its absolutely true. I've stayed within 155-168lbs of bodyweight this entire year. in the beginning the most id ever touch on a deadlift was 225, and only for a few reps. now i can get 3 sets of 10 with 225 and am really close to hitting a 300lb PR.

Definitely true. When I started lifting I bulked right out of the gate and went from a skinny fat 178 to a puffy and not even strong 212. After trial and error and stumbling across proper programming I cut back down to 180 and increased all of my compound lifts by a lot. I still utilize a calorie surplus but in a much more structured way along with proper programming, it’s the only you’ll achieve your most advanced potential in the long run

Jarred Geis you could definitely hit 300 if you do 225 for 10, your projected max should be right at 300

If ur a naturally lean person and your lifting, slowly bulk until your natty potential for muscle mass is done with. Do mini cuts over that period of time too. Cutting no more than say 8-10 pounds ever. What I’m currently doing is getting to 225 at 5’10 by next fall to then cut to 215lbs at the same bodyfat I was when I was 200lbs. +15lbs muscle gain. Than hopefully I’ll be 221lbs, 224lbs, 226lbs and so on at my limit. At around mid teens bf.

I have gained almost 50 lbs this year...but I definitely needed to. 114 to 160lbs at 5 9. People don't really recognize me as the same person I was in January, and I think that's really good for me personally. I've battled eating disorders my entire life so finally being able to just say "I am done with these mental battles" and just started really eating has been so rewarding. For the first time in my entire life I have some sort of muscles. Of course I was severely underweight so this isn't for most people but I just wanted to share my story.

Hey Allan, i've been lifting and taking care of my diet and health since the start of the year, after sitting on my ass and just packing pounds upon pounds of bodymass ever since I was a young lad. Weighted in at about 118 kilos in january (260 pounds), pre-diabetic, with a horrible diet, all of this in the ripe old age of 20. Having never put my foot on a gym, I sought the guidance of youtube and eventually, your videos as well. Suffice to say, in december of 2019 im now weighting 85 kilos @ 180 cm (187lbs @ 5'11 or so, im not good with imperial). My lifts are still mediocre and i still want to shed a few for more kilos, but hey, Im really happy. Thank you for your videos, and thank you for the message in this video in particular. Seeing that weight loss is a lifetime journey, even if you're an experienced lifter, just encourages me even more to keep going strong. Cheers my man, and happy holidays!

I'm a rock climber and in climbing, everyone is always trying to shed weight so they can climber harder. This video weirdly spoke to me in like a reverse way - you shouldn't be trying to shed weight just so you can milk more progress, most of us have a lot of untapped potential at our current weight. With the right program we probably have a tonne of room to progress without needing to lose a whole bunch of bodyweight. Crazy, not what I thought I'd get out of this. Cheers Alan.

I believe it is the natural way for every young man to spend much of his teenage years and his early twenties eating a lot of food, putting on a lot of muscle mass, and becoming strong until he reaches fullsterkur/fullstyrka/full strength. Then he can be more concerned about being lean or whatever. You mustn't overdo it, but it's not worth it to worry about abs or whatever when you're young and getting big. I fall into this category myself still. I started at 19 and I'm nearing 21 now. I've been overtraining quite a bit because I love training so much that I don't notice until it's too late, so I've unfortunately had to take some time off, and I've spent some time cutting down as well, but I'm looking forward to improving my strength and becoming a bigger and stronger man with every passing day.

Dude the identity part is so relatable. I’ve always been the skinny kid, but last year I decided to take weight lifting and diet seriously and have gained 15 pounds of mostly muscle, and so many people have noticed. The best part is being asked seriously if you use steroids, because it’s such a drastic change from your old self. I love the identity change, I’m not huge, but now I’m known as the strong buff guy in my group and at work. It’s fun

That's similar to what has happened to me. I was never slight in stature despite being skinny, however I've gained 30 pound in the last 15 months, probably 10-20 pounds of it muscle. I feel big, in my back, shoulders, arms, traps, etc. And a lot of people have noticed that didn't even know I was working out. Feels good man. It is quite a paradox. We seem to follow all the healthy choices (eat well, drink water, sleep a lot, train hard) to achieve unhealthy objectives (gaining more weight and BF% than ideal). All of this under the assumption that the stronger we are, the healthier we become. Interesting video Alan!
@monoxgg
@monoxgg 4 жыл бұрын
@Adrijana Radosevic I personally tend to lean towards the chicks porking. Nevertheless, it wasn't always like that. In the past, I also failed into the trap of having extra weight to become stronger (for few months though) just as Alan mentioned. But soon I figured out that it wasn't worth it. Ever since then, I remain shredded and gain strength slowly. Therefore, I can't relate to the issues you are asking. But that's me. Others have different reasons like the ones you said. From my personal observations, having lived in many countries and worked out in different cultures, it seems this "being strong" obsession is mostly an US thing. Most people in other countries are going for hypertrophy while remaining relatively lean. Unless US, which they are really willing to get tons of pounds and even do the One Gallon of Milk a Day to push the strength gains. Quite crazy.
@HDloly
@HDloly 3 жыл бұрын
@Adrijana Radosevic It's been too long time to comment on your comment but I'll leave one anyway. Have you heard of Alexander Zass? I actually think usual methods of strength training don't develop tendons and the way people eat don't help with skeleton and tendon health, even the people training. Until what I know, Alexander develop his strength with isometrics, said to be a training for the tendons. I guess this is why some lifters need straps at higher lifts? Cartilage consumption an real calcium is out of fashion, but our body has a need for it in the form of gelatin from bone broth and pieces of bones cooked to the chewing point. To use the calcium the body will need other nutrients too like K2, magnesium, vitamin D, and A, that work in sinergy. By no means I'm saying that there is definetely a way for you to go up, but I definetely think there can be potential room for improvement if you never heard of this things and want to go after them.

I’m a vet (albeit Army) Thats what drew me to you. Suffered depression and ptsd. Didn’t agree with everything you did. Mostly I did. But you taught me a TON. This vid is coincidental. I was thinking to myself a month ago, “How can I stair-step down with age and wear and tear? I won’t be able to be 280 forever.” (I went up from 215 and am 6’4) And everything you mentioned in this video is true. I am however, as I’m sure you are, proud that I did this on my own. 5'10" here. 31 years old in 2019. Been between 170 and 180 lbs since 24 years old. I got serious about weight training at age 28. Hitting the gym 3-5 days a week,2 hours per day. I did a little research about bulking and even the pros don't agree. I found a little more favor towards bulking than not. I'm at 195 lbs now. A little heavier than I'd like to be but I've noticed my muscles growing faster. My workouts are also more intense,since I better understand how to make muscles grow through trial and error. This video assures me I can drop the weight once my muscles are where I'd like. Thanks for your input.

The way I'm currently trying to progress (fairly intermediate) is: go to these arbitrary but reasonable numbers on maintenance, when achieved try to maintain over a slight cut, then set new objectives with maintenance / slight surplus. This will probably all come undone once I need a bit more resources to progress, but will ride this wave for as long as I can. I don't wanna bulk unless I absolutely have to, as I know it can be a slippery slope. Anyway, informative and entertaining as always Alan.

I lost about 25 lbs, and got down to about 200 at 19. From there, over the last 2 years, I have gained back 22 of those lbs. My lifts have gone up a whole lot, and I definitely look and feel much better than I did at 17. That being said, I am still overweight, and I want to get back to 200 or under. I feel that my workouts are good, and probably dont need changing, it is really my diet that I am struggling with. I try to eat healthy, but sometimes I am busy, sometimes I crave junk food, and sometimes I lack the motivation to meal prep or cook. I am currently looking for a better way to motivate myself and solve this problem, because 222 is not healthy for me and I am starting to feel it.

Very mature... Longevity is the key. Having said that I am afraid most of us will have to do this mistake and will not be able to resist temptation of gaining some extra poundage to our lifts by taking dirty bulk approach - at least once in a lifting career 😉

This is the body type that I'm after. I don't care about being cut, but I like the idea of having those superhero-like gluts, massive traps and huge arms. Thanks for the advice bro!

Nice video Alan. It’s very considerate of you to operate on the notion “Do as I say and not do as I do” Even I was adamant to not drop body fat when probably that would have been a good thing for me in the long run. I happened to have increased my strength in my big lifts while dropping body fat. Needless to say that I’m NOT an elite lifter. Hence, for those folks who are pursuing strength training at not an elite level and maintaining an enormously high body fat percentage; the juice probably is not worth the squeeze. On a separate note, I found that incorporating some cardio helps one recover faster between sets and hence on higher volume blocks with lots of sets, this increased aerobic capacity and better cardio vascular system can help.

Crazy. I'm 6' 3" and weigh 248 and look fat, stomach and love handles are there. For you 250 look like a damn beast. We all wear it differently.

What someone has done is not going to be changed of course. I completely agree with your recommendation on lean builking. You dont need to become fat to keep getting stronger/ more muscular.

Thanks Alan. I am also 6'0" 215. I'm focusing on eating at maintenance while strength training. My ultimate goal is to get back into Crossfit as I feel that's the best application of strength, performance, AND most importantly long term health.

I was really hesitant to cut. I just squatted 405 at 17 for the first time yesterday and really didn’t wanna lose that. This video makes me feel a lot better about cutting because I can definitely drop 10-20 pounds

Great points. Earlier this year I was 310 lbs and solid. No six pack but no paunch around the waist. No man boobs going on. My lifts were the highest I have ever had. Then 4 months with injured knees then 2 months of a hip issue derailed that. I lost muscle but I also dropped body fat. I started to reassess if I really need to be that big again and at age 39. I don't. I didn't need to be 310 at any age. 310 is 310. Your body doesn't know it is fat or lean it just knows you are a big dude to hump around. I look perfectly fine 35 lbs lighter and I am almost as strong at 275 and my knees thank me and I'm sure my body does as well. I've had 4 surgeries from sports on my knees. Anything I can do to help avoid #5 is a good idea. Goal for 2020. Loose the little paunch I have built up and shoot for consistent walking around weight in the mid 260s.

Good advice. I’ve always been slender so it was hard for me to add weight, basically I could only do it by adding muscle. Then as I got older I was able to put weight on around my stomach, not a good look. I started competing in Powerlifting at the ripe age of 67. But the record for weight class (205) was too high so I lost weight to be competitive (183). Ruggle trying to gain strength and power while essentially dieting...almost impossible.to gain strength eating 1800 calories/day. I’m still lifting in the 183 class, but I may soon jump to 205 to I can be stronger. Actually, I’ll keep my weight around 195. I’ll end up putting 50 pounds on my bench in a year which isn’t much for a 30-year-old but for someone who is now 68 it’s pretty good. At my age I can’t afford to gain a lot of weight because it doesn’t come off quite so easy.
