Part of our lawn maintenance routine is spreading gypsum in the fall. Gypsum is calcium sulfate and it is used on heavy clay-based soils to improve soil structure and water infiltration. The sulfur in gypsum also provides a green boost to your yard and will help to improve plant health before going dormant for winter. In this video we capture the process of getting bulk pelletized gypsum from the local fertilizer dealer and then spreading it on our lawns with two John Deere 318 lawn tractors with pull type spreaders. I like to call this "Yard Farming" cause we're using bulk agricultural products like what is used on the farm fields and spreading in a way to cover lots of acres in a short amount of time! Thanks of watching!

It is pretty fun to do this once a year. Kinda does make me feel like a farmer when you get a grain wagon involved! I think I need a full episode with Crazy Joe in there. I didn't get to capture his full "Joe-ness" in this one. My goal is to get everyone I know in a video at some point! Thanks for always watching and commenting Tony!

That is a really good idea to have the grain wagon set up to load directly into the spreader.....you really have a nice place, so does your brother, really like the pond......I have used gypsum on my yard before and it seemed to work well....great video, very entertaining and thanks for posting

Thank you sir. Yeah, after doing the gypsum like that with the wagon it is tough to think about going back to bags! We spread 2500 pounds in just over an hour like this! That pond is really nice and a great place to have around the corner during the summer!

Bulk... hmmm!!! I’m gonna have to try that... benefits... so much better than lifting those heavy bags.... I can probably get it cheaper too... environmentally friendly w/ no bags to waste...it will impress the neighbors!! Game plan... have a soil test done... fix my neighbors old spreader (it’s rusted up just like yours) mine is good to go... call the coop and see if there’s a cost for a fertilizer wagon... while I have them on the phone... ask them where I can get 500lbs of triple 13 mixed in bulk! My grandpa would tell me, “Boy, that could be did. But, thar may be a better means.” Neil... having a small rural property (2 acres of yard:meadow and 8 wooded acres) is a lot to take care of. But I often find myself wanting more. You just reminded me of one of those reasons why... I was looking at PTO spreaders for the back of my baby Kubota.... they are cool and I don’t have one! But, 500lbs of fertilizer and 50 lbs of various seed... a year... makes it kinda hard to justify one. Here’s where you can help me out... your advice: If I buy the new spreader, do you think my wife will let me buy the neighbors field so that I have a place to use it??? If it works... Grandpa would be proud... he once told me, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way. And boy, your name is Will... So, I’m expectin’ you to find one.” Please advise!

Will, you made me laugh out loud when I got to "let me buy the neighbors field..." That sounds like reason enough to go for the spreader! I've been wanting a 3pt spreader myself but have the same dilemma, as the pull type seems to work just fine once I break the rust loose! Perhaps the need to spread gypsum on your property could be the addition to the workload that pushes the justification slider in your favor. If you do have heavy clay soils, then gypsum can likely be put on at a 500-600+ lb/acre rate without issue. As much as I think you should get the spreader, I think that if your wife is anything like mine she may not see the need for more land the same way we do 😋 I'm afraid you're on your own there! And what I didn't clarify in this video, is that normally we take this full wagon around and spread for some more neighbors too. Last year we got 5000 pounds of pelletized gypsum and made a day out of it spreading for more family and friends. This year it was just my brother and I and we only got 2500 lbs at a cost of $265/ton. So it cost my brother and I about $165 each. Also what you didn't see and I neglected to say that my friend Sterling that brought the wagon, went back for another load for himself and a family member. I like hearing hearing those words of wisdom from your Grandfather and I appreciate your comments. I hope to hear about your new spreader and all the gypsum you put down as well!

@@digdrivediy my soil is the same rocky clay that Elite Earthworks is always digging. Because the rocks are limestone... my soil is alkaline. So, I add sulfur to it about every three years... that is how often I get a soil test. Maybe the gypsum will help with the clay. I’ll ask about that on this years soil test. Now about that acquisition plan of mine... I’m gonna take your response as a “GO”... I won’t tell her who my advisor was... I’ll just let her know it was a YT expert!!! About going bulk on the fertilizer... if I do... where will I ever get bags to repair my broken drain tiles
@digdrivediy
@digdrivediy 3 жыл бұрын
That gypsum will most likely help with the clay. You've probably got high magnesium levels too if you're in the limestone and gypsum is great for stripping mag and taking it down lower into the soil profile. Also like you mentioned, sulfur is good at stripping the calcium so that is a good strategy. What form of sulfur do you use? I recommend a lot of AMS (Ammonium sulfate) for helping to combat alkaline soils. Now, I'm comfortable being an advisor to soil recommendations, because that's actually what I do every day all day long as an agronomist. On the other hand, I appreciate the fact you're not going to reveal to your wife who the advisor is when it comes to land acquisitions! Being called a YT expert is using the term pretty loosely as well, so maybe you'd better just tell her that someone "out standing in 'a' (farm)field" made the suggestion that land is hardly ever a bad investment! If you know someone with a water softener, you'll be all set on those tile repair bags, so you've got the green light for bulk fertilizer and a PTO spreader too.

Thanks! We dug the pond in 2010 for my brother when he and his wife built that new house. I rented a John Deere 9300 articulated tractor and pull pan to dig it for them and we built up the hill around his house. In order to come up with enough dirt we just kept going down and got the pond to over 20 feet deep. His closed geothermal loop runs down into the bottom. We put Indiana #2 limestone around the top perimeter and pea gravel in the "out of water" beach area with sand underneath the water in the beach. It turned out really nice. Maybe I should make a winter time recap video of that pond with all the pics and a few videos that we took. Thanks for checking out the video!

Sterling does have himself a pretty sweet truck. He has done a lot to it and does a great job of always keeping it looking sharp. It is actually a twin turbo 6.4L in this truck but you're right, it does have a bit of that 7.3 sound to it. Thanks for checking it out!

Hey thanks Casy. I wish I had been making videos when we dug that pond for my brother in 2010. I used a big 4WD John Deere tractor and pull pan and I think it turned out nice so thanks for noticing it. I'm not sure what to think about the sound. I hate hearing that it isn't very good. I did turn it down a bit cause folks were saying it was too loud. Also, KZfaq makes the video much darker than what I see in my editor. I need to do some investigating on how to get it more consistent. Thanks for the feedback I really appreciate it.

@@digdrivediy amazing video Neil I thought the video was just great with the amount of light quality you had with a sun going down. Actually your sound is one of the reasons why I like watching your videos is because I'm a little deef from 30 yr in a freight truck. Most of the time I can't hear what most people are saying if they're filming like that area where your family and your kids were running around. I can't hear nothing of what nobody saying. So keep up the good work. Also how do you get that pond that color? do you have any videos on when you made it? Would you consider doing a walk around video and giving us some information on it? I'd love to see something like that. That's got to be the prettiest color of blue ever seen in water.
