Building the ULTIMATE 6x8 DEER BLIND - Framing

Follow along as I build a HUGE deer blind that has all the features I've been wanting since I started hunting years ago! It's a 6x8 blind, and just shy of 7ft tall walls, plenty of room to hunt out of and have the family to hunt in too. The "must haves" for this build were custom windows that were ordered from DeerView Windows, insulated walls to retain heat, elevator brackets to have it off the ground, inside panels to make it feel "finished", and other features I'll add once it's all set up and placed beside the food plot (shelves, hooks, space heater, possible solar, etc).
This build mostly utilizes supplies I had on hand, with the rest being bought at the lumber yard.
Building a blind is easier than you think, you can do this!

How did you build you window framing before they came in did you just build them like 1/2 smaller than window size or what?
@hurstyoutdoors
@hurstyoutdoors 5 ай бұрын
DeerView made it super easy and provided the rough in measurements on their site for each window dimension you need. So while I was waiting for them to arrive, I could keep plugging away at framing.

@@hurstyoutdoors I’ve built stands with deer view windows before but I always waited for them to come in, I’m currently building a 6x7 but worried that ill be a off on my measurements and have to redo framing.

Fixing to build a 6x8 this spring! Last season I just sat on a chair on top of a hill. That was cold mid December.

Just wondering if you had some kind of lumber list that I could go by to build one like this?
@hurstyoutdoors

I modified this site's plans. Instead of a peaked roof did the lean-to style instead. But this lumber list will get you right where you need to be..any extra you can use it for another project! myoutdoorplans.com/hunting/6x8-deer-blind-plans/

Quick question, How far did you put the bottom of the windows from the floor? I'm in the process of building a deer blind.

If I remember right it was 34in.. but if I had to do it over again I would have done like 36 to 38 in. Hope that helps!

I’m looking to build one onto the side of a hill. I’m thinking heavy posts on the high side and concrete footers on the low side that sits on the hill.

Sounds like a sweet plan. Don't know how steep the hill is but should work great, will make for a great comfortable view!

How did you do your door? I am building the same size and not sure if I should build or buy one., buying one im guessing is going to be much more spendy
@hurstyoutdoors
@hurstyoutdoors 6 ай бұрын
Just framed the door with 2x4s and then used the plywood for the exterior, painted, then mounted it with door hinges. Super cheap and easy. Can use some weatherproofing strips with whatever extra space you have to seal out bugs. Buying one would definitely add some cost and then you would have to make sure you framed it correctly for rough opening.

Not sure if you have mentioned in any of your videos where you are located but just wondering how the deerview slider window held up in cold weather, did tracks freeze up at all? Also did the flip up side windows keep rain completely out when secured shut? Looking at getting both those style of windows
@hurstyoutdoors
@hurstyoutdoors 8 ай бұрын
Hey thanks for reaching out, I'm located in Michigan. Windows have held up great, with the side windows being on the inside, haven't had a problem with rain getting in since they are recessed in from the frame and angled a tad bit to have water run off. Sliders have been great too...strongly recommend them.

@Hursty Outdoors hey thanks a lot. 1 question. Why not just use the OSB for the walls too I'd you gotta paint it anyway? I was just looking at plywood and dang it's really expensive.
@hurstyoutdoors
@hurstyoutdoors Жыл бұрын
@@brandonyoung7760You could roll OSB, but make sure that thing is covered in paint then. Only thing I think of is the OSB swelling up when it gets wet, plywood just seems more forgiving when it comes to that...but try it out man! With a bunch of paint on it you might be totally fine.

Is all this treated lumber?
@hurstyoutdoors
@hurstyoutdoors 7 ай бұрын
The only treated lumber would be the 2x6 floor joists since they are exposed to the elements (and the 4x4 legs when it's time to set it in place). Everything else was standard, for the plywood walls I did two thick coats of exterior paint to seal the wood from the elements, it's worked great. Have a good one.

Hey what are the measurements on the windows
@hurstyoutdoors
@hurstyoutdoors 8 ай бұрын
The front window was for a 60x12in horizontal slider, and the side windows are for 30x12in hinge windows all from DeerView. DeerView on their site has all the measurements you can customize and the rough in size for them too.

Awesome build! Are the floor joists 2x4? How thick is the plywood?
@hurstyoutdoors
@hurstyoutdoors Жыл бұрын
Thanks! Floor joists are 2x6's, and for the floor I decided on using 1/2" OSB. With 16" on center joists makes it's totally fine for supporting weight.

Are the walls 2x4 or 2x3 studs?
@hurstyoutdoors
@hurstyoutdoors Жыл бұрын
2x4s..you could roll 2x3 if you wanted it to be lighter, I preferred 2x4 for the strength and room between studs for insulation.

The deer will not be fooled...you will be easy to spot...way too many openings at the same time...white chairs will pick up light...I keep only one window open at a time and I use no glass...all windows are covered with wood...the inside is painted black, my chair is black,, I wear all black and it becomes a shadow box...I have had deer within 10 feet and they do not see me...

Hey to each their own, I ended up painting the inside black after I got it out there. Got a big 10pt and a 8pt this hunting season. My daughter got her first deer out of it too...I'd say it worked out great.
