Is that a milling machine?
Why Yes, Yes it is! A 20 year dream come true!
Making a die to bend metal that will fit in my live hydraulic portable press.
I decided each die will be it's own video. In this part I build the "anvil" part. You will get to see it in action in Part 2 .

hey Mathew, nice machine, I really enjoyed mine, you want to avoid climb milling with it , it will cost you many endmills. you might want to replace the plastic handles with alum or steel ones, the plastic ones break open fairly easily. glad to see your enjoying it. dont be shy if you have any questions.

ok,you have the same mill that i bought 2 years ago for myself.get yourself flood coolant,i use it all the time.you could also try the old timer cutting oil.50% motor oil-50%kerosene ,shake well in a bottle and spray on work as needed.been using that mix for about 5 years . never went with the power down feed ,i prefer to feel the pressure on the drill bit. happy to see you have a mill,i am very happy with mine.also the motorized head movment up and down is just great.

"Wow, he got a mill!" I said out loud. I'm very happy for you. I remember when I got mine, and I was so thrilled. Check out BangGood to get end mills to break. Actually, their end mills are not bad at all. When you break one, well, it is not so painful because the prices there are humane. Speeds and feeds, my man. A HSS tool steel 3/8" end mill should be turning at around 990 rpm: a carbide end mill 3/8" at 3600 rpm. I work in millimeters, so the feed for a rough cut would be around 450 mm per minute. This improves the chance of crashing, as things go faster than you might expect. Well, I'm excited for you. I can tell, you too, are enjoying your machine immensely. Congratulations.
@WideVisionMetalFab
@WideVisionMetalFab 5 жыл бұрын
I am very excited! Learning speeds and feeds might take me a while... or at least a few more end mills! :) I'm quite surprised at how high a feed rate end mills like. With the big end mills I was using, I had the power feed maxed out on the long runs, and I think I could've gone faster! And the mill had less vibration that way, too.

Nice work. If can give some tips. Keep that machine lubed up and cleaned and it will last ages. It seems you've got a good start on it. I'm surprised at how rigid it is. The base is clearly Rong-Fu, but the column is much better. Even a bridgeport would have complained at some of those cuts. As far as endmills go, I hate the big ones. Can't seem to get enough depth of cut and the endmill holders suck out a lot of rigidity. I tend to only run up to 3/4 with 1/2 being my happy spot. As you found out later running a large depth of cut with a small stepover works best. You'll also find that roughing endmills save a lot of time and headache. I often cut 1/4" stepover and 3/4" DOC with my 1/2" rougher. Best of luck, MB

You need to make a large v block or two for your mill, It will save you a lot of set up time. I have one where there are holes that line up with the T slots on the mill so you use your standard milling clamps to hold the work. I also have a v block extender, a male 90 degree on one side and a standard 90 degree female on the other. Handy if you need to mill or drill a shaft with a hub or pulley on it.

One way to cut the glare on the mill table, is to make wood covers. Better visuals, keep from dinging the table by dropping stuff, keep chips out of your t-slots, etc. You will definately want to put some chip guards on your Y axis ways, scale from structural steel makes an unfortunately good abrasive.

Congrats on the mill purchase. As for the lighting, I've seen a machined ring with an LED strip that fits around the spindle so you get 360* lighting on the work table. Might not have been directly for a PM mill but it wouldn't be too hard to fabricobble something to suit.

Wide Vision has a mill! And a DRO! Joy. Your plans for world domination are now complete. I have read the comments so far. A lot of these have to do with conventional (cutter rotates against feed) and climb milling (cutter and feed same direction). It is true that climb milling tends to dig the cutter in. Crash. It is also true that climb milling gives a better finish. The great Tom Lipton said "there is nothing wrong with climb milling" and so it is. But you have to be very careful about depth of cut, feed rate, and RPM on the cutter. I'm still learning. So yes, try to stick to conventional milling for the time being. It is a nuisance to have to withdraw the cutter, crank it back, reset the cutter, go again. But end mills are expensive tools, and it is better to undergo a nuisance than to buy new cutters. And I think roughing AKA "corncob" end mills are very good investment.
@WideVisionMetalFab
@WideVisionMetalFab 5 жыл бұрын
Howdy Juan! Good to hear from you! I'm not quite ready for world domination, but it's definitely a good start! :) I'm really impressed with DRO. I always thought it would be nice, I just didn't think it would be this nice. Backlash is no longer a concern when figuring in location, and accuracy is amazing. Figuring out the feeds and speeds is definitely a learning curve. The one thing I've learned is just because it says what speed to use online, doesn't mean it works in the real world. I'm a little surprised at how against people are with climb milling, and it's not the reason I broke an end mill either. I guess I should have been more specific as to what happened, but I crashed because I moved the wrong handle. I still have to think when grabbing levers, and sometimes I think wrong! :) One end mill met it's demise when I flipped the power feed the wrong way, and drove it right into the clamp. Sigh. Corncob end mills seem like a good idea to me, I need to look into those. I hope you're doing well!

This mill looks like Philippe's former mill, did it just happened to fall off a truck right in front of your house... ;) Yes, you're right about a mill being a fun tool to use. Just be careful on climb milling on a machine with other than ball screw, it could bite you nasty... And I'll let you discover how those slivers from side milling are hungry for your flesh... lol Have fun... Start saving for new endmills, though... ;)

My WORD, son! And it still in the 70's and 80's here. The only respite we got was when the big blow blew through, even though the power went off for 5 hours AFTER it was all gone. 70 today with a breeze and lo humidity and it actually felt like 70 and the sky so blue it'd hurt your eyes! I've been gone from out there too long I guess. Now that you have a mill maybe the drill press will hop to it! We can only hope. Stay warm and GBWYall!

It's as close to the size I needed as I could get. Basically, the 60 degree angle requires a bit more material to be wasted. If I needed a 90 degree bend, I wouldn't have had to remove any.

Do NOT use WD40 as a "lubricant" when cutting steel. It's expensive and wrong. You can use it for cutting aluminium, but not for steel. Also don't use (pure) oil. Invest in some proper coolant. Cleanup ist easier, it's cheaper and the fumes aren't as dangerous. Your tools will also last longer. Also, learn about conventional / climb milling and why you should NEVER climb mill on a manual machine.
