Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. Javex totally kills black mold. So does peroxide if you put the wood in the sun then spray it with food grade hydrogen peroxide. I would just use the bleach though. Bleach, then stack it where it will stay dry and stack in so air can move around it, in a criss/cross pattern. Salvaged.

Hey Crystal and Jaz be careful when doing the demolition of the cabin. Black mold isn't something to mess with without proper PPE equipment... Don't want you both to be sick. Can't wait to see the next project. Love the beautiful view. Build house/cabin/yurt/treehouse on higher ground and away from flood zone. Be safe!

Agreed.. Friends of mine had to move because of black mold.. They even spent time in the hospital because of respiratory infections.. Yipes!

My suggestion is an A-frame cabin with a large front deck and a window wall looking out at the lake. An A-frame is the least expensive type of house, because you don't have walls except on the ends, the rest is roof and floor. I would highly suggest a finished floor about 4 or 5 feet above the lake level. A 24x32 main floor with a 24(minus pitch of the roof)x12 loft bedroom. You get a 12x12 kitchen and hallway, plus a 12x12 bathroom with storage under the stairs to the loft (with an 8' ceiling height), and great room of 24x20 feet. 2x12 floor joists, 2x6 rafters, you get R-30 in the floors and R-19 in the ceiling. 2x6 end walls and insulated double-pane windows and sliding glass doors. Put the whole house up on 3 rows of 8x8 posts @ 8' O/C, and double 2x12 beams on both sides of the posts. (The beams fit into notches on the 8x8s). 3/4" tongue and groove plywood floors. Open rafters above the great room at 2' above the loft's floor.

My wife had a minor stroke a few years back. Ever since then, she gets a little weepy when something tugs her heart strings. One of those is at the end of your videos, when "We love you pack" barks out. It seems only fitting that I buy her some pack merch to make sure she knows she's formally a member of The Pack, I showed her your merch and the end of your latest video. She, predictably, cried and then chose the blue Bella & Izzy shirt. Thank you for the occasional tears of joy you bring to our home every week.

I visited Nova Scotia this past summer. Stayed at Keji and travelled around the interior lakes. I can see what you two love about the area, it's lovely. I lost my wife of over 20 years to cancer two years ago. She spent much of her childhood down there, made me feel a little closer to her again. You two remind me of our early years, we gutted and refinished our home in Ontario, something we fondly reminisced on lots as we aged :)

THATS GOOD KNOTTY PINE! For the moldy boards, get some chlorine and a pump sprayer. Put the chlorine in the sprayer and pump it up. Lay the boards out on a flat surface mold side up. Spray chlorine on generously and allow to dry. The chlorine and sun will kill the mold spores. Then you can reuse the wood. Slainte!

I'd personally build a really nice tree house lodge which will be out the flood zone and also give you a great view out over the lake and woodland. It would also make a great guest cabin. Use some of the salvageable wood in the new build to honour the previous cabin especially the stove and stove pipe. Love the minesweeper lifering my grandfather served on minesweepers in the Royal Navy during WW2 and was on North Atlantic convoy duty between Liverpool UK and New Foundland

I love the idea of a raised deck area, like 10ft up, with room for a BBQ, eating area, sun bathing/yoga, Adirondack lounge space, partially covered for shade, beautiful Lookout in the winter, well every season.

2cents from an Architect/Construction Manager: tear the cabin down, extend the existing foundations 3-4 feet about the high flood plain and rebuild. Ensure the space under the floor joists is sealed from moisture and you'll have a cabin that has an elevated view of the area without spending money/energy on a new foundation at a new location. Permiting (if applicable) would be easier to rebuild existing vs new construction.

Love the sound of the river. I would definitely do a cabin on stilts. I live in Oklahoma and lots of homes are built on stilts around our lakes. When there isn’t flooding they make a great covered patio area .

If you're not looking to build another cabin, maybe repurpose that foundation and build a simple boathouse type structure for watercraft (canoes, kayaks, jet skis, etc). Dig it out a bit, lay down crushed stone, cut out a wider section of the foundation wall for more access than that existing door provides. Think something like a garage type structure design, but smaller, not as tall, with barn like doors. So many possibilities.

Hi, I'm Leti from Brasil. There's a type of building called palafita, which is what people do in the Amazon where it's flooded half the year. Look it up. That way you could keep the location of the cabin and the view without worrying about getting flooded over.

The Pinewood that you pulled off the walls can be sent through a planer if you want to save it. It would clean up pretty nice on the minimal amount of wood removal and after drying it would probably be pretty good with minimal pieces to be thrown away or burned

Get yourself a tool for that lumber you plan to salvage. It's called a De-Nailer, and yes it's a real thing. It's like an air nailer, except uses air to punch nails back out to the direction it came from. Be safe and wear safety glasses, or better yet a face shield as the nails come out with a decent amount of speed and energy. Personally, I use a lid on a 5 gal pail with about a 3 inch hole, and shoot the nail into the hole. Not much chance the nail will make it back out of the hole. At the end of the day, all of your nails are all picked up and in one place. The tool should only cost you a hundred-ish dollars. About 40 minutes of air de-nailing equals all day by hand. You ladies are amazing, and I appreciate that you are bringing us along on your journey.

Use the foundation for a big Deck made of composite deck material and stainless hardware. Set it up for a sun drenched play area during the Summers, including cooking, and make everything supporting the fun, easy to unhook and remove when the threats arise. And get GOOD Black Mold remediation masks and gloves for the demolition and handling. And there's very little that should be reused.

The best approach would be to dismantle the cabin and pile what's salvageable. Then, since you have the the tractor, clear site and establish a solid clay pad that's at least three meters above the present level of the land on which the cabin now stands.

Relocate the cabin to higher ground maybe the site of the outhouse, take some of the trees down to reveal the amazing view. ❤❤ Building a tower part to the new cabin would give you incredible views.

Get a planer and salvage as much wood as you can; just because it’s wet a little bit got some bad spots doesn’t mean that you can’t plane it down to the good stuff, seal it and use it for something also allows you to strip down refinish it it however you want!

The clock was sold when I was a kid. You would go in the store and there were all different shapes and sizes to choose from. We had one and my parents bought several as gifts. I am glad many wanted the clock!

You could finish the foundation wall with plumbing inlet and outlet, to convert it to a seasonal pool that has water pumped from the lake and then drained back into the lake before winter.

Anything wet, moldy or broken, BURN. Remove all the burnable crap and lite it up.. Check the foundation with a professional. Then build the foundation up higher so you can use the under-house for real storage. Tractor, mini excavator, etc. Maybe add to it so you can also park your truck underneath. Just make sure everything under the house is mobile in case it has to be moved to higher ground. Take your time and utilize a professional to design your new house and where everything on the property needs to go so you are doing it once and the aesthetics are exactly what you want.... DO NOT BE IN A RUSH TO BUILD!!!!! Things change a lot and making everything about the house right and the property right is key to a wonderful home.

After you strip the useful parts of the cabin out if you are genuinely interested in "burning it down" I suggest reaching out to your local volunteer fire department, not only will they help keep you and the rest of your beautiful property safe, I'm sure they would LOVE the opportunity for training with a live structure fire in a controlled setting. In my rural area of NS it's a common occurrence to help the local department!

I have a tool suggestion for you. A planer, not a hand planer but an actual table top or shop planer. Dewalt makes a nice one. Your milled lumber and now reclaimed stuff from the new cabin would be so pretty and smooth after being run through a planer. Your wood working skills and ability to create things with nicer looking wood would really take a leap forward as well. I'm a cabinet maker and kitchen designer/builder, I love the types of projects you two get into and have binged your channel since I found you. Dream big and just go for it, can't wait to see what you do next.

I've been waiting to get my The Pack hat for what seems like forever. I almost got one made just for me and then boom......I have one one the way simple as pie. Love you girls. Can't wait to see what you decide to do with cabin foundation once everything is salvaged, given away or repurposed in the new works. It will be fun and rewarding. I'm glad to see you taking it on with gusto as usual. At 71 I think in 20 year terms, since my dad is is 91 and living on his own 2 acre place . At your age, I was thinking at least 75 - 100 years in the future when it came to my buildings. Now, after 50 years of designing, building and watching my work age over the years, the one thing I can say is that, putting the right materials, in the right place, at the right price is one of the key things to think of first. Placing materials yourself, that you can afford, that will do the job for 75-100 years with the right design is where I still start my work today. Thankfully I can still afford to do so when so many cannot. You two are as lucky as I am, so think hard and long about your impact on that beautiful landscape. They to keep it small and have it blend into the land. I am taken back to Frank Lloyd Wright's famous house Falling Water's built over a river and a waterfall, not next to it. Your land is that good, maybe without the waterfall!. You don't have to be Frank to do it exactly the way you want it to be. That place is your oyster. It's just waiting to make you a pearl of a place to live well on and for the generations that follow. II's also nice to know you can't really mess it up. You know that place is so wonderful no one could mess it up. All you have to do is make it yours - just like you did the first 10 ACRES - WHICH TURNED OUT BEAUTIFUL. No wonder you have those huge smiles on your face!

Save any pressure-treated lumber, but burn the rest. You don't want a bunch of black mold spores in any new construction, even if the wood is not moldy. That's not a river. It's a creek. Have you got a topographic map of your new property? That can be a VERY cheap way to find a new cabin site with good elevation. You can always cut a few trees or build it two story to get a good lake view. You will need to cut some trees anyway to get construction equipment and supplies there.

I bought an old cabin and the week after settlement I had the fire brigade come and use it for training purposes for their crew. After they were finished they happily burned it down for me. They were very grateful because they don’t get the chance to have a real house to practice their breathing apparatus techniques while the place is actually burning. There was nothing redeemable in my place and they were welcome to it. Gave me a new slate on which to build my dream home on.

Raised patio area with partial roof and an outdoor kitchen (including grill, brick oven, and sink)! Then you could do little tiny cabins in the wooded area for sleeping! Also, you need at least one treehouse on either of your properties IMO

This is such a great adventure. I’m not guessing what you might do with this new 10 acre package, because I would rather be surprised. Sunday is now my favourite day, to watch you, The Pack, Max and Occy, Tyler and Todd, Emon and Bec, and Kinging It! However, showing your gorgeous water frontage, and rushing river, gives me an idea I would like to suggest. If you were to take videos of the river, particularly, with sound, it could be another stream (excuse the pun) of income. Depending upon the occasion, my television has videos of running water, Christmas fireplaces, ocean waves, storms, etc, etc, all from KZfaq. Since I live alone, and work from home, it’s great company. I prefer the crackling fire, or rushing water sounds to accompanying music. Just a thought girls, but a tri-pod, and a camera doesn’t need a babysitter. I LOVE everything you do, so you really don’t need me to tell you your business. Thanks for everything.❤️

"About the siding inside the cabin, it looks to me like a great excuse to buy a planer. Remove all the nails, send it through a planer, and get rid of the varnish and stains on the back side. That would be some really nice material to get creative with. Love you guys, stay safe and warm."

@@Vanwives I agree with Bruce. First treat the wood for black mold with the bleach - and you might stack it and tent it in heavy plastic to fumigate it. Then you can send it through the planer. So next on the tool list is a planer and caliper... You'll need to measure the planed boards to that they are the same thickness. Takes a bit of work but worth it. With the varnish off - you can start your own patina journey.

In the old days they used plastic sheets to prevent moisture getting in. However when the cabin is warmer on the inside than outside it sweats which is why you have mild on the back of th wood and loads of moisture round the edges. Save what you can and start again building your dream home. Keep living the dream. from our pack to yours

Wow What a beautiful property, I had been wondering just how nice of neighbors you had letting Swim in their lake. The water logged cabin, any wood that is mold effected can be washed with bleach to kill the mold and left to dry. Don't make any plans on what you doing until you have the house completely stripped down to the studs on the whole inside. Then you can inspect for rot and see how the outside sheathing has fared. If a majority of the framing is solid you have many options. Raise the whole thing up on stilts and have a Venice approach to the water. Strip all the sheathing off and lift the house up and put it sleds and drag it to where you want it, preferably with an already made for foundation waiting for it. Disassemble the house in section and move walls and components separately. If you do move it from it's current location you certainly could put a gazebo there in it's stead. Or build a boat house with a channel to the lake, "lemons" to boat house.

I really appreciate you saving what you can! Burning down any structure comes from a place of privilege, and there’s a lack of respect for the environment and existing resources. A lot of time and energy goes into making windows, milling wood, manufacturing products etc. When looking at the cost of buying that item new you can really appreciate the value of recycling materials. and being as remote as you are it is wise to save and use what you can!

Have you thought about Two 40 Foot Containers as a new Cabin structure, elevated on a foundation. Space them apart and utilize a 20 x 40 interior (patio. kitchen, living room area) with a large roof structure over both units. Cut openings for bedrooms and windows, or use one side for storage, solar, batteries and other utilities. You could even build a 2nd story on the containers as the elevated foundation.

You should pile some of the natural debris, downed trees and brush,... on the outskirts of clearings on your property. It encourages rabbits, squirrels and other ground critters (also rats).

Well, burning that outhouse was a great first step! I’ll stick with my first suggestion; an elevated “tree-house” supported by the same type of structure that/supports your solar array. Otherwise, salvage windows and doors, and maybe the tongue and groove, but trash the old cabin.

The interior wood can be salvaged and treated to remove the mold and air drying to achieve the proper moisture level. They would make beautiful wood wainscoting in you new build, put a chamfered edge on one side and install vertically. Just store with space between the boards to prevent moisture buildup

You can lay 3or 4 rows of cement blocks on top of the new slab for a new foundation that is above the flood plane , then build from there

Joined the Pack today - ow, ow, ow-whooooooo!!! I second all the comments about wearing protection from the black mold; it's there and lots of it, and it can seriously impact your health long term. That hole in the floor - you've got plenty of wood available. Get some planks and just nail them temporarily onto solid areas surrounding that hole to cover it until you're ready to remove all the flooring. A fall into that hole could put your plans on hold for a long time, or even permanently. Be happy and excited, but please be safe. PS I'm a Mom - can you tell??? :)

Let that wood dry out that you find so pretty. Get a planer that you both will enjoy sending through the machine. You can reuse them. Then seal them! You can use it as paneling.

It appears the gravel floor didn't have any vapour barrier on it, so thats lead to mold and failure. The newest building code and future building codes are a remarkable launch forward in better building practice. I really like the idea of creating a new building on higher ground, it would be possible to thin out some of the trees such that you can get a better view too. If you can drive a concrete truck there, I might suggest an AMVIC R-30 ICF foundation system (walls) and perhaps a pre fab walls system such as Greenstone ( R-50) or other more fully completed modular if you can drive it there and crane it into position. Or you could make an ICF to the roof if you want....insulated concrete forms. Then think about the heating system. There is solar, but in winter you probably want electricity and a heat pump can give you heat and cooling and even heat hot water. I could go from my west coast home to install ICF with you if you like. Fun to do new projects.

The more I see of the lakeside location at the mouth of the stream, I think a wide beam boat is the solution! Could one be transported there by road and across your land? You might pick a bargain somewhere. It wouldn’t need its engine working, and might be sold cheap. Moor it in a dyke beside the shore. Build the rest of the living quarters on the high ground, and simply use a marquee in the summertime, and several cabins…

Hey Crystal and Jazzy, Realise this is a wild shot but the interior shiplap siding can be cleaned with a wash of diluted bleach and reused. Or steam cleaned. Even if you don’t end up using it all yourself, unless it’s rotten I’d think someone would be interested as a giveaway? There’s plenty of reusable materials for folks doing it tight.

I guess that y’all are gonna put a huge, elevated, on the foundation, covered, screened-in, gazebo-esque structure while also adding an outdoor shower, outdoor kitchen, and a few cement slabs for guest van parking ( with a few portable, inspired by Max&Occy, van decks/ yoga platforms/ elevated sleeping decks available…). Outdoor t’ai chi classes for all!!!❤🎉👏

Ladys!!! You've got black mold in that cabin. Generally, nothing is salvagable that is wood. If you're keeping any of the structure, you may need to spray it with 10% bleach solution. Even those wall boards that Crystal loves, and so do I. lol The cost of elevating a black mold cabin may out weigh the cost of just starting over with a new structure. You can use the foundation as your base for a storage building maybe........ Thanks for including us along your journey. I love you guys!! xoxo

I think you’re going to build a b&b for the pack to rent out so that you can share your land with those that follow you. And I agree that you need to do the lifted platform for the new cabin to guarantee it stays above water for the foreseeable future.

The standing Trees are good for a Future Portable Sawmill for you guys. You can Mill Wood for income or for your own future use. I would burn and Bury the Cabin for health reasons. Too much moisture.

Not crazy about A Frames but might be a practical idea for snowy days. Nice living, kitchen, bath area with a cozy sleeping loft with windows facing lake (of course) - elevated or change location to higher ground.

Building a couple of sturdy yurts on the lake would be fantastic. You could have guests stay there, or even stay there yourselves when you feel like it. Transforming that area into a health and wellness spot could be great - you already know how to build hot tubs and saunas! I can just imagine how relaxing it would be to sit in a wood fire hot tub next to a river feeding into the lake...

Hey women, so there is one kind of conifer (tree with needles) that loses its needles every fall. It is called a Tamarack or Larch. They also really like wet spots, and live in Maine, so I'm pretty sure one could be in Nova Scotia too. So that tree could actually be there in that wet spot by your 2nd cabin. If you don't need to get it down right away, you could wait for spring, just in case. I think you're gonna build a GLAMP SPOT maybe a tree house, maybe down lower.. we will see!!!!!
