Aaron and Alex traveled to Wheeler Machinery, the largest CAT dealer in Utah to record two Dirt Talk podcasts. One of the podcasts was with the Executive Vice President of Wheeler, Jonathan Campbell. The other was with local contractor Ryan Goodfellow, also known as Rock Structures. We got to tour the facility and see some real neat equipment. Enjoy!

My great grandfather worked for Wheeler. 40 plus years, 1940’s into the 80’s. They put the service techs name on the driver side door. My great grandmother had pictures of him next to his service trucks. My favorite was him in a mine in Wyoming leaning on his “service” truck. A late 60’s station wagon with his name and Wheeler machinery with the old big C cat logo on the side. He was a very precise mechanic, kept torque wrenches that were only used to make sure his everyday torque wrenches were still up to snuff. Every time I see an old cat in working order I remembered Grandpa George and how he kept them going.

What type of dozer is that a d7 8 9? I’m not sure. The one with the grill mod on the top of the blade! Watched a bit longer and it was revealed as a d9 with garbage related modifications.

You guys need to go tour the Lafayette engine center in Lafayette Indiana. That’s where those 3500, C175s and the big unit 3600s are machined from a casting to a running engine. Machine shop all the way to dyno and final paint and shipping in one building. I worked there for 5 years and it’s an amazing facility.

I used to work for one of the original founders of Wheeler Machinery. His name is Aaron (Arron?) Robison. He's no longer with us but he was a great man. He didn't think there was much of a future for the company early on, at least that's what I believe. Ah well, you never can tell.

Back when I hauled oversize for ew wylie a trucking company out of Fargo ND. I had taken a wheel loader there and some skid steers on another run aswell. The footprint size of that facility is amazing. Just a huge maze of the best equipment in the industry and my 5 year old side of me was freaking out with excitement and sadness because I would've loved to get lost on their property, but I unfortunately I wasn't able to wonder. Awesome video.

I got to go on tour of open house of a new building for overhaul of Detroit Diesel and it had the Allison Automatic Transmission DINO area also. Very impressive new shop TESTING of those very complicated Heavy duty Transmission. Just the, what I call a maze for the Automatic Transmission FLUID runs in those great Transmission. It was amazing. The guys and gals that are Trained and know those Allison's insides are top notch. They know there stuff. Just watching them work on tear downs of those Transmission and what those workers know in there brains about how they work. They never get the credit they deserve. They keep the Garbage trucks and the bus's and most important the Fire Rigs rolling out on busy stop and go Driving on streets. It's very impressive just thinking about those DINO'S what they simulate, on load testing, so the power trains go back together and work for the Long haul. The Stop and go work, day in day out, and those Transmission take a licking and keep on ticking.

Thank you for the walk through. The explanation of those trash landfill machine is very important on the building up of Garbage/ trash. Very hard wear on any Landfill Garbage work. Just wears out undercarriage. I like the Guard removers of Trash corrosive junk. Just those little bars, extend the life of wear on tracks. Personal think Garbage Landfill is harder on heavy compaction Equipment than say big Dozer's pushing down the top of a mountain in like Virginia. Or just west of Salt Lake City at ( Bingham Canyon Copper Mine) If you ever visit Salt Lake City, it is well worth your time to go up to visit the mine. The Gate entry station people are very nice, give you a MAP of wear to go to overlook gift shop I got to see BLAST of a shelf, then D-10s & D-11sare I have seen complete rebuild of Garbage transfer stations, so the pushers don't have to rub the cement edge of walls( wear out sides of undercarriage's on pushers. Garbage truck dump on large floor area, instead of dumping Garbage over from top. Next time you go dump your Garage at say a transfer station. Look at the condition of the big trash pushers. Very ruff looking, lots of wear and tear on Equipment.

Fact check, the largest equipment dealer in the state of Utah is Arnold Machinery. Arnold owns Six State franchise for Volvo, and Hitachi mining. They also are One of the nation’s largest Hyster lift dealers with over A Six state territory. They also own general implement which is a wholesale suppler of farm equipment for the western United States. Wheeler equipments largest customer is Brigham Canyon mine (Kennecott Utah Copper which accounts for about 30% of its revenues which is scheduled to close in 2035. This will have a significant impact on Wheelers machines in marketplace, and with no other large significant open pit mines in Utah this will be devastating blow to this Cat dealers mining support and sales division. In addition Caterpillars exit from OTR engines due to emission complexities lost some large truck engine customers like Simon, Godfrey, ShipEx, Savage and Pride which accounted for a portion of its sales. Wheeler may be your favorite dealer, but far from Utah’s largest.

Fact Check, Wheeler is by far the largest equipment dealer in Utah. Arnold has three locations in UTAH, Wheeler has 11. Wheeler's shop space 150,000 feet dwarfs anything Arnold has. As far as machine sales, Wheeler is the number one selling dealer in Utah. Wheeler outpaces, Komatsu, Volvo and Deere.

Only thing that makes me curious, is where were all the mechanics, and parts people dropping miscellaneous items by each station. Unless they were there on a off day, which I suppose would be more conducive to doing a wondering interview as they move about the facility. As I imagine that would be a rather hectic pace during working hours. So that would lead me to think that the few people we did see actually working, were in fact staged to give the viewers. I'm torn between mixed feelings about it, so I will refrain from saying anything due to error on the part of not enough information to be accurate about what I'm feeling here. As for the gentleman doing the job as tour guide. I'd say he's in his position, because of his apparent gift of reciting what makes the best impression of the company, and by his personal presence being the way that it is. How do I put this as it's nothing personal against the gentleman, but with the general tone of his voice, in his physical build, the way his beard is trimmed, and the sleeved arms. Tends to make people feel somewhat intimidated, and therefore somewhat makes people feel that they have to believe anything he tells them. Just my personal interpretation of the whole situation, because the dyno operator wasn't too thrilled about him, and was definitely putting him in his place, by correcting him numerous times on camera. The gentleman washing the equipment, never once looked in the direction of the cameras. I don't know about you, but even if I am working hard at whatever I'm doing. If I see people out of the corner of my eye that don't belong, and I am doing anything that maybe somewhat of a risk to anyone, then I slow down to access the situation so as not to put someone in a bad situation. Plus he had no wet work clothing on, no PPE, as in hard hat hearing protection, gloves, face shield none of the things necessary to actually do the job correctly. Again just what my observation after 40 plus years in construction on major mechanical projects, and knowing what is required by any operation with insurance, ohsa, oversight. Which in a facility such as that, if they were lax on such things, then they likely have a high rate of accidents. Even being self-insured would lead to extremely high cost of insurance, as the potential for lethal accidents is high there due to the nature of the business what with heavy equipment, and the contaminants on the equipment from the landfills.
