My first experience with you Dave was the January 1986 edition of Model Railroader with your Silverton &Telluride. You are a true master and this hobby is all the better because of you.

I so wish I'd come across your channel years ago. As it is I became of fan of you and Bob Hayden back in the 70's when you authored a piece about a little 3x3 HOn30 layout that I think was called the Elk River something. I was hooked and for years enjoyed my own HOn30 modeling, including a couple of the MiniTrix n-scale loco conversions you first created. In fact, I think I remember buying a batch of lichen from you back then... which was beautiful stuff as I remember. Anyway, you may have prompted me once again to do some model making. You are truly an artist and remain a tremendous inspiration. So decades later I get a chance to say thanks.

I used to live near copperopolis, and just picked up one of the Minitrains Forneys and a baggage car, but with the China factory has shut down, and getting the equipment is difficult to get right now

I'm also a former Boy Scout but I'm also a former Devil Pup which is the Marine Corps version of the Boy Scouts ( predate 9 / 11 ) late 1960's to 1974 . you got very lucky with your clamping arrangement those false ceilings are not very sturdy and are Not meant to carry weight so even if you did knock over your lay out that ceiling would have come crashing down right on top of you . otherwise I enjoyed your video , it has given me several ideas for my layout for Ho/ n3 dual gauge with two standard Ho Main lines .

I hate gator board. I didn't realize other people were using it as i did, and used it in a frame made from aluminium window framing parts and sat the gator board as the base, then mounted a layer of cork sheets on top. It lasted quite well for about 2 years, i built a Z gauge layout on top of it, its light and portable, but here is the problem, it really doesn't like heat. Leaving the layout on the back seat of the car one afternoon in the heat, it cooked the plastic gator board and warped it badly, which in turn ruined the Z scale track work. i had to strip the whole layout again down to its base aluminium frame, but this time i used thing marine grade plywood as the base, then compressed foam sheet, then cork tiles (cut and modified) and foam underlay for the rail. This "new" layout is a combination of HOn30, HOn3, HO, and some HOf (z scale mech's) , point to point for the HO/HOn3 track, a loop with switches for the HOn30, and the loop of HOf is raised in "sections" , mostly bridges. what ever you do, if you use gator board, don't let the layout get hot. I am not sure of the temperatures it got to in the back of the car that day, but it only took a couple of hours to ruin a lot of work.

I've never had the problem of ½" Gator Board warping. But then again, it's only been in moderate temps.
