Saw the diorama yesterday so watching in reverse. Thou shalt not covet the builders clamps for bending metal nor the photo etch that was not available 40 years ago. Thou will agree that "No one will see it but I know it's there"! Enjoyed watching this and the advancement of model making. Love the use of cheap Chinese brushes and the Poundshop (seemed the only shops left when I last returned). Thank you for sharing this, I have subscribed. Build on!

Forgot to say, I used sprue melted in paint stripper to make the liquid filler and would squirrel toothpaste tubes to make belts et all.

Another technique I've seen for emulating torn or punctured metal in plastic was to (very carefully!) thin out the plastic on the inside surface until it was thin enough to be realistically punctured or torn as if it were metal. Beautiful job and work!

I actually did that on this one, on the inside of the fuselage to "break" the tail off. It's also useful for making rust holes and bullet holes on vehicles too.

I remember building an Airfix Spitfire in the 60's. I one I assembled had a V1 Buzzbomb to put together and mount on the stand in front of the Spitfire. We never did get a lot of models in Australia. I recall having the Fairy Gannet, Saab Draken, Gloster Meteor, Canberra Bomber, Vickers Valiant, the Venom and an F86 Sabre, although I'm not sure about that one as most of the models were planes from GB or Europe. I could never get the decals on without splitting one. Now, having seen this vid, I will be off to local shop under the guise of getting a model for one of my friends kids.

I've got the Typhoon, included in the "Gift Set" (or as I call it, "Activity Box"). The Typhoon is a nice kit with great detail.

Excellent piece of 1/72 model building with a refreshing idea! Congratulations! 1/72 is too small for my eyes now. So, I have completed a 1/24 Spitfire with s stylized stealthy color scheme. Indeed, model building has no boundary and is ageless! My 1/72 airfix spitfire was almost 70 years ago! Thanks for sharing.

I firmly agree with John, as for the subtitles; I'm so engrossed with the build and the painting that it takes me a second to realise that there are annotations present so that extra second or two would stop me having to keep skipping back to see what was said. What a fantastic build though, kudos to you sir.

Great build. Thanks for posting the paints and mixtures you use. I would have never known that Tamiya makes a color for dark earth otherwise. It's by far the easiest paint for me to use.

Gave the exact kit to my 10yo nephew for Christmas. That has sparked me to look on the tube and led me to your pages, that in turn has made me get back into building and I've just bought myself some kits, tools, paints and an airbrush. Hooked again after 40+ years away. The decal sheet you show in the video is from a different kit, you comment that it's got far more than the starter set FW190 and that there's no instructions for the smaller decal locations. it's because yours has ended up with set from a A01071A kit but the box art shows A68206

Love your tip on painting the wheel hubs using the stencil, I bought one just like that, and was going to use it to cut masks for hubs etc, but your way of doing it seems so obvious and easy, wish I had thought about it instead of trying to cut circles but never getting them without being slightly to big or small. You have made my day with that tip. Huge thumbs up 👍. One request, could you leave the captions on screen for a little longer, just a few seconds, I have trouble reading quickly nowadays so it would be a real help to me, and probably others as well. Thanks (if you can) if not I will just have to keep going back a few seconds so I can get the whole thing read. Tx.

Glad to help. I picked up the tip about the template from another modeler and it seemed like it was a great idea to pass on. The canvas was also added to stop dirt from ingressing down the gun, and they were also useful to tell ground crew what guns were fired so they didn’t need to reload them Source: Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

A very rare Mk.1 to have a wooden prop. Only 30 or so can be confirmed via period documentation to have been fitted with such.

At the time the MK 1 was built there wasn’t a variable pitch prop available, but as soon as there was it was fitted and to the Spitfire into the big boys league, the improvement was astonishing and made the Spitfire an even better aircraft that became the icon of the Battle of Britain and beyond.

If you're impressed with the Spitfire, you'll love the Hawker Typhoon - that has open panel options for the wings. Following their rescue by Hornby, Airfix made completely new tooling for some of their iconic 'Series 1' models. And they're damned good. The cockpit details, pedals etc? Yes, the Airfix Spitfire has those too, and oxygen cylinders. The very early Spitfire 1 had a two bladed, fixed pitch wooden propellor. From the 1a, they had an all metal, three bladed Rotol variable pitch propellor. Various kinds of prop were used as the Spitfire got more advanced. If memory serves, the decal sheet carries the 'Rotol' markings for the propellor blades.

For five quid, and being a starter set, coupled with its age, makes this a worthy sacrifice in the diorama world. One question, the photo etch bender, is it strictly necessary to have one, I have not used photo etch parts before (just re-started modelling after a forty year break, working on the real aircraft) so any tips and tricks for these bits would be a great help. Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge, huge thumbs up 👍.

The photoetch break isn't 100% necessary for something like this, but I found it invaluable for larger pieces, like the flaps I put on my FW190 - you could bend those by hand I suppose, but the break makes it so much easier. They can be quite expensive, the one I have costs around £40 if I remember right, but it makes life so much easier if you do a lot of PE work. Another excellent looking build, I especially like the way you used the tin foil to simulate ripped up aircraft skin, my only criticism, and it’s a minor one, was the placement of the squadron codes on the port side of the aircraft, they seem a bit too far forward, but as I said it’s only a minor criticism, well done on an excellent build.

One of the reasons I make these videos is because I struggled to get to grips with airbrushing and it was basic info like that I could never find - what thinner ratio to use, what PSI to spray at and so on, so I wanted to try to help others in the same boat as me. As for the Mig putty, it's like magic - once you peel it off, just mush it about until it turns black again and stick it back in the tin. I dare say it'll wear out eventually, but I've had no issues with it so far. Thanks for watching.

I'm currently building an aircraft diorama for a school project and I'm just taking notes from this video but I just have a few questions 1.) Instead of masking putty can masking tape be used as an alternative to cover the aircraft or do I have to purchase the masking putty? 2.) I noticed when you were thinning the fuselage earlier in the video that is it possible to use something like sandpaper to sand out the inside of the fuselage till it becomes paper as I don't have access to a rotary tool unless I have to purchase one? If you could tell me what I can do that would be great!

They look a lot darker in the pictures/video than they actually are but, having said that, I like a nice panel line. I always see models as a stylised representation of the real thing, rather than a copy of it. It's something I picked up years ago painting tabletop wargaming figures, making things larger than life rather than an imitation, if that makes sense.

Having worked on and with aircraft all my working life I have a real appreciation of how panel lines etc look in reality, and agree they do look rather deep, however each aircraft type has some panels that could be best described as poorly fitting with major gaps around the edges, not so bad on larger types, helicopters, cargo aircraft and others, but on fighters and other “fast jets” panels have to be well fitted so panel lines should be less visible (not always possible). But personally I think it is down to the individual modeller to do things to their own ideals and views, sometimes that doesn’t fit with our ideas or the real thing, but I say if you are happy with the end product that is all that matters.

Pardon the ignorance, The last time I built a plastic model was 50 years ago as a kid. One thing that stuck in my head after reading a book on model detailing at the time was the authors insistence of sanding down rivets which as he correctly points out at 1:72 would be pin point sized. Taking that on board why then accept the ridiculously wide panel lines. Scaling up the lines of this model to full size would leave 30mm panel gaps. I would have thought pressure from discerning model makers should have banished such lazy interpretation of details long ago. It occurs to me a better solution would be for the kit manufacturer to mark cardinal points of the panels and allow the modeller to scribe the lines in with a knife or awl.

It's a common theme for modeling discussions - to panel line, or not to panel line? If you put five modelers in a room and ask about panel lines, you'll get twelve different opinions :-)

Thanks, I appreciate it. The connectors I was talking about are for header pins, I think they're sometimes called Dupont connectors. If you look at the link below, you can see the metal pins come on strips - it's that strip that I used. Just been to your channel and subscribed, I am just starting modelling again after a forty year break and having been forced to retire early due to health issues, my real passion is for aircraft models but not exclusively, I do kits that catch my eye, figures, fighting vehicles, anything except ships, never really liked them(real or kit form) but getting tips techniques and seeing how the finished article can look inspires me to be as good and accurate as I can. Unfortunately due to my health issues I have to build larger scale kits, no smaller than 1/48 or just easily handled and not to many small parts. Thumbs up 👍 to you and your Channel.

So what brought this plane down? No holes from an FW or any fire from the ground. I use a heated sewing needle to put holes where another fighter fired into it. Just a thought.

I've also had quite a few people message me wanting to buy the music, so it all balances out. I try to avoid using music when I'm talking anyway, so viewers can mute it if they wish. Just a heads up about using cheap Pound store super glue. I used to use it to glue fishing flies. However it reacted with fake fur and started smoking and getting hot. Not sure whether there's a risk of reacting with styrene, but might be worth bearing in mind. Love the videos. Regards.

Well, part one. I am viewing out of sync. I am planning a 1/48 scale example of exactly what you are doing but, for my Spitfire will sport U.S. markings in service in Africa. From a actual photo. Mine is down parallel to the beach. I saw part two first & you did very well in making realistic damage. I am glad you are back into it. I relish all this stuff you guys put out. Bravo. Nice touch with the gun port info. Photo etch makes me cringe. I find super gluing really hard & irritating. Hard to control if you're Zip kicking.

The PE sets both came from ebay. The bending tool, or break, I used came from Amazon. I've just updated the description with a list of affiliate links to a lot of the tools and stuff I use. If you buy through those links I get a cut of it (it doesn't cost you any more) but do feel free to shop around and see if you can find it cheaper.

I relly enjoyed this.. thank you. Now you should do it on a 1/32 Tamiya MkIX.. Did the PE set generally fit OK? I used Brengun on my 1/72 Valkyrie and it was like it was made for a different model. The fit was awful!!

I've only got one 1/32 scale model and I'm not building that for a while yet, but you'll see it when I do. As for the PE, I only used a few small parts. Just out of curiosity I offered up one of the cockpit side walls and it was close but I don't think it would fit. Thanks for watching.

@@SteamGeezerUK Are you sure the decals were correct for the model? No under wing roundels and the squadron identification letters seem to be big, you put them on badly especially the port side but they do seem very big.

Lovely model. I thought only the very early Spitfires had wooden 2 bladed props and the rest all metal. Could be wrong.

I was surprised myself to find out Spitfires had wooden props. Due to a lack of aluminium, the props were made of wood with a thin metal skin, made in Bristol by a company called Rotol.

@@SteamGeezerUK The Mk1a Spitfire in your model was equipped with a deHavilland bracket propeller with alloy blades. The first 72 production Spitfire Mk1a aeroplanes were initially fitted with 2-blade fixed pitch solid wood Watts propellers, but these were replaced by the deHavilland prop. Rotol constant speed propellers with wooden blades propellers were fitted to later Marks.

I thought about damage, but apparently in the early days of WW2 more aircraft were lost to engine failure or pilot error than to enemy fire. I was quite surprised when I found that out.

Beautiful work.... Actually, I would say a work of art! As any work of art, I allow for 'artistic expression', and appreciate your mentioning that as well. I personally also think the panel lines are way over done, but as I said, I am more than willing to allow for an artist's artistic license. Therefor, my only real criticism, which I beg you take as constructive in nature, comes from what I am sure is an oversight bourn from habit. Why did the pilot, who had just pulled off a successful wheels-up crash landing take the time to neatly drape his lap and shoulder belts back into the seat? Other than that, I have nothing to criticize, though I believe that only Rotox (or was it Rotol?) supplied wooden and metal-clad wooden props. So, not knowing for sure if this plane was so equipped, I will only say I like the effect you demonstrated with the prop, and will certainly be trying out that technique. And thank you for not heavily rusting the exhaust. I am told that they are actually made of Stainless Steel (at least that is what my paternal grandfather told me, and he was both a fighter pilot and his squadron's Corrosion Control Officer in the US Navy during the war, so I have no reason to doubt it though I probably should actually verify that myself). Now for an ironic thing you did with the paint job. This comes from my maternal great-grandmother (which I HAVE verified through other sources), who worked in the paint shop for Hawker during the war. The planes were indeed first sprayed with the lighter shade (Dark Earth for the most part, as she mainly did Hurricanes - though later she did paint a lot of Typhoons). Once that had cured, they rolled out a cart piled high with 'bloody great rubber mats' cut to the shape of the pattern to be sprayed ('A' or 'B', depending on whether the port wingtip was to be green (or the darker shade) or left Dark Earth (or the lighter shade). These mats were draped over the plane and the color sprayed. Just like you did with your masking material (I personally use Silly Putty, but might look into the stuff you demonstrated). Again, VERY nice job, and I look forward to looking up more of your videos.

Thanks. I was going to drape the belts out, but the ones I used were only single sided and looked a bit weird. Also, when I used to race cars years ago, it was habit to lay the belts back into the seat after getting out, so I imagine pilots might do the same (no idea though). As for the panel lines, they look way darker on the video and pictures than they actually are, but having said that, I like dark panel lines anyway - as you say, artistic expression. From my wargaming days I have a tendency to lean towards "larger than life". Thanks for the paint job story from your great-grandmother - I'd heard elsewhere that was how it was done, but it's nice to get it from the source. Thanks for watching, I appreciate it.

I often find that the "modelers" products are often just normal stuff rebadged and bumped up in price. One of the things I'm hoping to achieve with these videos is to show you don't need to spend a fortune on kit :-)

That was my idea initially, but I tried it with the landing gear still in the wing with just the cover ripped off and preferred it. I think it would work either way. Thanks for watching.

Did the squadron identification letters slip forward in the crash ? Have you never seen a Spitfire ? Unrealistic damage, wing at the point you cut it in half is probably the strongest part of a spitfire, what do you imagine took the wing off without any other damage? Not even going to mention the propeller, seen many photos of blades snapped off have you ?
