Very impressed that you admitted and showed your mistakes as well as the shortcuts you were willing to take to get the bike ready. Obviously we know you wouldn’t normally do things like shave the nikasil, weld the piston, etc. But I think it’s cool that you owned it and didn’t hide it. That’s why you’re one of the best!

Thank you so much for these comments; you guys are awesome, seriously. Information on shortcuts and techniques/stories of what people did in a pinch can be scarce as I found out when I was looking for info in the midst of my problems with this 250R. People really don't seem to like to admit shortcuts or mistakes. I hope that these videos can help people when they come across a similar situation.

Hey Mike, one last comment here at the end. NO SHAME BROTHER! Every single racer who ever lived going back to the dawn of racing of any vehicle ever raced has patched up, modified, harbored, band-aided, fabbed, refabbed, refabbed again, and duct taped their machine in a pinch to get her across the finish line in any place, in any case. Loved watching you improvise, adapt and overcome. GREAT SHOW! Plenty of tme now to order a new piston, send out the head for re-lining and adjusting gear reatio and tune for a reliable, top of the line winner!

Man, I felt that struggle! Recently I have been pushing hard to get my dirt bike running before the snow arrives. It's been in pieces needing a new head, valves, and a piston for the last 12 months. KTM parts are back ordered like you wouldn't believe. Anyway after finally having all the parts and getting the engine back together for the first time since last fall, I had the new piston pin seize in the rod 5 minutes into the first test ride. So I took it home are tore it down again. I decided to put the old piston back in to confirm that the new piston was the issue. Then, during re-assembly the timing chain tensioner threads decided strip out (despite using a torque wrench) halting progress for yet another week. All I've been doing is tearing this engine down and putting it back together over and over for the last several weeks. Sadly, before I could get it going I ended up having knee surgery and had to put the bike away for yet another winter in pieces. It's been painful to say the least. Anyway, it was good to see you get a win, it made me smile! Great video as always!

Man, sounds like you're getting put through the ringer with that KTM. I guarantee you're learning a lot doing that and dealing with abnormal problems. I currently own and built my yamaha raptor 770cc it even has a plus 3mm intake valves and plus 2mm exhaust valves 105.5mm cylinder and piston plus 5mm stroker crankshaft efi controller with many other things. I prefer 23x7 up front and 22 inch rear tires plus its geared to the moon. Still hits the rev limiter on top. 😅 thanks for the content awesome builds, and fun to watch. I also modded my daughter's Yamaha blaster, stock was around 55mph or so, now it tops out at around 70mph. Its at the limits of pump gas for compression, full port n polish even worked over the transfer ports. 34mm intake and mikuni 34mm carb, tapped with the oil injection. Its geared up on the front sprocket and went a little smaller size out back. Also went with 23x7 up front and 22 inch tires out Back. In a drag race for two high line pole lengths it will eat a Polaris scrambler 400 2-stroke, until it runs out on top. My daughter absolutely loves riding. She is 20 years old. I didn't want her riding a big heavy atv like a Polaris sportsman 500 that weighs around 800 pounds. To me thats way more dangerous of she was to roll over. 320 pounds wet weight blaster is easier to kick off from a roll over. I also freed the intake and exhaust on the blaster. Been thinking about maybe getting another blaster frame to build that YZ500 yamaha blaster. Hmmm 😉

You should have it re nickel celled again Michael. It will work by honing it out to cross hatch etch it inside the cylinder bore good. That's the main part of it. After you hand sand it really good.

One big thing about that piston skirt shaving is to bring it up to top Dead center first. T hen use A tool called A awl scribe. To score the outline of that area with them go over it with sharpie marker. I always make two lines the main cut line and what's called A over kill line for lead way.
@johnhicks735
@johnhicks735 7 ай бұрын
That gives you room to work with and I highly recommend practicing on A old one first.,or A cheap new one. Cause your right about one part of it you really shouldn't try to.,or can't put back what's been cut off to get the right compression stroke in that engine. I highly recommend changing it out with the exact piston to with A new one again. As A fresh rebuild. Just remember about the top dead center trick tip first. Then scribe it out and double line mark it. And take some where to have it lathe cut down to size. Leave both lines on it gives you lead way to. For more compression and power stroke that way doing like that to out of the piston. Without totally ruining it. That other piston is off balance and Intrude.,or I call it un- trude. That's what's causing the noise and vibration to.

Dude... I had a KE125 as a first bike and the piston skirt busted. Big ol chunk came out and got jammed in the bottom end bearing. I cleaned it out put it back together and it ran! The cracking skirt became a running theme on this bike. I just kept clearing it out and slapping it back together. (Like every day!!!) By the end it looked like a formula 1 piston. The skirt came up to the bottom ring so it was partially floating... This is a rotary valve intake motor so that wasn't an issue. The ENTIRE exhaust port being open to the crankcase also wasn't an issue surprisingly enough. The damn thing ran better that way I think! I ended up selling it running, with a quarter piston. Also if your rod was too short you'd be low on your deck height. so odds are your crank is stroked out excessively. Not sure if you ordered a stroker crank... You got one now though so stack up some base gaskets and open up the bottom of those ports! (Do that before replating...) Maybe your onto something, more CC's fo-sho!

Michael, I have to admit, I'm like alot of the other guys that feel like you should have kept the 250r in it's MX form. But this is your channel, and YOUR quad, and you wanted a drag bike. So, I respect that! And frankly, it's a SWEET looking machine!!! The motor itself is really a work of art! I've built some really nice XC race yfz's and 450r's in the 20+ years I've been riding and racing quads. But I've never done anything that comes anywhere even close to your 250r! That bike is just MEAN AF LOOKIN!!! Dude, the sound of your voice twice in this video is ABSOLUTELY PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1. When you first romped on it, and felt the torque that bike puts out, you were so excited!! You sounded like you just might piss yourself!! LOL! 2. At about 1:09 you wound it out, and started grabbing for the front brakes, which weren't there anymore! And for a split second you thought you were either going to have to hit the "eject" button, or you might be going for a swim in that creek! Hysterical, only b/c you didn't wad it up!! Awesome video Sabo!!

Man, with all the money you have spent on quads you could have gotten a used LRD aluminum frame to build a drag bike. It is a lighter frame, then you could have still had the m309… imagine how sweet that would have been that to have 2 R’a, one for riding around with the guys and one that would have been a pure drag machine

I literally never did a break in. I build em and rip em instantly every time, and thus far, I've never once had anything go wrong.

I cant say this for every motor but many in history have uncovered the exhaust port on full top stroke. On a Merc outboard some do and some dont but it doesn't change performance much oddly enough. It can be just as likely to help stuff the case when the pipe echos back. Im sure these R motors have been dynoed enough over the decades to know what the verdict is.

We all make mistakes, it’s all about how we can be men and admit them and not be too embarrassed or ashamed or full of pride. I swear we would get along so well and could really build some stuff! Keep up the good content. Life long follower you have made me my friend!

Finishing motors at the track has always ended up in peril for me. I blew up a 400 Yamaha that I just put the 440 kit in, because of rod stretch. It ran perfect until I really got on it and then the inevitable bog. It never made a bad sound though

I had a similar experience with my 89 Blaster, my sleeve had a crack in the same exact spot on the transfer port and it somehow has ran for over 8 years on the same sleeve no problem!😂

I think a lot of times, we worry about stuff like that, but its not actually as serious as we think. But then again, it could totally tank an engine 😂
