Do You have Bios Support? That's a very good reason to have Thunderbolt as an Add in card vs Thunderbolt Built-in to the Motherboard. The Thunderbolt Firmware is separate from a Bios Firmware Update. Hassle, right. And You have a Legacy Thunderbolt Audio interface. Sounds like a Bios support problem. However... I am spending a lot of time searching for thunderbolt compatibility of audio interface with Ryzen build and all I could gather is problems after problems and uncertainty. I want to build a new PC for music creation with Ryzen cpu 5900x. My 11 year old PC is an Intel corei5 2nd gen, 16gb ram 1333mhz and 250 gb 1.5 Gbps sata and 1TB HDD. I have been able to create a lot and because of low processing power I had to compromise a lot. But still I have been able to produce good music. Audio interface I am interested in is antelope audio zen tour synergy core....I am not planning to buy it yet... May be they will come with a better one that address all sorts of incompatibility issues and drawbacks.... I also want to know whether it is the pcie lanes from CPU or chipset that connect with the onboard thunderbolt controller. Thank you so much.

The Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 Controller will work. It's all about the order of getting everything right before connecting. Then the interface Drivers. That's why We've been very methodical in doing all of that in Our approach to the details. And details matter very much! Takes time to research and test. Seems We're doing more of that than the Vendors! Crystal Ball Forecasting... Since Thunderbolt 4 is out, expect new Thunderbolt Audio interfaces to be about 2 years out based on prior experience. After all, USB4 is coming and DDR5 with PCIe 5.0 and PCIe 6.0 are due out next year. Not a time for Vendors in between Platforms to experiment. On the AMD Platform for Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, PCIe Lanes to the Chipset of the Motherboard Block Diagrams We've seen so far. With proper BIOS setting and proper installation of drivers, the thunderbolt audio interface (say) Zen tour synergy core should work on the gigabyte b550 vision D-P MB which uses Titan Ridge TB3. ( If you have an opportunity to test it out, it will save $$ for me and others before we take a dive in). 2. TB3 controller on MB consumes 4 pcie lanes from CPU and 4 PCie lanes from Chipset. So out of 20 pcie lanes the CPU ( Ryzen 5900x) offer, 16 remains and out of 10 pcie lanes the chipset offer for additional expansion, only 6 remains. If I used two nvme SSD, I am left with no lanes at all from chipset.... and 12 from CPU...and so the graphics card will get only 8 lanes. Which is a better option for compatibility, on board TB3 or add on pcie card? Moreover I have a FireWire card for my current audio interface, Focusrite pro 14. This will consume 4 lanes. That means I will be out of chipset lanes and therefore I have to installed the FireWire card on the Pcie slot that connect the lanes from CPU. Please correct me if I am wrong. I have to check all the boxes before taking a dive in because once I plunge, I can't go back. I am planning to build a Ryzen based CPU with TB3. I already have the specs in place and already check compatibility in pcpartpicker. I don't want to go Intel way. My only fear is that, what if later when I upgrade the interface to the zen tour energy core or any other TB interface with in built chips for effects,etc....realtime processing, zero latency etc...., the tb3 device does not work or incompatible with motherboard. I have not seen any video that takes care of these issues. Gaming is dominating the headlines. Your testing will be a blessing to countless who are getting stuck between choices of amd and intel and tb3 incompatibility on windows with amd CPU. Right now, We have planned Thunderbolt 3 Audio interface Videos for Universal Audio and Presonus. Antelope Audio previously, was NOT on Our radar. You are among, so far, two requests. We are curious though! We just need more interest to justify the Video. The key, We think is making certain the Titan Ridge Thunderbolt 3 Audio interface is working first. We'll keep Antelope Audio in mind for a future Video! 2.) A.) The Thunderbolt Controller requires 4 PCIe Lanes. Period. B.) On a side note, the Chipset communicates to the CPU on 4 separate PCIe Lanes with that class of Chipset and CPU - AMD B550 and AMD Ryzen 9 5950X. Some use 8 PCIe Lanes. If using Gigabyte, Thunderbolt 3. If using ASUS, Thunderbolt 4. Same chipset! The point, Thunderbolt has 4 PCIe Lanes exclusively allocated and not shared to do only Thunderbolt! Nothing shared! This clarification We will reiterate in any Thunderbolt Videos! 3.) Yes, a GPU on that class of CPU will only get x8 PCIe Lanes in the B550. Suggest looking at a HEDT like the TRX40 for 2 x16 and 2 x8 Lane PCIe Slots. If You require those PCIe Resources. 4.) On-board Thunderbolt or add on Thunderbolt PCIe card... As long as the Thunderbolt is correctly configured, either will do. The point being an Add in card can be Upgraded whereas Thunderbolt built-in cannot. The key is the Thunderbolt motherboard header. Thunderbolt 3 or Thunderbolt 4. Right now, Thunderbolt 3 is more wide spread. For Thunderbolt 4, ASUS only. Gigabyte uses a 5 Pin Thunderbolt Header. ASUS has now gone from a 10 Pin header and adopted a 14-1 Pin Header. And We have one Subscriber using an ASUS Thunderbolt 3 AIC with a 14-1 Pin Header but NOT using said Header and it works! However, no Bios support. Go figure. We have yet to test and verify. We're just sharing what We know. 5.) For 1394 FireWire, don't try to install that 1394 FireWire AIC. Instead get a FireWire to Thunderbolt 3 adapter. We have another Subscriber who went through all of that. Same reasons as You. 6.) Thank You! Let's hope this helps! Testing, takes time, patience and due diligence! 7.) Absolutely! No GPU is a real problem right now to Building anything! But We have much to talk about in the interim! 8.) If You can wait until You get a GPU, OK. I’m trying to get a new cpu and motherboard but my concern is if the performance of thunderbolt is the same using a card like this or the asus thunderbolt 4 vs having a motherboard with thunderbolt built in? Which would be the better way to go . Hello guillado8259, Welcome. Thunderbolt is considered a high performance device. Not designed for sleep. Reboot fixes your problem. Think high performance. Everything green must be turned off. Now you have a conundrum. To reiterate, Thunderbolt implementations are Vendor specific based on Chipsets. Pick a Vendor and see what they have to offer. What do you gain? Anything different or better with Thunderbolt. Thunderbolt is built-in obsolescence.

Hi IonicBasher, Welcome! Let's diagnose Your setup and see what We can do to get You up and running. What Motherboard are You using? TRX40 Designare? We need to determine which Thunderbolt 3 AIC You're running. That's crucial to making this work to get the Firmware Update installed. As to the Driver, We have 3 things to install. The Driver, Firmware and the Thunderbolt 3 Control Panel. Are You certain the Driver did not work? The CD makes this easy. We can make this work without it. Just a little more hassle.

@@BuildOrBuy I am using this in an unsupported motherboard. A Gigabyte b350-gaming with a Titan Ridge 2.0 card. I jumped the required pins and installed the card with usb headers and power hooked up. I am am not certain the driver didnt work. I updated the firmware to the latest revision and installed the driver. I also installed a thunderbolt control program that I found online from the Microsoft store. It can see the nvm firmware version, the application version and the controller driver version.

Hi tikker, Welcome! Thank You! MSI X299 PRO 10G Motherboard. Thunderbolt 3 AIC should be in PCI_E4 Slot using 44 Lane or above CPU. And You're using a 48 Lane CPU. 5 Pin Thunderbolt Header. OK. Looking at Your Motherboard Block Diagram indicates Shared Bandwidth. See: PCI_E2, M2_2 and SATA2 combination table. And... PCI_E1~4: PCIe Expansion Slots. M.2_2 To reiterate, Not noticing any reason why Thunderbolt AIC in PCI_E4 Slot and Thunderbolt 5 Pin Header (JTBT1) connected should not work. To reiterate, it should. And when in Bios, You are able to Configure Thunderbolt settings? What Brand of Thunderbolt 3 AIC are You using? MSI or Gigabyte? MSI only indicates 1 Thunderbolt 3 AIC. Driver dated 2018. Did You check the Thunderbolt Titan Ridge 2.0 Firmware? Gigabyte was very finicky about the Driver version and Firmware Revision to update the Firmware. Thunderbolt 4 is much more complicated due to the Vendor specific Requirements. All proprietary. Hope this helps! Sounds like You have the Gigabyte Thunderbolt Titan Ridge 2.0 AIC. If true, that could be part of the problem.

@@BuildOrBuy thank you so much for replying, I was able to work around to the point where my windows is actually able to recognize something, so to simplify things, I have the option on the bios for thunderbolt support, but I don’t have an option to enable, instead I have auto detect which should be fine since it gives me a whole lot more options including enabling GPIO3. So I tried tricking the system, I noticed that the computer wouldn’t boot up if I had already a TB device plugged in from a cold boot (in this case it’s an Apollo X twin duo, an audio interface) I’ve read that people were able to make TB devices work when they wake from sleep and so I tried putting my pc to sleep, connecting the TB and turning it out and to my surprise when I woke the computer I had a PCI to PCI bridge driver not working under system devices, my guess is that it’s recognizing the controller but doesn’t really know what to do, I the downloaded the latest thunderbolt drivers from intel and when it asked me to reboot i forgot that if I did a full reboot with the interface plugged in and turned on, my pc would not boot back up. I’m not able to get display from a cold boot if the device is plugged in and turned on so I’m wondering what might be the issue here, To wrap up, I was able to get that PCI to PCI driver problem which in this case to me is a win after 3 days of trying to make the OS recognize the device. What should I do? Sorry for the long comment! Appreciate any kind of guidance.

Hi@@tikker, To make Thunderbolt work, We have had to follow very Specific priorities, in Order. 1. What I do not know which Thunderbolt 3 AIC You have. Sounds like Gigabyte. Yes, I understand Thunderbolt Titan Ridge 2.0. If true, then You should download Drivers from that Brand of Thunderbolt AIC, namely Gigabyte and not Intel. 2. Curious to note in MSI Thunderbolt 3 AIC documentation of all of the Motherboards Listed by MSI for Thunderbolt 3, Your Motherboard Model is not Listed. 3. Getting the correct Firmware and Driver was essential for Us. If You're trying to use the Gigabyte Thunderbolt 3 Titan Ridge 2.0 instead of the MSI Thunderbolt 3, that too could be part of the problem as previously discussed. To reiterate the correct Driver and correct Firmware were essential in getting Thunderbolt functionality.
