Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Thank you for being here with us for cabin life, van life and all the in between!

I can't tell you how much I enjoy and look forward to your videos. My husband knows that at 9:30 am on Sunday mornings, I have my coffee and I am set to watch "my girls" while he takes our 16 year old puppy for his walk. When I was 15, my mother gifted me with my first set of power tools and I was thrilled. Now at 60, I am living vicariously through you both, living your best lives, with your dogs and each other. You are showing that you truly know what's important in life and to be joyous about it. I love you both!!!

Ladies, if I could write this privately I would. This morning was really hard for me, I lost my mother last night. I waited until this afternoon to watch your video. I just want to say Thank You! I have been watching you for several years now and at times commented but you both may never realize how much you mean to so many of us. Your inspiration allows me to keep going on my own projects and gardens. I may never have all that you do but what I do means so much. Today's video just help remind me of all the fun my family had with Mother fishing, swimming, and picnicking. So the project may go on hold so I can enjoy the summer with family and friends in remembrance of my Mother. One of a kind special lady. With much love and respect, Thank you

Just want to say it’s okay to feel whatever you feel and there’s no pressure to be grateful or appreciative immediately, being angry and upset and irritated etc it’s totally okay (if that happens) and totally normal and healthy, virtually nobody experiences grief in a cartoonishly serene and cinematic postcard coffee table psychology perfect way, it’s much more sad, enraging, and can feel really unfair, because it is. The gratitude and appreciation feelings will come because of course they’re there, but at first, in response to losing someone, negative emotions are the healthiest and most appropriate emotional states to experience, they have a time and place and death is absolutely the right time for those, I apologise if this was not okay, and I hope I didn’t upset you, I just wish someone could have told me this. But I had to learn it. Sending you all the love in the world, it’s really beautiful that you loved her so much. I’m glad she had you ❤

Probably a good idea to switch out that Trolling motor wood mount to an Aluminum material made into whateverr shape and bolted onto the raft and then you can clamp the Trolling Motor to that. Pretty cool raft. Keep life preservers on board. Every vessel needs them and the life saver rings.

If the grain of the mount for the motor was running vertical instead of horizontal, it would not have broken. The grain orientation is why the board broke. Just mount the board vertical and with carriage bolts and it will suffice for the trolling motor.

Love this project! I'm making a couple of recommendations just to guarantee a good experience: Please add strings of solar lights, connecting the posts. The post lights alone will not be enough for others to see you easily (plus, we know solar lights don't all last at the same rate, so more lights for safety); Add at least 2 oars, maybe 4, in case you have issues with the motor; Lastly, add drop down rails for your grill. It is easy to bump something like that, especially with many people moving around on the platform. Enjoy that beautiful build 🎉

Fishing pole holders? Outdoor cushions would be a plus. A food prep table?- Solar panel and fridge/freezer? I mean if you want to spend time a Porta potty (in a little tent thing to put up as needed). A depth sounder so you know how deep it is. A screen canopy to avoid the midges and mosquitos.. My ideas to add lol

Ladies, you are amazing! Safety comes first; it's always better to have something and not need it than to need something and not have it. I suggest you install oar mounts and store a set of long oars on your raft in case of problems. Remember, the more weight you put on the raft, including people, the more strain there is on the trolling motor. This includes going against the current. Those are the only suggestions I have. Again, while I'm in my 60s, I am amazed at the projects you two have taken on and completed. You blow me away from week to week. Take care.

My wife and I live on a small lake in rural Washington State. There is another couple who live on the lake who built a motorized raft very similar to yours that attaches to their dock when they aren't using it to cruise the lake. The lake is small (only about 65 acres) so it is electric motors only. We built a float dock two years ago that came in a kit that uses the same float boxes you have. It worked out very well. I love seeing your projects come to life from two really creative minds like yours. Enjoy that lake and I will keep watching every Sunday!

Trolling motor tips: 1. Get a back up battery. 2. Mount a solar charger up on top of one of the posts. Put Anderson quick connects to unhook and or change from one battery to the other. Also, quick connects to the solar charger. (Btw, I'd use no less than a 100W solar panel)3. the board you broke that holds the trolling motor on the raft, is called the transom. Get some steel, and cover both mounting sides with the steel, that insures no broke boards, and if they do, you won't loose the trolling motor. 4. Speaking of loosing the trolling motor, Get a piece of rope or small cable to catch it should it come loose. I'd also wire in a small volt meter to keep you informed as the how much battery life is left in your battery.
@mmsmits2868
@mmsmits2868 7 күн бұрын
That looks like so much fun! There are a ton of things you can add to the raft (I'm assuming you're doing solar panels regardless), but personally, I'd keep it simple. It's a raft, not a gin palace. You don't want to spend all your time maintaining your raft, after all. Can't wait to see what comes next! Have a great week! ~Maarten

Reducing the visibility of the pontoons and finishing the ends of the deck boards make the a no-brainer. And the taped out area? Hot tub - no doubt. Great project! Can't wait to see the finished tiny house on the lake! One suggestion for your cooler/refrigerator; add hinges to the cover and raise the cooler so that the top of the lid is level with the top of the bench or perhaps a half inch lower. That way you can have the lid open and then have easier access to the cooler. Another idea would be to attach the lid of the cooler to the lid of the lid of the compartment so that is opens with the compartment lid(unfortunately this means removing the hinges from the cooler). Depending on the size of the cooler, this would give you a bit of extra storage under the cooler for smaller, flatter items(cutting boards, utensils, etc.). For those extended trips on the lake, screens would be a great thing to help minimize the bug situation for overnight trips! Keep on keeping on!!

Idea Time! Build a ramp that allows the girls to jump into the water and then walk up the ramp onto the platform. This way they can enjoy the floating barge and the water! The ramp should be a gentle angle with some form of traction covering so its not slippery. Make it fold up so it's only in the water when needed. I envision Bella or Izzy taking a wild leap into the water and you both struggling to get them back onto the platform. A ramp solves that! I am 99% sure what you have built is considered a boat and if your area requires registration of water craft you'll need to go through the process of titling, registration and so on. You may need to do things like provide life vests for the max number of passengers, something you should do anyway. That doesn't mean you have to wear them it means you have to know where they are and have access to them at all times. More details! Not only does the anchor chain need to be long enough to get to the bottom it needs to be long enough to lay around 20 meters or chain on the bottom plus the chain from your party barge to the bottom plus extra just in case. It's not just the anchor that does the work but the weight of the chain that keeps you in a location but allows for waves/wake etc. You probably will want to add a hand cranked anchor winch and a box to keep the chain and anchor inside. For the battery add a small solar panel on one of your corner posts, the kind you see on small highway signs or home/business lighting. One of those will keep the battery charged and no work for you both. Can you tell I grew up around boats and did a lot of boating well into my 30's?

I think it could be cool if you got some seat cushions that were also rated as flotation devices, and then attach them to the top of the bench seating with velcro strips. That could come in handy in emergencies.

I am almost lost for words. You two are amazing, the amount of design and thought that went into building that, the structure with all that wood must make it very heavy. I thought you would have to call “sea rescue” when the motor wasn't working (joke). What are you going to amaze me with next week? Love Mike. ❤❤

Hmmm....While 1 trolling motor might get the job done in the calm, it might be more fun and more maneuverable with 2! That way, you can pivot by thrusting in opposite directions. It would be cool to see how you guys would fabricate a steering rack and throttle set up to make it all work! Might as well over engineer it a little more! Think about situations where some high winds could suddenly appear. You might need to get back home quickly or have enough thrust to get you there in a wind. Especially if you plan on putting lots of tall stuff on top of it. Also, why did you use anchor chain as opposed to rope? Rope would be much lighter, easier to use and store. Your going to need 2 anchors BTW. You may as well figure out where to mount some beefy cleats. There will come a time when you’re going to need to tie it off to something. Get some decent sized fenders to put between. You can make a cool rack to store them in for quick and easy access. You’ll need 3 cleats on both the port and starboard side for tying off. 2 ropes for each side is good to have on hand. Put some matching cleats on the end of your other dock to tie off to. Recommend using spring lines to tie off properly. Does anyone else use the lake? If so, this will make it easier for other boats to tie off to you. Not sure what the laws are in CAN for boating at night, but you might need some navigation lights red/green and an Anchor light to be legal.

I'd add some life preservers/jackets, fire extinguisher, oars for if the motor fails and loads of comfy seating - perhaps a bed under cover for overnight stays. Longer chain for the anchor as well!

Wow you built a wooden raft so cool. Where are the fishing poles? There must be so many northern pike in the lake. Catching cleaning and cooking right on the raft!! Swimming from the raft. Reading a book on the raft. Lying down on the floor looking at the sky. I could not imagine anything much cooler. I love going to the boundary water for fishing, camping, hiking and portaging for 3-6 days. Limited or no bars and the poor kids go into social media withdrawal!! Great build and great video Cya next thyme, Steven

As with all boats, don't forget life jackets for yourselves, Izzy and Bella. Also take some paddles in case you have a problem with the motor. It may take a lot of effort to get the raft back to shore if there is a strong wind against you. Motors have a mind of their own and like to quit in emergencies.

Awesome job you 2❤. Lovely idea. You could use a few layers of plywood screwed together for the motor to mount to. A canopy with solar panels to charge the battery and a safety chain on the motor so it doesn't sink incase something happens.

When I was really young(about 8 to 11) my Mom dated a guy who had a cottage on Lake Muskoka for a few years. We had a raft just like that but without all the bells and whistles. The cottage was in a bay called packers bay but it was known locally as millionaires bay. Some of out neighbors included Mr. Christie from the cookie maker and Wilson pop who owned half the bay. Our raft was powered from a 3.5 horsepower Evinrude motor, it was perfect for trolling fishing. Six people could fish at once and never get our lines tangles . I'm in my mid 50's now and hadn't thought about it in years, thank you for the memory!

It was so fun to see what you’ve done to your raft. It brings back many memories from the 1960s in Michigan on a 80 acre lake where we had a cottage. My dad had a float like that and he put a railing across the back of it, attached a slow motor below that, and we named it “Pokey”! So we used it to swim out to during the day while it was anchored in front, but then at night or on the weekends he would pull up the anchor and they would put aluminum lawn chairs on the raft (without any railing, except by the motor) , and we would slowly meander around the lake, waving at everyone! His invention was before pontoons were ever developed, as far as I know. They would even fish off it at night (in the dark) by hanging a lantern out and catching trout with canned corn. They were very successful. It will be fun to see what you’re going to do. Note: those aluminum chairs did NOT hold up well and you had to be very careful sitting in them! LOL!

You should make under floor storage. Just get a few more black totes without the lids. Flip them right side up on top of a few of the inner totes cut off extra then make the wood deck on top of it a hinge door. You could even use the lids by screwing them to the under side of the deck hinge doors so that they close over the sink in bins to water proof them from rain and splash.you can also hang a movable shade cloth between your side cables for full or partial coverage. You could probably use something as simple as shower rings to make slideable.
