I plan on getting a reef tank within the next two years slowly buying everything with the budget I have. This video is so important I have all picky pets who are old and have to have hand made food for there old stomachs and I just feel very weird not spending time before feeding everything I own to make sure everything is the best possible for there digestion track. This makes me feel so comfortable just making it. Thank you so much for the help in all your videos as well.

Did the math when I made recipe this years ago...(it lasted well over two years at two cubes a day and it cost $240ish? To make.. vs.. $14 a month in blister packs at only 2 years = $340 4x nutrition for less $ and no trips to store just for blister packs.

Hey guys, super cool! I've been making my own food blend for years now combining frozen with coral foods, amino acids, KZ products, and pellets. What I've found works best for me is to use silicone ice cube trays for storage. Easy to pop out and freeze with a little water binds everything together.

Question. Are we potentially adding diseases to our fish? Rods and LRS appear to be just your typical raw seafood batch, where as Hikari claims a 3-Step Sterilization Process. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks in advanced BRS.

thanks a lot for such effort and info. how many times we can use this food per day? and how much quantity per serving? and would be enough as a single food?
@BRStv
@BRStv 3 жыл бұрын
How much and how often will depend on the fish that you're keeping. For example, some fish need smaller, but frequent servings. The beauty with DIY food is that you can tailor the recipe to the types of fish that you're keeping too. For that reason, you could definitely use only this food if you formulate it right 🙂

Really any food that fish generally eat could be added 🙂 You'll probably find that some textures work better when cut up into smaller pieces than others. No doubt, there is a bit of trial and error when making your own frozen fish food.

@stupified007
@stupified007 4 жыл бұрын
I think if they weighed it out and cut the amount per bag by half, you MAYBE could make that a profitable venture. You'd also have to value your labor extremely low as well. That being said, if it really can hold its nutritional value over a year or two frozen then this likely is worthwhile for personal use if you need frozen food. Good for BRS for putting this together.

I think id scale the size down to 8oz like other flats or add a bit more of the lower cost base proteins.

Would there be more benefits to making the coral food portion separate from the fish food and freezing it into its own bags and feeding the corals at night? Also you think the RedSea Coral AB+ could be added to the mix and frozen as well?
@kakam458
@kakam458 Жыл бұрын
Freezing destroys some of the amino acids. it makes no sense to freeze something thats fresh like AB+ especially as it can be stored in room temp.

Just so I'm correct, the recipe calls for 3oz of freeze fried krill ( will need to purchase 2 of the 1.5oz containers), but what about when the recipe calls for 3oz BRS freeze dried mysis, but the container sold on the BRS website is 2oz. How should the recipe be adjusted to accommodate the 2oz container?
@BRStv
@BRStv 2 жыл бұрын
You've got a few options. Buy two containers and save the left over for later, use 1 oz less of the freeze dried mysis, or make a partial batch. Just don't overthink it. If you're a little light on one ingredient or a little heavy on another, you're still going to end up with a solid food for your fish and corals.

Being that this food is so dense in nutrients, should be extra care full when feeding (over feeding which would cause nitrates and such) or should I feed the same way as if it was any of the other frozen mix food mentioned?
@tom-andrethomsen
@tom-andrethomsen 4 жыл бұрын
Just check your nitrates and phosphates, and adjust filtration accordingly. Notice that I say "filtration", and not "feeding". The fish and coral should get as much food as they can consume, to be nice fat and healthy. Nutrient export strategies should be a consequence of required feeding, not the other way around. If you find it difficult to implement enough export, then you have simply overstocked your system (based on experience level, and how much time, energy, and money that you are willing to invest).

Tom has some good advice. Definitely best to monitor your nitrates and phosphates, especially when switching foods or swapping out filtration equipment. Over time, you'll find that right balance of amount of food and amount of filtration :)

Two Things: 1: I made this full recipe and it lasted over 2 years to the point I had to stop feeding because it cld be bad after a certain point. everything benefitted and allowed my phosphates to actually be read above 0 and be stable at .05. SO..AFTER NOT FEEDING THIS DAILY ANYMORE & ONLY PELLETS FOR TWO MONTHS.. BUT EXPORT STAYED SAME.. SO NO2PO2 WENT TO 0 AND CAUSED CYANO, BRIOPSIS & GHA OUTBREAK.. AND BOTH TANGS GOT DEVELOPED HEAD & LINE EROSION .. 6 YEAR OLD HIPPO TANG JUST DIED YESTERDAY. : / She WAS THE LAST OF OUR FIRST 3 SALTWATERR FISH THAT SANTA DROPPED IN THE OUR CYCLED TANK ON CHRISTMAS 6 YEARS AGO. So the corals the fish and the water benefited from proper nurition. I just wish there were bigger thick chunks of seaweed Available to use. (Seaweed Extreme EXTREME XXL!)
@ethanrussell3163
@ethanrussell3163 Жыл бұрын
Yeah what you find with reef tanks is that as you develop your system biologically the capacity to deal with nutrient input increases - drop the gas then you starve things out. Sorry to hear, those pests are nasty particularly cyano.

I noticed you didn't add any garlic oil to the food. How many times have you seen people recommending people to add garlic oil to there fish food?
@BRStv
@BRStv 4 жыл бұрын
Garlic has really fallen out of favor with the reefing community. While it can usually help with a feeding response, the whole garlic cures diseases idea is pretty much gone. There is some thought that long term garlic use might even hurt the internal organs of fish, so we typically see it left out of quality fish food these days.
