Tier 4 Final...
Whether you love it or hate it, it's a hot topic in the industry.
Aaron and the BuildWitt crew visit Quinn Cat in Southern California during this vlog episode to talk to their folks about repowering machines to meet the Tier 4 emissions requirements.
There are more than a few CAT scrapers in this episode. And not just the ones being worked on in the shop at Quinn. The guys visited a job site with Sukut Construction where they got to have fun photographing their 657 scrapers hauling TONS of dirt.
Aaron explains why scrapers are a great option for mass earthmoving and also why it seems that Southern California is some sort of Scraper Mecca.
Believe it or not, he actually explains how the air coming out of the exhaust on one of the Tier 4 scrapers is actually, in theory, cleaner than the air going into it, in Los Angeles County.
If you want to learn more about Quinn Cat, check them out at www.quinncompany.com/.

DEF is one of the most corrosive liquids ever. I used to install and maintain DEF systems. Every fitting, screw or part needs to be either plastic or medical-grade stainless fittings. Anything else will be destroyed in short order. It also creates SHARP crystals that will slice you right open.

I said this once before and I am going to say it again - your audio recording (considering you film outside in construction zones) is absolutely pristine. Not a shred of wind noise. No LOUD music that makes me dive for the volume button. No stupid opening or closing on the videos. Just great information recorded in a VERY professional manor. I'll probably still be here when you hit your first million subs. Whoever maintains the audio levels in the final edit deserves a raise and should consult with a LOT of the larger channels to get their audio under control - I'm looking at you HeavyD Sparks - your audio is a$$.

Good video. The gentleman with CAT forgot to mention that a large portion of the repower to T4 Final is implemented & payed for by the EPA. I can guarantee you the customer isn’t too thrilled to have an extra thousand wires & 30 sensors added to the machine!!

We as a society need to recognize that the 80's and 90's were the future. Everything designed, built and done during that time will never be matched now. We need to recognize the perfection that is equipment from that era and not destroy it.

Just take a look at Central Illinois. Things have slowed way down for this part of the State and Caterpillar. I lived here when the Russian oil line was dropped overnight. It was always eerie driving through Peoria and seeing half built factories. Most of the concrete pads and steel were in place. The failure of the Russians in Afghanistan, along with Reagan wanting nothing to do with the Russians, other than to drop the wall. You nailed it when you said the 80-90's were our greatest years of this nation. Let's hope there are a lot more people like Aaron not willing to accept that fact.

Your videos are fun to watch for sure. We retired from and moved out of Southern California because developers were developing everything they could put a tractor near. The crowds and taxes and costs are ridiculous to deal with. If you want to do anything fun, you do it with millions of others wanting to do the same thing the same day. Traffic? Forget about it. Peace and tranquility? It doesn't exist.

I always thought that California dozers were the only ones with slope blades. Now I know for sure. And the LA County Fire Grader was a great catch! Love the LA County FD Cat equipment! That's super cool. Repowering old gear. Everyone knows the older stuff is built tougher... Now friendly to the turtles! My question tho, being a mechanic and working predominantly with CAT gear would be do QUIN CAT update SIS with a repowered option when looking up parts and other service documents? Could be a hell of a trauma for the guys in the field doing subsequent repair work on a repowered machine with superceded documentation!

CAT is usually damn good about documentation and parts support. The biggest issue I see is just the unreliable SCR systems themselves. Why did no one bring up reliability vs the old? Keep saying up grade and wiring sensers dpf? Old pans didnt break and were reliable. I dont c this as an upgrade for reliability!

Diesel particulate filters burn diesel during regen... however the new engines are probably more efficient.

They run all types of scrapers everywhere in the United States, your assertion that they only run them in California is assanine. They also repower the same machines at other locations.
@AaronWitt

they do but not even close to the numbers they run in California. Other than a few other markets like Denver, big scraper spreads like the ones in California aren't common

So are they only doing this to machines that need a rebuild or how does that work ? If there’s 651Bs out there still running with the original engine would it be allowed to run until it needs a rebuild then they would update it to tier 4 final or are they pulling running equipment off sites
@AaronWitt

@@AaronWitt that’s wild. Already expensive Cali is going to become even more pricey. Cost to pull and retro fit all that equipment is going to be enormous. Cost per yard is sure to increase. Increasing cost to develop. Be interesting to see the back log of equipment being retro fitted. Will keep the equipment manufacturers busy. Hopefully global supply of parts can keep up.
