They look great but I'm sure their sound is suffering a little from a lack of deadening inside the box. Just need some poly fill like they use in quilting to line the inside. It prevents or at least dampens the reverberation of the sound off the smooth walls bouncing back into the speaker cone. It can really help your bass tones sound better. Also some felt pads on the walnut fronts to prevent them buzzing against the box when you crank the music. Some would say your port exits too harshly into a flat surface too. But I'm not great with speaker port design either
@matthewpeterson3329
@matthewpeterson3329 8 ай бұрын
Agreed. As he closed up the box, I was wishing he had built some internal bracing, cross bracing... anything to eliminate the resonance from the cabinet, as well as poly fill. As for the port, I think its in a decent location, but there is some science behind the length of a port tube, which he omitted all together. However, they are certainly beautiful to look at. Gives me some ideas.

Right on Shaun they look great & sound decent through YT even tho YT compresses the sound. Inwas actually in the process of putting together a "speaker kit" for you that contains 4 - 6.5s woofers, 2 - 1 1/8" soft dome tweeters & 2.5k crossovers for mtm build. The speakers I built for my house using the same components sound amazing, well balanced with excellent imaging & a very nice natural open & airy sound. I really dig your non boxy design although with the added walnut baffle & chamfered edge you will experience whats called baffle step. Its nothing you will notice as a beginner speaker builder. If your ears are happy then they are perfect. It all comes down to what you enjoy & if you have any nay sayers lol just ignore them... You did good..! Heres a tip - when installing drivers into a baffle its very important for the diaphragm of each driver to be at the same height on a narrow baffle flush mounted. Narrow baffle helps to eliminate baffle step with flush mounting and with the diaphragm on the same plain it really helps with phase issues etc. Excellent work along with a beautiful design. ..! If at a later date after a break in period try adding some poly fill to the enclouser. Some will disagree with that but if you take "grill cloth" and cover the port tube on the inside then use about 1# of poly fill per cubic of volume your low end will really warm up with a better presence... "Shaun Boyd Wright" speaker designs

Dang, I should have talked to you before making these! All the stuff with making speakers reminded me a lot of my days working in film/tv. I was big into camera work and cinematography (probably wouldn't know watching my videos now haha) but I remember people going crazy trying to get the absolute best image possible. Then I would watch a short film shot on a camera phone and I would enjoy it more than a lot of the stuff shot on camera worth 100x a cellphone. That being said, I would definitely love to hear these speakers next to a similar set made by someone that knows what they are doing! Thanks man!

@@shaunboydmadethis Wow thats a pretty cool background. Sounds like it was fun. Ive seen short short indie type movies shot on an Iphone lol... Lets just say I was impressed vs something shot with a $$$ camera. Heres the short version of my audio background. Started in custom car audio back in the 90s. Had a small shop that I worked out of doing that as well as custom fiberglass work for installs. Built dashes, door panels, fiberglass speaker pods & subwoofer enclousers. Fixed canoes - pretty much anything that was fiberglass etc. Did a butt ton of repairs for people. A buddy competed in a aound off with an install I did for him. He took 3rd in both SPL & SQ for his power class. He hit 138db with one old school kicker 15😁. That install brought me tons of work..! I then started in custom home audio as well & pro sound. I got to mix for Charlie Daniels once & Diamond Rio. The guys from Diamond Rio were pretty chill down to earth guys. The drummer bought a drum baffle from me made out of plexiglass to help isolate the volume of the drums. I mixed for alot of different bands that came through the casino I worked at. Thats the short 30 yr version. If your speakera sound good to you then they are good. Seems like you might be hooked on speaker building now lol lol lol enjoy my friend its a good hobby that can bring you a good solid income if you decide to go that route & with your "Shaun Boyd Wright" designs you will do well😀 If you decide to add a subwoofer or two for stereo subs may I suggest as a budget build without a budget sound look into the dayton audio 8" classic subwoofers along with the dayton audio SA-100 sub amps. Remember thise templates you made me? Those templates are for sub enclousers for those very subs. I will suggest a .66 - .75 cubic foot enclouser tuned to 30ish hz. If you need help with port tuning let me know I can use winisd or a port calculator for ya. I will also suggest a bent horn, folded horn or T-line enclouser for your large shop in the corner(s)

After milling MDF, mix a solution of 5 parts water to 1 part wood glue and paint it on the cuts with a foam brush. Wait for it to dry and sand the cut with 220 grit and you'll have rock-hard edges. I do this on my arcade cabinets...especially before milling the t-molding slots.

Those boxes are reminiscent of the Ti series by JBL ( the cheapest that I sold was around 2.5k a pop, the most expensive 7.5 K a pop), but then again, they also had very expensive chassis in them. In any case: what helps the sound in those boxes is that are asymmetrical which reduces the standing wave occurrence.

@@shaunboydmadethis well, they complicated it a little more, they also made the box in 3 layers, a wood layer, an anti vibration layer (like the bitumen/fiber anti-vibration mats you find in cars) and another wood layer. They are most probably the best conventional reflex boxes ever build.

Warned the audiophiles, but nothing for high end finishers. Yup, lots more sanding on the filler. Then either a high build 2k primer, or at the very least polyester glazing putty finish sanding to about 600 grit, and a top coat. Getting high end glass smooth finished can double the project time. Look and sound perfectly fine for shop speakers!

Have you tried adding any stuffing/wadding or foam (what ever you call it) to the inside of the box? Worth a try for very little money just to se if you get any benefit. Anyway really nice work. And if you want a better paint finish in future then get some relatively cheap guns. I use devilbis flg 5 and spray them with poly base coat, lots of sanding maybe another coat then lots of sanding then 2 coats of pu 2k gloss then polish until you’re sick of looking at them. By this time you realise how much time you have sank into these “shop speakers” but hey it’s worth it.

Question Picasso. How did you load that stunning art work into the x-carve?
@shaunboydmadethis
@shaunboydmadethis 5 жыл бұрын
That was a process that I'm sure a graphic designer could have done much more efficiently. But I took a picture of the guitar then essentially traced the image by hand in Inkscape to create an SVG that I could then load into Easel.

Those are great looking enclosures, but just a quick comment on painting. As a former painter I think it's a shame that so many woodworkers complain about sanding/painting/finishing. I used to get a lot of flak from carpenters on job sites about how dirty painting was and how they looked down on painters, when it's the painters that put the finishing touches on their work and make them look good! Really, it's just about being diligent about sanding, priming, sanding, painting, rinsing and repeating. With proper pricing and a few more sessions of sanding and reciting you could have had an end product that you wouldn't have to make excuses for.
