Zdrevete. I'm enjoying your exploration and descriptions of Beloved Bulgaria. I lived in Sofia from 1999 'till 2008 giving private English lessons. There were few Americans there then and I was the honored guest in many homes where fine family Rakia with mezae led to succulent dishes and wonderful conversation 'till the wee hours. I wonder if you have experienced one of my favorite memories of my time there. The folks I became friends with were successful young professionals, but boy, they sure knew how to party. And often, as if by a signal, someone would go and turn the stereo off and they would sing rounds of folk songs, taking turns and joining or solo, some with rich proud voices, some revolutionary, some silly and all with laughter and heart. I hope you do, I bet they would be very pleased if you asked to hear it! Anyway, blogadaria for the sweet reminiscences. BTW, I only left because of the 2008 financial crash, I was a bit of a luxury item. I'd still be there otherwise and often am, literally, in my dreams. Say hi to Melnik for me, I bet some will remember me.

It's great that you're discovering the beauty of Bulgarian folk! And don't worry - we really have quite a lot of it, so you can definitely find more to enjoy! That performance of "Kaval sviri" is indeed quite good and the song itself has the advantage of being more upbeat and cheerful. Still, I'll recommend one of my personal favourites - "Philip Koutev choir - Kojilio - Кожильо писан и шерян by Georgi Genov" - it sounds somewhat sadder, but that makes it all the more touching. And in the same line of performances, the Philip Koutev choir's Japanese collaborations are also quite nice - I especially like their lullaby, the Edo Komoriuta. Naturally, there's much, much more to Bulgarian folk music, which (you'll soon find) is quite highly varied. Not all of it is easily digestible though - f.e. for me the Rhodopean music is like the boza - it's good, but it's definitely an acquired taste. Also, I recommend some things which aren't traditional folk, but are based on it, like various kinds of folk fusions etc. One of the most popular examples are the three current songs of Dia (Egeya, Veno Neveno and Ogan), where she successfully combines folk with modern styles like dubstep etc. The group Oratnitza are also a classic example of modern Bulgarian ethno-fusion (Bulgarian folk + didgeridoo, and modern sound, of course). And from the more ethereal, mystical, earthly side, I really can't recommend the groups Isihia and Kayno Yesno Slonce enough. You obviously don't have to react to any of those recommendations, though I think you'll do well to check them for yourselves - you might get to like some. And there are a lot more examples that I didn't mention, but it all depends on what you yourselves like.

Wonderful music. Love those other-worldly harmonies. I first heard this piece in the late 1980's. Even though I couldn't understand the words, I found it very moving. Powerful stuff.

i'm really proud of my country and honestly thank you for understanding and thinking that the bulgarian folklor music is above chalga and hip hop bg music **** INTERESTING FACT**** One of the most famous folklor singer is ** Valya Balkanska - Izlel je Delyo hajdutin** and her song is flying on voyager 1 and 2 in space so if/when another alien civilaziation find the voyager they will hear actually what earth contains deeply and what is real music :)

I haven't read through the previous comments in case someone else has already mentioned it but at 3:00 what he interprates as vibrato are actually seperate notes in a series of triplets rather than vibrato. Very difficult very impressive to say the least.

Listen ''Petrunko'' it is a combination of traditional Bulgarian folk music and modern trap. It is amazing.

This is the real bulgarian music not the oriental chalga like azis who is gypsy or the chalga music that is influanced by turkey and the arabic music and the albanian...

I think you should react to Сто двайс' три - Мерудия which is kind of a mixture of bulgarian folklore music and pop music and is one of the few bulgarian songs that have English lyrics mixed up with the Bulgarian lyrics and its very cool. As a whole, I would say that Мерудия is a very unique Bulgarian band.

Guys i think that you should like Malka moma by Neli Andreeva its another folk song of ours. That was the soundtrack of the movie "Hummingbird" I think Jason Statham was starring there.. That song gives me chills every time when i hear it .. I think you might enjoy it. :)
