Water is where it all begins and today Ryan shares his thoughts for why water filtration could be one of the keys to creating an awesome reef tank as well as ways to get it done. We also touch on salt mixes, which may surprise you on what we actually recommend you use!

ive been using municipal water for the first 3 years but I had to change to RO system after my city water increased in nitrates...I tested it and it was at 40ppm. crazy i know!!! so I purchased my water from my LFS well after breaking my ankle that was hard to do water changes and so I got the RO system recently. I had no idea it would take so long to make water and I also had no idea I would be wasting water as well.Thanks for the info.

The best salt I ever used was ESV. Took a couple water changes to learn the steps and how much of each component to use but it was by far the cleanest option I've ever run. Not to mention Bob Stark gave personal customer service when I had issues. The issues ended up being my test kit and not ESV's problems. He still took time and helped me through it all.

How long have you been using ESV? I have thought about switching to it and I am on the fence between ESV and Tropic Marin. Quite surprised ESV does not get more attention/credit.

@@clsanchez77 Never got a notification about this comment... I haven't used it for a few years because of cost. It's about .60 cents a gallon now. I have thought about it quite often though and may go back. I used it for a couple years when I did use it and loved it. Once I figured out all the measurements, it was super easy

Can I get some more details on the sediment filter you run on your mixing container? What kind of pump do you use? Do you just drop it into the bottom of the container or is it plumbed somehow? Is it always on or do you have it scheduled? Which filter are you using? How long are your filters lasting? I'm sick of cleaning out the bottom of my container and would love to go this route.

Question, on that tropic marine salt that you will be using. It says on your website not to use it in a auto water change system, due to the build up of the sediment. And then cleaning of the barrel. Thoughts or should I mix and use a sediment filter after mixing?
@BRStv
@BRStv 4 жыл бұрын
You can absolutely use the Tropic Marin Pro Reef or Classic salts on an auto water change station. The Tropic Marin Bio-Actif salt on the other hand, is better to mix up and use the whole thing at once as it contains beneficial bacteria that won't store well.

I wish there were more options for smaller sized salt mixes. Two Little Fishies has 5 gallon bags, but is not widely available. 50 gallons seems to be the smallest for most brands. As a nano reefer I would like to mix the entire bag to avoid stratification, and avoid having a partially used bag caking up in my storage. But 50+ gal is many months worth of water changes.

What about RODI ATO water sitting in brute for extended time? Any benefit from running it through a carbon block or sediment filter before heading from the ATO Brute into the tank? 40 gallons of ATO is sometimes sitting in the Brute for 3 weeks before being used.

I burn through mixed bed DI in about a month. The pro 3-stage DI is definitely worth it. I definitely wish the higher end salts were cheaper though. It's such a big jump from IO to anything significantly better. I change about 60gal a month, so the cost isn't inconsiderable.

I think the first real question would be, is [brand x] actually significantly better than the Instant Ocean you've been using?
@jasepoag8930

Aaron Weigand they certainly have their issues with batch consistency. That's my main complaint. I tried the cheaper aqua forest stuff for a bit, but same thing. Oh well, the corals are happy and growing.

My question is in what time period should you use all the mixed saltwater by?
@louekus
@louekus 5 жыл бұрын
If you are using Tropic Marin, and circulating but not aerating, you can mix and hold the Classic and the Pro-Reef types indefinitely. The Bio-Actif System and the Syn-Biotic types really need to be used within about 24-36 hours. This is because the organic polymers, in the salt mix, will start to "chain up" and form some slimy blobs or coating. It is not detrimental, just doesn't look very nice.
