The quad core trashcan Mac Pro from 2013 is not good. It's overpriced and underpowered, there are a dozen Macs you can buy that offer better performance and value. But today w'ere going to try a new perspective. I already bought the cheapest trash can 2013 Mac Pro on eBay, but today we're going to use it to build the cheapest 12 core Mac Pro! The Intel Xeon E5-2697 V2 is a much more capable process and it may just save the trashcan from complete obscurity. In this video I'll go through the upgrade process for upgrading the CPU in a 2013 Mac Pro.

I actually think the design and inside look so good and luxurious. Apple might released this design as Mac non-pro with mainstream Intel cpu and a single amd gpu. So, it would be between Mac Mini and Mac Pro.

I was hoping they would make a new mid-grade affordable based on something similar to this design. A lot of us already have monitors and keyboards and just want a partially upgradable (ram, ssd) mac that we can get at an affordable price. Mac Pro Mini? Mac Mini Pro?

it's not a big deal for someone with basic HW skills. It seems today childer do not disamble stuff, like we use to do. It could be that everithing is glued, so your set of basic tools your grampa buy for you wont work (is toxic mascullinity buying a toolset for boys? I know is ok to but tools for girls). The only issue is the thermals and the non standard GPU form factor, so one can't get new GPUs for it. I knew it will fail because of the thermals.

Can you please show the benefits of using various eGPUs with various cards to see what would be a cost effective upgrade in that area? Us previous owners of trashcans would thoroughly appreciate it! I also would like for you to demonstrate the various SSD upgrade options. What I love also is that I have 64GB ram and I can run several virtualizations currently without any performance hit. I find it faster to run windows in emulation on my trashcan than actually using my various windows devices. And I always love how quiet it is!

A very well thought out video, considered and balanced, like the careful and well explained disassembly, the tidy placement of all parts to show what was done, the commentary was very interesting indeed, the only minor flaw was having music playing whilst there was commentary, it is distractig to what you are saying, even though it is quiet, i was distracted from what would have otherwise been a near perfect video. with thanks and appreciation. Following your vids late last year, I upgraded my primary workstation (from a 2013 top-spec iMac 3.7 i7 4-core) to a base model trashcan via eBay which side to side, offer similar specs. At the same time, I bought a 12-core upgrade kit thinking I was going to fly into hyperspace with my workflow. I paid @ $1,200 for the machine and $200 for the CPU kit. All things considered, my workflow (print graphics via Adobe Ill./Photoshop/InDesign) became much slower and every move of the mouse was laggy. After a week or two of this and some research, I swapped back to the 4-core and my workflow was much improved. Apparently the 12-core is more suited to tasks that take advantage of the multicore such as video work but my concern is having multiple Adobe programs all active at the same time and apparently, where higher clock speeds are more important. I'm considering swapping out the 4-core for a 6-core that has very similar clock speed to see if I can eke out a bit more performance. a few seconds of lag time here and there add up when you are doing what I do for 8-12 hours each day. My later research also lead me to wish I had held out for a D500 or D700 version graphics cards. And of course, I'm seeing more and more options for the 2013 Mac Pro on eBay, 6 months after my decision to buy what I did. Yesterday I noticed a 6-core with D500 at around $1,500. A new iMac may have been better suited for my needs but I was looking to move on to a larger screen. I find it frustrating that the Apple choices are limited to high and low-tier platforms (Mac mini & Mac Pro) which allow for customer selected screens or the happy middle tier specs but you are married to the 27" iMac screen size. 2 of them together are great but I like the extra vertical real estate of the 32" screen.I would love it if the iMac redesign includes a 32" screen option. Overall I am happy with my decision but I would like to see a bit more explanation on the different CPU options and what sort of work is best suited to each one.

So I had been using a MacBook Pro Retina 15" late 2013 model for about 6 years, until I needed to replace the battery just the the other day. I always said the once I needed to do that, I would upgrade to a 2013 Mac Pro and give my MacBook to my daughter. The reason that I wanted the 2013 Mac Pro is that I don't need a laptop and my home office set up includes two 30" Apple Cinenma Displays and a rotated 23" Apple Cinema display that is virtical between the two 30", all three us Thunderbolt. I absolutely love my monitors, and this is why I needed the Mac Pro. In order to run these monitors without further investment in adapters/cables etc., I need Thunderbolt 2. It has been a major upgrade for me to have six Thunderbot 2 ports as I have the three monitors and a Thunderbolt Focsrite Clarrete interface for music recording. Now I have everything connected at once, which is just awesome for me. In addition, I purchased the base Quad Core model for $1100 and just installed the 12 Core referred to in this video for $170. So for $1270 out the door, I have the 12 core model with 48 gigs of ram. So I think it does come down to your set up and particular needs. For me and my love affair with vintage Apple Cinema displays and my Thunderbolt display, this computer is a dream both from a cost standpoint as well as the fact that it is blazing fast for me compared to what I was using before. Plenty fast! Anyway, just a quick story there. Loved this video as it helped me to go down the road of upgrading the processor which was not too difficult and well worth it in the end.

I recently bought one of these too and it was still sealed in the box from Apple. It's also the 4 core model, but it's really not that bad of a CPU. The single thread performance is much better than the 12 core you installed. Mine scored 863 for single core on Geekbench 5. The 12 core CPU is only best for applications that can utilize multiple cores. I think the 8 and 10 core CPUs offer a better balance of performance. I plan to go with the 8 core E5-1680 v2. Some people choose the E5-2667 v2, but the thermal requirements for that CPU aren't a good match for the Mac Pro. The 10 core E5-2690 v2 would also be a good choice. It has better single core performance than the 12 core and almost as good multi core performance. Also, I suggest wearing an anti-static bracelet when working on the computer. It would also be best to use the specialized tools from Apple and follow their instructions made for technicians or have an authorized Apple service provider perform the CPU installation.

So I noticed some quirks on the Mac Pro 2013. If it has a background task running, say Plex media server. It goes to sleep, but when it does this the fan doesn’t work. So I come back in the room a couple of hours later and notice that it’s getting quite hot. I also see an amber light coming out of the base. As soon as I wake it up, the fan kicks in and he temps drop from 80+ to 40ish. This explains why some mornings I notice that it’s completely turned off. I have istat pro running and I can see the temperature Curves constantly increasing and the fan being zero. I basically have it so it doesn’t sleep anymore and have appropriate fan curves.

These are like Radeon 7950s. Final Cut and other Apps that can take advantage of two of these can equal the performance of a single RX580 at around 40,000. I bought a used RX580 for around $100 and a used eGPU housing should run at least $200. While pricing these, I would love to see some Video Editing Comparisons. I would also like to see the thermals compared while rendering out a 1 hour 4k movie. I wish Apple would have updated these to modern iMAC PRO Xeons and lower power Radeon IIV GPUs with 16 Gig video memory each. Then gave us the New machines named appropriately as XSERVE. This is more in line with what most "PRO" users need. I do very much appreciate everything you guys go through to source these machines for us and run them through their paces. Last note ... before referring to these as "Trash Cans" ... next time put any mac mini, iMac, Macbook Pro, or anything next to these and crank up a "Heaven" benchmark. Then after about 5min, close your eyes and listen. I like to call it "The Music of Silence".

Excellent Video. I'm curious through, other than looking good in Bench Marks. What can it do that it couldn't do before? What does it do better?

Can you revisit this Mac pro? To see if the latest OS of Mac can take advantage of these dual graphic processors?

The main downside is the age and graphics - the age is not a specification / the graphics? unless you are a gamer or editing video the graphics are more than adequate, I produce music and it runs Logic superbly and the thing you call the 'Trashcan' (a very negative term) has is great connectivity, the 6 thunderbolt ports across 3 separate buses and an HDMI and digital and analog audio I/O and 4 USB ports, it's expensive to buy now (so it has retained it's value) but I already have mine (with the D700 cards, 6 core and I may upgrade it to 12 core) so the current price is not an issue, it runs cool, does not over heat and is rock solid with Logic. People buy computers to use them in the real world, not to just run benchmark tests. One other thing, the reason I chose a 6 core is because the processor is faster (3.5) than the 12 core (2.8) so are the extra 6 processors worth slowing down the computer for . . . . I suppose it depends if you need throughput of faster processing or rendering power which a slower computer is OK for . . .

Nice review! Is the D700 which make it so expensive, if not doing HEVC H265 stuff, I still prefer this to the new Mac Pro, especially for its foot print and portability.

Please compare its video capabilities to anything modern, especially cheap. E.g. built-in Mac mini / MPB13 graphics or base MBP15 / iMac graphics.

Such a shame that the trash can analogy stuck (but yes I use it too). The design of this machine is masterful. This would be the perfect envelope for a kitted out balls to the walls Apple silicon machine.

Hey Luke. Great channel. Long time viewer, first time posting. Anyway a have a few suggestions that I would watch. 1. 2013 Mac Pro hard drive speed test: M.2 NVME vs M.2 SSD vs Alibaba KingSpec cheap 2Tb M.2 2. 2013 Mac Pro 12c vs 2018 Mac Mini 17 3. Thunderbolt 2 external SSD (2.5" or M.2) enclosures 4. 128GB upgrade...does this really slow down the computer with a 12c processor? Thanks Luke!

i wanted this machine so much because this is a hell good of a deal foe me. the ECC REG ram in china is extremely cheap and the cpu too, not to mention about the ssd upgrade option which is also cheap in china too. (i live in hk) Also, as i am currently a mac mini (2014) user there are really no hassle to upgrade to a mac pro 2013.

Wicked video. I want one! Always liked the look of it. Think the d300 setup could run a 4k60 display scaled to 3008x1692 smoothly? Not video editing or gaming. My 2018 Mac mini needs and egpu to run the regular day to day ui smoothly.

I was able to score a 4 core/16gb/1tb/D300 machine that had some cosmetic issues on the case with a 1 year warranty add-on for around $800. Once I unload my cMP 5,1 I think it'll be pretty cheap. I just didn't want to fiddle with hacking on the 5,1 and I don't do pro level work so the GPU isn't as important to me. Can always eGPU that issue.

Can you compare 12-core Mac Pro 6.1 with 12-core, maxed out 5.1? For just the numbers, I happen to have one (with Radeon VII installed), can run any test you want

I still have my 2013 "trashcan" and still does everything I need. And I LOVE the design. I think it is the most beautiful Mac ever made. It is only the base 4 Core configuration. I did upgrade the RAM to 32GB. No other upgrades. Logic runs great as do photo/video apps. No plan to replace it until it dies. Hard to believe but the M1 Mac Mini has better performance so THAT would be my choice today. Hopefully the M2 Mac Mini will be out when its time to bury it. I use Carbon Copy Cloner to backup my data regularly...just in case. Loving it..still.

I know other people have mentioned it, but you should compare this Mac Pro with the 5,1 Mac Pro you built a while ago, to see what is the better value overall.

Oh, and the 128G RAM option is only an option if you accept the RAM running at 1066MHz. My machine has the D700's which are still not up to much compared to even the last gen AMD/NVIDIA. I bought it for the TB2 ports as I have several last gen OWC thunderbays. One thing I hate about my machine is that the IO connections are super sensitive - I could literally just breathe on the cables at the back and drives would disconnect. It's been back to Apple for a check up and IO board replacement but it's still the same.
