fail for lower strength? Matt
@TheTywad
@TheTywad 7 жыл бұрын
matt johnson It failed by abrasion. The loops that held the SS rings at the aft end wore thru. Not sure how they had that much movement, but it only took about three weeks for the to fail.

I must say..... You did a fantastic job on the Stack pack ! It looks great and the color is perfect with the overall look you were looking for with the aluminum hull .... And.... your graphics you went with. Are you using more of the same color fabric? If so.... cool deal ! If you use a different color fabric...... I say cool also...as that will again highlight what I believe the look your going for. I love your sailing vessel and what you have done with it. I would be so proud to be sailing her ! :)

This is off topic>>> I keep thinking about all of that freeboard and then adding another hard dodger... the pilot house sticks up so high as it is. I just worry about your LOA vs freeboard & horsepower in a storm. The silhouette is more like a motor sailor than an ocean crossing vessel. Though great for Island hopping. Maybe a soft Dodger is more flexible in weather???
@mattjohnson6716
@mattjohnson6716 7 жыл бұрын
Yes, I agree. The boat has a low sheer line, but the cabin top does add windage. Because of this, we made the hard top of the dodger fairly narrow. Once made, the cloth sides with be angled further outboard to create a more rounded shape to the dodger. Hopefully, once heeled, this will present a low and acute angle towards windward. Matt

Have you investigated the photodurability of the ginko green? The reason all sail covers, biminies and stack packs are either the ubiquitous navy blue or that one oxblood maroon is that those dyes have a proven longevity in the sun. Please investigate this. You did a magnificent job, Jessica, but I would love to know it's going to last.

I think I missed something... the pack zips over the sails when they are lowered. How are the port & starboard sides fastened to the boom? Are the twist locks passed under the boom and then twisted shut fastening the pieces together? If fastened above the boom, how is the main rigged to the boom? Another great video!
@mattjohnson6716
@mattjohnson6716 7 жыл бұрын
Harpo, The two halves of the pack come together under the foot of the sail (above the boom) with the twist fasteners as you said. It allows it to float and move with the sail and not be held rigid to the boom. A simple solution. Matt
@johnh.5779
@johnh.5779 7 жыл бұрын
matt johnson thanks for the reply. So the tack and clew are all that are fastened down? I was assuming there was a rope or sliders to feed the foot of the main along the boom.
@mattjohnson6716
@mattjohnson6716 7 жыл бұрын
Harpo, Our main is attached by slides to the boom. The stackpack's attachments (twist fasteners connecting the two sunbrella halves) are arranged to be between the slides on the boom. I've seen packs with their own slides that go on the boom every other mainsail slide, but that isn't necessary as the slides hold the main on the boom, and the twist fasteners hold the pack under the sail. Do you think that I could get by with a Singer sewing machine to create a stack pack? or would I need a heavy duty model to sew through the Sunbrella. Thanks
@MJSailing
@MJSailing 7 жыл бұрын
Usually the only issue with Sunbrella is how thick it gets with multiple layers. Sewing one hem (two layers) you should be ok. 3 layers and it may get tougher....4 may be it's limit. But if it's a heavy duty Singer you'll have better luck than with other machines.

Hi you guys, I've got the same Sailrite kit. My daughter and I have finished the hardest part, which I think is mostly the layout and zipper install. Did you guys use the Tanya thread ? Also, I wanted to make a couple of adjustments from the Sailrite plans, which were to add reinforced nylon webbing to the lazyjack attachments. One other question, have you tested reefing the main sail yet?

Have fun with the project. Your upgrades sound like a good plan. We used the standard uv poly thread, but not the Gore Tenara thread. I haven't used it myself, but heard it's difficult to work with. Also, we like to change stuff around, so I doubt this will be up for 5 years.... even then, if we have to restitch, as doing it once, it's not too bad. Matt

One question. Why a yacht with a tiller as apposed to a helm's wheel?
@MJSailing
@MJSailing 7 жыл бұрын
We use autopilot 95% of the time, and that way when we're anchored, we can flip the tiller up and gain extra cockpit space.

Did the painted walls in the kitchen have any influence on color decision making (subliminal msg here) ? They look almost identical, from my screen anyway:)....looks great, I use a little darker shade of green in my home, mainly because I hear 'these' green colors are a sign of intelligence.

...maybe some Velcro at the end pack?
@mattjohnson6716
@mattjohnson6716 7 жыл бұрын
Which end... mast or end of boom? The open end of boom is something we need to figure out and I'm not sure why it's typically left open. The mast side will get twist connectors and attach directly to the mast. Matt

Ok for your opening sequence your logo's second icon is completely washed out by the setting sun...it might look better either moving the logo or using a different picture.

Haven't even gotten the reef lines in yet. New lines got shipped yesterday, so we'll be rigging the boom soon. Everything molds here almost instantly, so I'e been holding off on that for awhile. Matt

Question......Is that damage on the starboard bow about 1 foot up from the water line?
@mattjohnson6716

Nope. No damage.... maybe the anchor locker drain you're seeing? Matt

When I posted this video to FB a few weeks ago, a lot of people were surprised to find they used floating docks here, but usually with the two regulated locks surrounding us, it's not an issue. Sorry to hear Santa Fe Lake's water levels are keeping you from your own boat. 🙁

Did you teach the Teho crew Euchre?
@MJSailing

No, but they did teach us a game similar to Uno. Starts with a B, but I can't remember it now.

Boomo maybe? As former Michiganders, Euchre is one of our favorites, but no one here in Nevada has ever even heard of it. My dad lives on Bear Lake in Muskegon and we were back in Michigan for vacation the first 2 weeks this month. We were in GR and I said to my wife "Matt and Jessica are from around here", and she was like "who??". She doesn't watch your channel so she was confused until I explained, lol.

What did you pay per month while on the hard? I just checked a place in San Diego and it is $100 per day,,, they said we might be able to discount a little for a month or more,,, for the work being done I could pay someone to do it for that price,,,, welcome to California 🙄

That's a lot of tedious work to mark out a straight line like that. You might want to google "how to use a chalk line" if you ever have to do something like this, again.

There were so many times I wished I had bought a chalk snap line while laying out the interior. Then I'd get to home depot and forget what I wanted to buy while in the tool section. I'm easily distracted by toys. Matt

Bill Turner - I totally agree. I am often amazed at comments that folks find appropriate to make on channels like this. While I wouldn't have selected that color either, it's THEIR boat not mine. Perhaps I missed the part where Jess asked us to sign off on her color choices.

JLSOhio51 ...... Yes..... They have put so much time and money in this boat. Painted and re-painted, and so much more. Not to mention the time it takes to produce these vids for people to enjoy and follow along. Then to have someone open mouth and insert foot..... Wow

You know, with everyone going the navy blue route for their shade cloth and sail covers it's nice to see that some folks are a little more original in choosing their colour schemes... and put a lot more thought into it than just following the masses.
