Building your own Hawaii minimal house for a vacation's cost

Kristie Wolfe spent $5000 to build herself a tiny home on wheels in her hometown of Pocatello, Idaho. It started off as a yearlong experiment in simple living, but she liked it so much she decided to keep living small, not only in Idaho, but she began looking for land to build a tiny vacation home.
She bought a plot of land in Hawaii sight-unseen for $8000. A year later she bought a plane ticket, packed her bags full of tools, and with the help of her mother, began to build a bamboo “treehouse” to fit the surrounding jungle (though rather than using trees for support, she built it on stilts). After two months of building every day “from dawn to dusk” and an $11,000 investment, she had a second home.
For Wolfe, the fact that it’s small- 15’ by 15’ or 225 square feet- is an asset. “My original house was 97 square feet so that was really tiny so this feels huge… I think small homes are beautiful because it fits with my lifestyle. I think having a lot of stuff mentally weighs you down even in ways that you don’t realize.”
Building her own home meant that Kristie was able to design everything custom: from a toilet-sink to save water (she’s not only off-grid, but she relies on rainwater capture for water) to an indoor/outdoor shower with cork-bark tiling. Whether she ever moves here permanently or simply moves on to building yet another home, she now knows she can build her own shelter.

Her whole philosophy is so earthy and independent, I love it!I think I"d use the downstairs as a kitchen and expand one side of the deck. I used to live out there and this house fits in beautifully. I live on the other side of the island now in a big 3 bedroom home. Out by my garden is a rock wall that I keep imagining a little shed there, but now I will make it into my own little get away studio! Mahalo plenty for the inspiration,I'm going to use many of her wonderful trim ideas. Time to turn this off and get out my drawing pad. Aloha.

getting 180 in of rain dosent mean you can go ahead and waste any. honestly i love the idea of the sink toilet idea but i thought about it and it wouldnt have suited me. i wash my hands oretty often and i dont use the toilet first. when you flush a toilet usally 3 gallons of water goes down the drain. you dont need 3 gallons of water to wash your hands. the trampoline idea is friken amazing. id throw a shit load of pillows in there with like 3 large blankets with an outlet connected so i can charge my electronics. then id build a mini books shelf and or sink area behind the wall for convinces.

Mind blown! This is awesome! I lived in the south pacific for three years and appreciate this for all that it is - and isn’t! I find much humor in all the nanny comments advising to “be careful” in one way or another. People in the western world (me included) are so programmed to fallow the rules and do what they are told that they fail to realize that we as people don’t need permission to figure out things on our own - we are capable! Cheers to Kristie Wolf and all the people finding a taste of true freedom and independence in off the grid living (even if only for a few weeks at a time).

Another great video. What a great and well thought out job both daughter and mother did on this tiny home! Very inspirational. I am glad she explained non-permitted houses that was a question I had. It was nice to see the attention to detail and decorative finishing work that was done to the home it really made it stand out and really showed the effort and thought into creating a great, functional living environment. I also like that she did make it a "tree house". That view greatly adds to the value and quality of life. It gives you a great sense of being a part nature, living above ground level in that environment with added security. I also like her explanation of the design and creation of the high bed and shower. She is very creative and her interest in design really shows. The only thing that I would be concerned of is the single rope railing. At that height and remoteness a fall could be really horrible. Also it's hard to tell exactly how she did her foundation it is very critical that a home that gets plenty of rain and wind on soil that less then perfect be done properly for that environment and type of structure. I probably would have created on the ground level an outside living area with a fire place or fire pit outside along with a covered barbeque and outside kitchen area. I would have enclosed the lower part of the building with slat windows like those used in the shower and 2 sliding glass doors on the lower floor level for ventilation and added storage space utilizing the inside corners of the lower level as long as it did not change the non-permitted status.

You're just terrific! You DO THINGS! You MAKE STUFF! You see something you like, you don't wine about it, you just pick up some tools and DO IT! Wish I had more friends like you! Wish we could talk over tea n share stories about the stuff we've built and ideas we got of things to do. All the Very Best Hon!

I lived in Hawaii for 10 years. I wish I had the idea to build an off grid tiny house in the jungle while I was there. I was young and just lived with roommates in a tiny apt in Waikiki and Kailua on Oahu. My only concern is hurricane winds. She's probably safe deep in the jungle. A few loose trees might hit the house and she might be ok? This is why I personally would build mine out of stacked shipping contaners welded together to make a tall fort if you want to be off the ground. I can't believe someone said "how's she going to find a Suiter? " a pretty girl could live in a cardboard box and guys wouldn't care. She's HOT! She'll be ok in that dept.

mixflip She's made it clear she's not really worried about it. The house , materials only since she did it herself (along with mom) cost around 11k. If there's damage I'm pretty sure she can fix it or rebuild. She doesn't seem the type to worry over much , just accept and deal with it :) Pfftt lol..as for suitors , I wouldn't imagine she'd have any worries with her looks and talents.

Wow Kirsten, great find once again. I just watched your other video about Kristie's hobbit house, so I had to check this one out too, and now I don't know how I missed it last year. Kristie, you have an obvious knack for building beautiful tiny homes in various places around the world. I would imagine your creative skills and experience are in high demand. Such smart and minimalist solutions for living so comfortably!

Hello Kirsten, Great video, entertaining, instructive and inspirational. I recently bought 2 acres of completely wooded land in north Florida near the Suwannee River. I too want to all the trees. I had the idea of building a treehouse prior to watching your video but now am sure I will. It will just be for weekend fun, something to share with family and friends. Thank you for your presentation.

The bathroom sink is so smart. Using the clean water that would normally fill up the back of the toilet for hand washing is genius. Plus having the sink drain straight back into the tank of the toilet is not only a great save in water and space.

ideamanrick1 Yes, I realize you were only quoting her. While somewhat endearing, like me, you were probably laughing at her word choice. While her command of the English language needs improvement, she certainly is highly motivated, and intelligent in other ways. I truly admire her.
