How to build the Sony a6500 into a Mini Cinema Rig that looks like a RED cinema camera. You can use this same setup with the sony a6000, sony a6300, sony a6400 and sony a6600. Using nearly all SmallRig parts, it would really work with any mirrorless camera as long as you have a cage. This video was not sponsored by SmallRig, I bought all these parts myself and truly love their stuff.

I was inspired by this, and did much the same with my own A6500. So, many thanks. The result looks awesome. But I did find some limitations that I had to get around: 1. Even with the lightest of V-mount batteries, this thing is HEAVY, and weighted towards the back. It was fine on a tripod, which is how I plan mainly to use it. But I would probably not want to use it hand-held unless I were Jack Reacher. I have 2 classic video cameras that I can use for that anyway. 2. With the V-Mount battery's covering the back of the camera as you have there, it is nigh-on impossible to use the camera's own LCD or viewfinder. And with the A6500, you need that LCD. There are several touch screen features you need on there, plus the A6500 will not display camera settings on an HDMI external monitor like my Ninja V. I tried having the LCD set horizontally, but that worked only in ideal conditions. In the end, I remounted the battery hanging down below the rig, and as far back as possible to avoid snagging the tripod on a tilt or pan.
@chadwin
@chadwin 2 жыл бұрын
awesome, sounds like you ended up building a really great rig for your a6500! Yes--using v-mount batteries always adds A LOT of weight, however it also adds a lot of stability when doing handheld work. It does make it so you have to balance your tripod head a little bit different but you get used to it. As far as the LCD goes--yes, it definitely sucks having it covered up. What I usually do is just end up scooting the battery back far enough so I can clearly see it and tap on it when needed.

What if you want the nd throttle to use with a Sony 10-18mm lens with the A6600 Does that only come as an adapter for the canon lenses? Loved the video and setup.
@chadwin
@chadwin 4 жыл бұрын
Texas Best Construction unfortunately you can’t use the ND throttle with native Sony lenses. It can only be used to adapt other lenses because it puts space between the lens and the body, whereas Sony lenses can’t do that. You just have to use screw on Nd filters or a matte box with Sony glass

I almost feel like I should make a video when I get all of my parts in since you kinda inspired this for my next gig. I'm rigging up my A7iii, and wanted to have both a Atomos Shinobi and a Aputure F7 on the rig simultaneously. Using the "SmallRig NATO Top Handle HTN2439" on top of their cage (with a NATO rail), I'm gonna use the BUM2448 Arm in the front of the handle like you did for your monitor, then the BSE2346 Monitor mount right behind that in the coldshoe for the Shinobi. Then in the second coldshoe on the end of the handle I'll hang my Rode Wireless GO. I'm using the same baseplate to rig Gold Mount batteries.

Have you had any problems using a follow focus on lenses mounted to a dslr? I seem to be getting slight movement on the lens both up and down when pulling focus on my rig. I've ended up getting a lens support with a strap around the top. Seems to work but is taking up useful space on the 15mm rails.
@chadwin
@chadwin 4 жыл бұрын
Owen Simpson yes, depending on the camera and cage I’m using, the focus motor will shift the lens up and down some. With my A7s it was the worse. But with my Pocket 6k and X-T4 it really doesn’t move. Take a look at your cage and base connections to see where it’s giving and allowing it to move. The lens support might just be necessary for your rig!

Does the SmallHD Micro HDMI to HDMI allow external 4K recording into the Atomos? Always thought those cables were just made for monitoring not recording.
@chadwin
@chadwin 4 жыл бұрын
Kenneth Willim yes, it absolutely does allow 4k recording! I use it all the time with my Ninja V and record in 4k. I can’t think of an hdmi cable I own that won’t allow it even actually
@krazykw93
@krazykw93 4 жыл бұрын
@@chadwin I was looking around my local camera stores and apparently they do sell HDMI cables that don't transmit 4K so I'm a bit sus about off brands atm, but at the same time, not wanting to spend $100 on the Atomos cable which already broke on me...
@chadwin
@chadwin 4 жыл бұрын
Kenneth Willim yeah, I know there are some cables that only do 1080p. But all the ones I’ve ever bought were on amazon and worked with 4k fine. I’ve own a few Atomos cable and they’ve all broke, hate them, not worth the money! SmallHD on the other hand has always been a positive experience, so far anyway

This is very interesting and cool build! I do have a question; why this over a gimbal?
@chadwin
@chadwin 4 жыл бұрын
Mr. & Mrs. Williams I wouldn’t actually choose one over the other. I definitely use a gimbal and the handheld rig. The good thing is, since it has a quick release plate I can pull it off the rails and throw it right on my gimbal.
@MrWayne-cb9tp

You know that was actually one of my worries; taking it all apart to not use the rig. I guess I wasn’t paying close enough attention 🤦🏾‍♂️. I definitely think I want to build one because it looks cool!
@chadwin
@chadwin 4 жыл бұрын
@@MrWayne-cb9tp Yeah, it's definitely nice to have a rig like this for certain bigger client shoots. I do break it down when I need to, just depends on the work I'm doing. It doesn't take much to breakdown for the gimbal, but it will take a few minutes.

I see a lot of 14.8V connections for batteries, are these more for higher end cameras like URSA’s or RED’s that need more power? Is that 8V thing you’re specifying specific to smaller cameras like the sony? I’m just wondering because I’m on an a6500 now, but I plan on going BMPCC 6k in the next 6 months or so, and URSA G2 in like a year, so I wanna buy gear now thats as universal and future proof as it can possibly be, even if it means getting stuff thats a little overkill at the moment

Spicer Productions I use it with the a6500 just to get pro Res, it doesn’t do anything else on that cam. But with my X-T4 it’s amazing 10bit 60FPS 4k. I’d recommend only getting the ninja if it can really improve the image quality with your cam. So might be good for the FS5

With this, I can carry a small pack for a couple of lenses and thats it. life would be so easier. This is the setup I'm def looking for. I have been powering off my cheap Andecine monitors with the sony npf batteries but they just don't last. About how long can you go with this setup? Thanks for this info and I am certainly now a subscriber!

@chadwin 4 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for the sub! Yes, you can find all of the gear used to setup the v-mount battery system in the description of the video. I've used this setup for weddings in the past and it lasts all day. The v-mount batteries are incredible for powering your camera and accessories on long shoots. The Sony NPF batteries are decent, but don't last anywhere near as long.
