In this episode I change things up with a switch to an armor build that has been sitting quietly on the shelf for the last three years.

I recently worked on a Voyager kit for a 1/35 scale tiger. It also came with working hinges for the front fenders. I was able to get the fenders correctly bent so that the hinges worked great... and then I ended up gluing it all down in place. The problem with these parts is they have almost no mass. Therefore they don't naturally lay down in place against the body of the tank. If you are ever so slightly off in your alignment or if the part is even slightly bent anwhere, then the fenders would refuse to rest down in the proper position. It ended up looking just enough wrong and out of place that I ended up gluing them down. But they do look cool regardless. The detail is amazing, and it was satisfying to work with such tiny pieces of PE and actually make it look like something.

I’m glad you went for it! In hind sight there are a few things I would do different with a voyager kit the next time around. Mostly finding what absolutely needs to be used and what can sit out.

You are correct in damaging the zimmerit as hard as you did. MG fire would knock it off a lot. I worked with German armor when I was a volunteer at the Patton Museum (when we still had tanks), rarely did German primer fail and expose the steel beneath it. Fire would destroy it and large rounds striking the vehicle would strip it off. Wear and tear from the crew did not. We had several AFVs that had original paint, and even after 60 years (back then) the red lead was still in place. Very nice work, for a wingnut.

If you want metal tracks that don't need clean up, look into R-Model tracks. The set I used on a Tiger were excellent, and you can also get them with pins to hold them together instead of wire.

I keep some styrene sheets around for a number of reasons. One being that I can make test panels to work on a technique that is new or that I am not quite accomplished at doing. That way if I screw something up I am not ruining the model. I usually keep the panel along with a note on how I did it. I am working on my aircraft skills right now. I think I am better at armor than airplanes.

Great video I've generally built aircraft models but I've often thought it would be good to make a model of a ship, I've been watching a series of youtube videos from mid west models where they are building a 1.200 model of the Titanic and it looks fascinating - maybe you should have a go building that? Best wishes to you from NZ.😉 keep up the good work

A slightly easier putty to use for Zimmerit is the white version 2 part from tamiya. It is maleable for longer which works better and isn't as sticky.

great build =) really enjoyed it. I don't built my models realistic. I try to build them based on realism however ;) So if I want beat up zimmerit on a tank that has no picture of it being beat up I just make it up. Because there probably WAS a beat up tank..there just aren't any photos of it :P prove me wrong on that , rivet counters :D Also. If the colors are somewhat correct almost no camoflauge pattern is unrealistic. Same point as above =)
