As an engineer who draws in CAD, creates programs, operates waterjets, and regularly fixes and maintains them, I have the upmost respect for anyone who builds any sort of CNC device from scratch. Even installing a new machine can be a massive task. I like to think of myself as a fairly intelligent person, but I'm always blown away by your brilliance and how articulate you are. Bravo!

I started using SolidWorks years ago in my small startup design and manufacturing business. I ended up with a room full of engineers, each with their own SW license, by the time I sold my business last year. I can honestly say I never could have had the level of success I did without SolidWorks, their support, and training. After six months of sitting on my behind watching KZfaq I'm starting to get ideas again. I think it's almost time to get a fresh license and start the process all over again. I typically feel that combo tools are a tool that gets to do everything poorly, but, they're a reality of a small home shop with a non-production-level budget. Everything wood is bad for everything metal, everything metal is bad for everything wood. Etc. And it's true, if you're churning out a product line. But it looks like you've minimized the annoyances and built a 95% solution that's going to need a little maintenance but otherwise can do the job.

First of all, wow. On another account, I've followed your channel from seeing you in what looked like a tiny shed surrounded by tools on flip top carts and vacuum cleaner motors. Now, holy crap, you're building your own industrial-sized CNC and you mounted a freaking plasma torch on it, and managed to get the precision solid enough to cut a logo into a pipe. That not amazing, it's astonishing, to me, anyway. Just wow.

Great video and great project. I would like to suggest that you add a home position switch on your fence rail and a home button feature in your menu. This will position your fence automatically, eliminating having to re-calibrate the fence distance from the blade after you move your fence manually. It is an awesome project congratulations.

Congrats on the new job. I knew you moved but somehow missed it was for work. This CNC is sick. I have a Plasma CNC and 2 router based CNC’s, but this is next level. Does the plasma have torch height control? I wasn’t looking close enough to tell. But having a 4th access is insane. Now you need some welding and Powdercoating equipment. Your quickly outgrowing your shop. 🤣

I would love to see in depth Solid Works tutorials from you that are live creations of simple solutions, that dive into the "why" of design. Most CAD tutorials are specific in the features they are teaching, rather than focusing on methodology, thought process, considerations, etc... for actually designing something. I feel like your down to earth way of explaining things would make for really interesting instructional design videos. Thanks for the great content.

My last attempt at buying a CAD app was with ProE, and it was an utter diaster. And expensive. I can't wait to try Solidworks via your link!
