With practice, this simple exercise is guaranteed to improve your timing on the drums. Being able to play along to a click track and being aware of good time is vital, but you don’t want it to become a crutch! Start with simple 8th note beats, then slowly dive into deeper subdivisions and higher tempos as you become more comfortable with this exercise.

This the typical argument between drummers and the rest of the band.as a drummer playing with mediocre time keeping musicians will always put the blame on you and in addition it makes you play uncomfortably due to the lack of support.

As a newbie drummer, my biggest struggle is timing. This video made me feel a lot better, and reading the comments is really assuring. I’ve been contemplating just giving up thinking maybe you can’t teach a dog old tricks and this isn’t for me. My timing struggles have killed all motivation to practice, but these loops appear to be just what I need. Definitely going to try!

Me too! As an semi intermediate an a middle beginner,timing is my biggest struggle.I've been watching so many videos but none of it helped but viewing Drumeo had helped me a bit and now i'm trying to push myself more and more so that I can get into my timing
@coolpool1969

This exercise actually helped improve my feel as well, which was unexpected! I'd always played naturally ahead of the beat, which I've now realised was because I didn't have faith in my timing. When I did this exercise I found that I was speeding up and if I 'relaxed' into the groove (playing more laid back), I was much better at maintaining the tempo. Thanks Drumeo!!

I think the toughest this is keeping time at 80bpm while putting a 32 note drum fill, the brain automatically adjusts itself to the quicker fills as a result losing time

Just have to practice that specific issue and put yourself in that situation. It will come soon. I learned in 20 minutes to fix myself at 70-80 bpm to never fall off and that would take weeks with my instructor. I asked them to teach harder faster paced lessons to push me to my limit and they really are not doing that. Good luck if you’re still stuck 4 years later! Cheers man!
@snufkin4568

I know this is 4 years old but im gonna piggy back off of it, Lmao, the fills are what mess you up big time. if not lack of actual timing it's self. That's really what you should be practicing. Small fills, like 8ths that have the last 2 or 4 beats as fill and see if you're still on time by the end of it. If you can train your brain to still count in quarters / eights while filling with 16ths or something then you should succeed as that's what's helped me. but then again, I'm not a veteran, I'm here because I'm learning too, and I immediately saw how bad my timing was when i put a fill in. at First I would come back with a faster tempo, if not, I would at least not be on time with the click. When I kept counting in whatever I was counting, I managed to be on time. But that wasn't a habit I had before, I would stop counting for the fill and just "feel it out" and when I put a metronome it was off bad lmao. (I'm new)

This is why it's lovely watching videos with Jared in, he doesn't put up (like he said) polished videos were he seems failure proof, instead he shows when he does mistakes too which shows how much of a human he and any other drummer is regardless of a drummer's skill.

Brilliant video, very helpful. I have just joined a church band that uses click track and loops live. When I was first learning drums, I didn't practice to a click very often. So I need to upskill in this area asap! I have downloaded the tracks from your website, which I am sure will be very helpful. I enjoyed the way you presented this video, I struggle with anxiety and seeing you not quite get it right, and being so open and honest about it, is so reassuring and encouraging for me.

This is a REALLY great exercise!! The key to time is always play with a metronome!! But with a band, you don't always have a metronome, YOU need to keep the time! This exercise holds you accountable! I'm looking forward to practicing along with these MP3s! I mostly practice with a metronome, but I think this exercise really will be a test!

I's cool that while so many drum teachers around here (or in "real life") explain things as if they had the absolute truth, you make your lessons easy (so easy that even for me, that I don't speak english a lot, can understand almost all of what you're doing) and with no pretensions beyond share your knowledge and experience as long as you're learning and developing your drumming. Thanks! (PD.: I'm thankful specially in this video because I was looking for a method to "fix" my internal clock.)

Excellent tutorial. I labor under the misconception that all great drummers have perfect time; that is apparently not the case. I also often wonder if live professional drummers are playing to a click or not. I have been practicing with a metronome now for about 8 months and it has made a HUGE difference in my confidence.

The masterclass god Benny Greb did a clinic my city a few weeks ago and touched on this. It's a huge deal and all musicians need a solid internal clock if they intend to play with others. Also, Benny's "Improvisation Lesson" goes very well with this exercise. In fact, I think you would use the combination to great effect Jared, a lot of the parts where you got all loose with where your fills were centered was where your time went. Thanks for the entertaining vid :)

Good lesson Jared & it's good that you leave the mistakes in & that you are humble. Another way is to set a 1/4 Note click to the slowest setting in my case 30 BPM & think of each click as the 1 of the Bar so that 1/4 Notes now become Whole Notes. Is that clear? Also check out "Beyond The Metronome by Malcolm “Mac” Santiago". You can get it on Amazon. Mac delves very deep into the subject of Internal Time Keeping, a very important tool for all musicians not just Drummers.

Hey Jared! This is probably my favorite video of yours so far, I'm loving the approach and being humble like that I think it adds alot more credibility to your teaching! To me as a drummer, I'm having a hard time knowing when the tempo keeping is good enough. Like at the very beginning you're rushing a bit and between around 0:39 - 0:47 the tempo is a little off. When do you feel like the tempo variations adds to "the vibe" and when they take away from it? Thanks again for the cool vid :)
