In this episode of building the BEST house, We are Preparing for windows and There is a ton getting done. We wrap up installing the LP Weatherlogic and seal tape the joints while the concrete guys are laying the concrete floors and working on the two porch walls. We also show you how we cut out windows in the sheathing and prep the opening with seal tape for the window install.
This house plan is available now here

This plan along with all of my plans are great for concept and understanding our design and building method. You could also use them to build your own or have a local builder use as reference.

This is a good book. Does provide a step by step introduction to how to build things kzfaq.infoUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 , also does offer some steps. Includes pictures to give you ideas for layouts and such. If you are looking for a guide, this is not exactly what you want. But if you are trying to familiarize yourself with the way that pole barn building and other out buildings, are made, then this will work just as you need it to. A few things in this book are a barn (of course), detached garage, storage building, and coops.

40 year carpenter here; Decades ago, mainly coastal cities were mildly waterproofing homes, mostly tar paper on the walls with no jamb wrapping, prior to installing (any) exterior veneer. Over the past 2 decades, the discovery of water damage on the substrate and framing has caused building codes to be more stringent & home builders to be more conscious of the fact that structures should be waterproof prior to any type of veneer, stone, brick, wood siding, vinyl siding, concrete siding, etc...being installed. The long-term benefits are blatantly obvious! Even with house wrap, we've always overlapped all four sides of window openings, it's definitely beneficial!! Keep up the fine tuned work, it will be appreciated by all your customers!! Btw, a smaller router bit will create less dust, I've always used a 1/4" roller bit on sheathing. Also, sheetrock has been cut out around windows, electrical boxes, etc... the same way for quite a long time...1/8" guide tip bit. It takes finesse tho!

Adding extra protection to the window openings is never over kill. I think pitching the sill a few degrees is another smart idea. If there is a window failure those steps will pay dividends down the road for the owners. A slow window leak that finds it's way inside is a disaster to repair once it's found. Those extra steps are what make you a premium builder and enjoyable to watch.

Kyle , its always a good practice to be sure than avoiding to do it ( taping the window frame before an install) Moisture is a house killer. All your builds are quality and they last long, because you don't leave out any detail and you build with care. Be it prep work for windows or installing metal roofing without a scratch. You're building it like its your own house or barns in your other projects. Happy new year to you all!

You hit it square on the head about the sloped lower window sill. Belt and suspenders, you said and I agree, as is the sheathing as opposed to just house wrapping it. The codes likely require them but the client might also have some say. Another great R&R project coming closer to delivery! FR

Right at the end, when you were talking about the window sill seals, that's when you should insert images of sill work you have done in the past. The angled sill is good too, but so are photos of work you did 10 years ago. It would be some work, but it would be cool if you took us to look at some of your old projects, plus you would have all that stock footage after the visit to insert in your future vids. Happy new year, man.

Put your router on a pole. It takes some “engineering” to get a pole attached but it’s worth it. You get further away from the router and you don’t need a ladder to reach the tops of the doors and windows. Attach it to the pole at the perfect angle and use an extension style paint pole. Trust me you’ll love it.

Going that extra mile and making sure a job is done right the first time is _always_ worth it. Never doubt that.👌 If I ever were able to build my own home, I would opt for slanted window sills, but that's just my personal preference, "belt and suspenders" and all that. But in the grand scheme of things I don't think it makes _that_ much of a difference... unless we get some hard numbers down the line proving us wrong.

Kyle, get yourself a DOWNCUT 1/4" spiral router bit. It will push the sawdust to the inside of the building, and away from the person cutting. Makes it much easier. I also built an extension pole for the router base, and use that when cutting sheathing if the walls are sheathed before raising (not applicable in your case)

another great video! TIP try a long handle for the router when cutting openings, think long handle ice scraper or square bottom shovel modified to fit the router. Also, someone, I think ZIP/HUBER makes a stretch tape for window corners probably a faster install at a price, not necessarily better but an option. Keep up the good work

Doing the first layer probably seals the fasteners I have never pre done the top and sides like that usually a foot or so on sides. But probably a good idea. Lots of ways to waste money on a job site sealing is not one of them. I have considered rolling around with some red guard lol it would be like the paint on the new ply products.

I imagine taping the sides of the sheathing to the 2x is going to help with air flow. If you're doing a high efficiency house, you don't want any way for air to get behind the sheathing. If you were only trying to stop water infiltration, the tape you put over the window flanges is going to be sufficient, but what that tape doesn't cover is air working its way up from the bottom.

It is all air barres At rough openings the self adhering is the air barrier and when the interior sealant joint is placed between the window and the self adhering this completed the air barrier If you were to slope the sill you would also have to gap the flange of the widow to let the water out Interior sealant joint is critical in this assembly Completely sealing the window flange with sealant is another method and you are creating a barrier system Head flashing over the trim is best And sealant joint between the trim and the window is the weather barrier Research sealant joint configuration

Sealing around the window is important if you want the house to last 20 years, if you don't give a damn about quality and workmanship then you cheap things out, but the owner has to come back in two or three years and you end up with a bad reputation. Keep up the good work 👍👍👍👍

I think it’s worth it. If we wanted to conceptualize the value added, we could simply take the time required to add those finishing touches to the rough opening, minus the time required to NOT add those finishing touches, and multiply by the number of rough openings on the building (assuming they are similar and size and complexity). If you find that the total added time exceeds a reasonable threshold, in which you would be losing value added to the house, don’t do those extra steps. With all that said, in this age of building, we are normally waiting on someone or something, which would make value added tasks easy to justify. Thanks Kyle!
